Diop plays his best when he knows he will get at least 15 minutes a night. Even better when he gets 30 minutes.
Diop is not well suited as a "be ready to play a minute at any moment" type of bench guy. He normally has a 5 minutes warmup time.
I have and still am a proponent of making the C spot all Damp and Diop with the Dirk/Bass frontcourt ONLY in certain situations against certain teams. I am likeing Bass more at SF/PF than PF/C.
Avery has been going through his roations of conciously trying to get Hassell, George, & Bass more minutes and has forgotten of Diop. Quites honestly, I am liking our team better with George and Hassell taking most Stack's 20 MPG with Bass taking a few at SF.

I used to be on the play a center at all times bandwagon, but I'm starting to change my mind. The only thing that Bass doesn't do that Dampier and Diop do is protect the paint quite as well.
What he can do though is keep the defense honest to open up lanes for us on offense, or hit a jumper. He can switch on the pick and roll and guard a perimeter player very well. He can box out and get up and pull down tough rebounds. Even when he's guarding a big 1-on-1 he usually holds his own.
A lot of it depends on the matchup but I think that for the most part the good outweighs the bad when Bass is on the court with Dirk. We still need Dampier and Diop to do what they do. Bass really adds another threat and dimension that we've been needing though.. I say use it.
