Miller Trade to Seattle to Bring Us Earl Watson

Post#1 » by Rod700 » Thu Feb 7, 2008 9:42 pm

With all the buzz around what Miller could do for the Hawks, there has concern over his contract and his inability to hit the three. I tried to think of a way to bring in a third team that would be interested in Miller, so that the Sixers could still benefit from our expiring contracts, and the Hawks could get a starting point with some range so AJ doesn't have to play so many minutes.

Trade ID #4481095

Atlanta gets:

Earl Watson
Robert Swift (Expiring Contract)
Muhomad Sene (About 4.3 mil over two years)

Atlanta Trades:

Lorenzen Wright (expiring)
Josh Childress (expiring)
Tyronee Lue (expiring)

Philly gets:
Lorenzen Wright (expiring)
Josh Childress (expiring)
Tyronee Lue (expiring)
1st Round Pick from Seattle (Lottery protected 2008, Top 10 protected 2009, Top 3 protected 2010).

Philly trades:
Andre Miller

Seattle Gets:
Andre Miller

Seattle Trades:
Earl Watson
Robert Swift (Expiring)
Sene

Atlanta gets something for it's expiring contracts and shifts talent from SF (Chill) to PG (Watson). Watson fits the bill for an unselfish player who looks to others to score rather than racking up many points himself. He does so despite a superb ability to hit the three, and boasts assists per game similar to Andre's.

Philadelphia gets the chance to fully embrace rebuilding mode. They get out from under Andre's contract acquiring only expiring contracts, while also obtaining a pick that will prove very useful in the future.

Seattle has entered the part of the rebuilding process where they actually begin building the team back up again. Miller is an upgrade to Watson in that they manage the same number of assists per game, but Andre can scores 16 of his own points a game when his teammates can't. He's a veteran that can lead a young team and teach them how to play as a unit.

My only concern about this trade is that Miller is much older than I thought he was when I put this thing together. I'm worried Seattle won't want to invest in a guy that only has a few years left in him.

Forgot to mention Philly gets a chance to resign solid players (Chill and Lue) if they choose to.

Seattle doesn't want Miller, he's too old and quite frankly, too good. They want to be as bad as possible... they are actually doing a good job at that. They want that pick and they prolly want to hold onto any expirings they have, I'm sure they'd almost rather have expirings than Watson. They want to keep costs down while they know they'll be bad and have uncertainty around where they play.

There is no reason for Seattle to go after Miller. if they want a pg to build the team around, they can do so via the draft. Seattle is also not going to give up two young bigs, one who seattle is very high on.

I don't think earl Watson is enough of a upgrade at point to justify the down grade at the backup SF position that we would have in losing Chillz.

Seattle wouldn't do that.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I only included Robert Swift as a filler, hoping they weren't so high on him anymore since they don't play him much.

Do you agree with conleyorbust's quote below and the notion that they are still stripping down the team's budget due to being focused on relocation. Would they possibly let him go for expiring contracts and picks? Would it be feasible to offer them Lue, Lorezen, and maybe a couple of 2nd round picks, for Watson?

It's not about stripping the team's budget because of their current situation(being in court with the city and losing some money, due to putting a crappy product on the floor and that Key Arena lease), as it's more that having two mediocre pg's making MLE money, or even slightly more, is not all that good for any team, especially when you're rebuilding and hoping for a player at that position(Rose, Bayless or even Mayo) in the upcoming draft.

And yes, Watson should be available for expiring contracts(Lue and Salim would be enough), while you're even able to keep that 2nd round pick.

BTW: The Sonics are still hoping that Robert Swift turns out to be a decent player and today there's even an article in one of Seattle's newspapers stating that the Sonics want to evaluate(that's the word you can describe our whole season with) Swift during those final 2 months of the season.

Seattle have would have no reason to look to upgrade the pg position via a trade. The next draft class is solid in PG, and they hope to grab either Rose or Mayo.

And if we're looking at improving our pg, we should look further than Watson. While he would be a quick fix, we don't want him in the mid-long run. We already got a quick fix at the 2007 deadline, and he's called AJ.

It's no longer time for quick fixes. Let's get a solid pg and in a package including Chill before we lose him for nothing.
