If we had signed him this off-season, it would be for less than the MLE. But assuming we did sign him for 8 mil or so, about 5 mil of that would have already been paid by us and the last 3 we could send over in the trade as cash.
That would be different in terms of the other team willing to talk to us more, but we still would be paying the tax on him or whoever we trade for. I just don't think KVH will ever be used as an artificial contract due to the tax reasons because Miller is not worth 18 mil.

I guess an argument could be made that neither are Stack, Terry, and Damp. But I see your point in the importance of trading a real contract for a player.
I was looking at it more as a virtual FA situation where we weren't limited to the MLE amount.
