Stastical review of Toronto's bench

Post#1 » by supersub15 » Sun Feb 10, 2008 2:44 pm

As of today, Toronto's bench is:

- 5th in minutes played (89 total minutes played per game)
- 5th in points scored (33.8 points per game)
- 5th in assists (7.7 assists per game)
- 7th in rebounds (14.4 rebounds per game)
- 11th in steals (2.6 steals per game)
- 16th in turnovers (4.3 turnovers per game)
- 12th in FG% (.440 shooting)
- 1st in 3FG% (.413 shooting)
- 26th in FTA (8.1 FTA per game)
- 30th in blocks (0.9 block per game)

Overall, we have the 6th best bench, as indicated by the overall efficiency differential.

As you can see, the strenghts and weaknesses are there for all to see. We have no inside presence, as demonstrated by our weak numbers in blocks and FTA, but we compensate it by strong 3FG%, points and assists, i.e. we move the ball well and shoot the open three. With TJ back and gaining strength, I expect the numbers to go up even further.

9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Good question:

Last year:
- 3rd in minutes played (88.6 total minutes played per game)
- 1st in points scored (35.6 points per game)
- 3rd in assists (7.0 assists per game)
- 17th in rebounds (13.3 rebounds per game)
- 5th in steals (2.7 steals per game)
- 21th in turnovers (4.8 turnovers per game)
- 5th in FG% (.450 shooting)
- 16th in 3FG% (.348 shooting)
- 13th in FTA (8.0 FTA per game)
- 21th in blocks (1.3 block per game)

Overall, we have the 8th best bench, as indicated by the overall efficiency differential. However, our differential this year is +6, whereas it was only +2.8 last year.

Damn..you can uncover some interesting stuff when you crunch some numbers. I would think that our bench would have a higher differential than last year.

By the end of the year, I can see Ford, Kapono and Delfino giving us the best bench in the league.

No team has that much pure ability from their 6,7 and 8th man.

cool to note, but i think that we can pro-rate these numbers to account for TJ being injured, resulting in Dixon at point, rendering the bench less productive.

last year we had Bargs on the bench, plus the injury to Ford of last year was not nearly as long and this year isn't even done, so it is an even GREATER percentage to account for.

Our bench was probably ranked much higher when Jose was running the show and I expect it to approach #1 again with TJ running the second unit. It lost a lot of its efficiency with Dmart or Juan running it.

TJ is looking good running it though, damn good. I hope he plays with the bench the rest of the way. The bench could really benefit with a creative player like TJ running it to be used to its full potential. He makes passes that Calderon just can't.
