In the west, if you can't compete for a title, you might as well fold and try again next year. This is why the team with the best record just made a huge move. The Suns look as good as they ever have, but they weren't afraid to go for the extra edge by shaking things up and giving away their best defender. people say that teh Suns need defense as well, so why wouldn't Utah be similarly inclined to make a move if we offered something they like? As for the people who claim Otis loves Hedo too much, face it, GM's have to protect their jobs. If he thinks that trading a hot commodity for a better chance at the finals is possible, he does it every time. Just last week Riley was campaigning for Shaq to be an All Star. You have to buy low and sell high to be a good GM in this league.

Here's a difference between the Lakers or Suns and the Magic and why they legitimately pulled the triggers on these deals.

For the Lakers, why wouldn't you make the deal? They committed grand larceny, and all of the NBA analysts in the country and former NBA players who comment on the game say Jerry West had something to do with it -- even if the Grizzlies deny it. Besides that, though....the Lakers already have two All-Stars (well, one and one guy who has been an All-Star in Odom) on their roster, and a guy who has won three titles. Kobe is arguably the very best player in the league and will turn 30 this year. Derek Fisher, who is now their starting point guard and who was brought back to help pull the team back together, will turn 34. Time isn't running out yet, but they are closer to the end than the beginning.

The Suns see the time running out on the careers of Steve Nash and Grant Hill, and they have been deep in the playoffs for the past few years but can't get over the hump. They needed something new to change the look of what they are throwing at their West opponents. They were 14-12 against West teams.

Can you look at one or two Magic players and say that they are as ready as those guys? As of now, the coach has to remind them to play defense. They have yet to make it out of the first round, and their young star is very young without a guy who has been there before -- like Wade had with Shaq and Kobe had with Shaq and Tim Duncan had with David Robinson and even the Pistons got when they added Rasheed Wallace.

I expect the Magic will try to keep improving their roster until they have enough to get to that point. And then, if they need that extra push, they will make that move then. Just like they did when they added Horace to play with Shaq, Nick, Penny and D3 as well as some good solid backups like Brian Shaw, etc. It happened quicker before because their core was built with very top draft picks (Shaq, No. 1; Penny, might as well have been No. 1, Dennis No. 3. Nick was the latest pick at No. 11.) The trick will be keeping the quality depth they have had the past couple years until they get to that point.
