NBA commissioner David Stern has named Rasheed Wallace to the Eastern Conference All-Star team as a replacement for injured starter Kevin Garnett.

It is Wallace's second All-Star selection as a Piston, and his fourth overall.

Wallace is averaging 12.9 points and 7.3 rebounds this season. Garnett has been out with a strained abdomen. The All-Star Game is next Sunday in New Orleans.

Boston Celtics forward Kevin Garnett withdrew from the NBA All-Star game Sunday and was replaced on the Eastern Conference roster by Detroit Pistons forward Rasheed Wallace. The announcement was made by the commissioner's office after Garnett missed his seventh consecutive game with an abdominal strain. Celtics coach Doc Rivers, who will coach the East in the Feb. 17 game in New Orleans, said Garnett will not play until the team returns from the break. "He's out until after the All-Star break," Rivers said after the Celtics beat the San Antonio Spurs 98-90 to improve to 5-2 since Garnett was injured.

Garnett was averaging 19.2 points and 9.9 rebounds per game before being sidelined two weeks ago after straining a stomach muscle on Jan. 25 against the Timberwolves. He was the leading vote-getter for the All-Star game, but Rivers said that Garnett would probably not play Tuesday or Wednesday, in Boston's last two games before the break. Rivers, who will coach the East in the game, said he hoped Ray Allen would be considered as Garnett's replacement. "He should be (an All-Star) anyway. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't Ray they use," Rivers said. "It would be nice to have Ray on. I would take Ray."

Wallace will join teammates Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton for the All-Star game New Orleans. It will be his fourth All-Star appearance. Wallace is averaging 12.9 points and 7.3 rebounds this season, and leads Detroit in blocks and steals.

If Rivers wants Ray, I say give the man what he wants.

Though, it would be somewhat humorous if the refs give Rasheed a tech for the hell of it.

Nazr Mohammed just laughed. He was told that former teammate Rasheed Wallace had been picked to replace injured Kevin Garnett on the Eastern Conference All-Star team. "Man, I know he's not happy," Mohammed said, laughing. Wallace clearly wasn't overjoyed by the news, but he did appreciate the honor. "It's something that's good for my kids," he said, in almost somber tones. "I guess once I get older and get out of the game, this is something they can look back on."

Wallace had campaigned hard to not be selected, preferring the four days off instead. He already had made plans to spend the four-day break some place a lot more tropical than New Orleans. "We'll have to put those plans aside and move them to the summer," he said after Sunday's 113-87 victory over the Bobcats. When told he was hand-picked by commissioner David Stern to replace Garnett, Wallace gave a wry smile and said, "It's a prestigious honor and a great pleasure." It's the fourth all-star selection for Wallace, his second as a Piston. He will join teammates Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton, who also are reserves. "Once he gets there he will enjoy it," coach Flip Saunders said. "Whenever you get selected to do something like that, you should feel good about it. It's an honor for him, but more than that, it is an honor for his family and for our organization."

Garnett has been shelved by an abdominal strain. Wallace, Saunders guessed, probably was next in line on the coaches' vote at the center position, which led to Stern's selection. "I think it's great," Billups said. "We have three guys in the game and no other team can say that. That's a tribute to how good we are playing. 'Sheed is listed as a center now, and besides Dwight Howard (the East's starting center), you can't tell me there's another guy better than 'Sheed. He should have made it before being named a replacement."Either Wallace or Toronto's Chris Bosh will get the start. That decision will be made by Boston coach Doc Rivers. "The best thing about 'Sheed going is now he can help Rip win that 3-point shooting contest," Saunders said, referencing how Wallace has been egging Hamilton on in recent practices. Wallace agreed. "For sure I will be there to cheer Rip on," he said. "That's my teammate and he's been practicing hard to try and win that thing. I will be there for him." The All-star Game is at 8 p.m. Sunday on TNT.

Poor Rasheed Wallace. He's going to be an NBA All-Star after all.On Sunday, NBA commissioner David Stern picked Wallace to replace Celtics forward Kevin Garnett, who will miss the game because of an abdominal injury. Wallace, who will make his fourth All-Star appearance, was adamant during the voting process that he would rather spend the four-day break vacationing with his family. Instead, he'll travel to New Orleans with teammates Chauncey Billups and Richard Hamilton for next Sunday's game. "This time I'll go for the kids," Wallace said. "I guess once I get older or out of the game, they can look back on it and check it out."

Sarcastically, he added, "It's a huge honor; it's a great pleasure. That's about it." His teammates and coaches really do feel that way. "I think it's a great honor for him and the team," coach Flip Saunders said. "When he gets down there, he'll enjoy it, especially now with his kids getting a little bit older and really understanding what it's all about. You do those things sometimes for your organization and your family as much as yourself." Wallace said he'd have to cancel his family's already-booked vacation to "somewhere nice." Stern had little choice when picking Garnett's replacement. Although he could have considered someone like Celtics guard Ray Allen, who has been one-third of that team's remarkable turnaround, or Orlando small forward Hedo Turkoglu, he would have been silly to pick anyone shorter than 6-foot-11. Coaches already had elected not to pick a backup center for the bench, going with forwards Chris Bosh and Antawn Jamison as the only post players in the final seven picks. Wallace finished third in fan voting at center behind starter Dwight Howard and Shaquille O'Neal. With O'Neal now in the Western Conference after last week's trade to Phoenix, Wallace was the next logical choice.

"I think it's a tribute to how good we've been playing," Billups said. "And he's listed as a center now, so other than Dwight Howard, who's already on the team, you can't tell me another guy up there that's better than 'Sheed." Wallace last went to the All-Star Game in 2006, when the Pistons sent four of their starting five. He grumbled then, too, but some in the organization said deep down they think he wanted the spot. Saunders isn't so sure this time. "The only part of him that might be happy is he'll be able to go down there and help Rip win that three-point contest," Saunders said, then imitating the strange way Wallace yells "5-4-3-2-1" each time Hamilton practices for the contest. "I don't know. 'Sheed's tough to figure out. I think anytime you're selected to do something like that, you should feel good about yourself. It is an honor to go as an All-Star."

The addition of Wallace means the Pistons will have three or more all-stars for the second time in the last three seasons. "It's exciting to have Rasheed in there with us," said Detroit's Richard Hamilton, who along with Chauncey Billups and Wallace, will play for the East. "It's going to be exciting." The addition of Wallace means Boston, which has an NBA-best 39-9 record, will only have one player (Paul Pierce) playing in Sunday's game."There's a lot of guys that are good players that don't go to the All-Star Game because of their position," Detroit coach Flip Saunders said. "(Boston guard) Ray Allen is probably a guy that's deserving but from a position standpoint, as far as Garnett going out ... they're (Eastern Conference All-Star team) small as it is, because they really didn't go with a backup center with Chris Bosh. He's a forward."

The only players on the Eastern Conference squad 6-foot-10 or taller are Orlando's Dwight Howard, who will start at center; and Bosh, who is more of a power forward than center. The Western Conference All-Stars boasts a starting lineup that includes 6-11 forward/center Tim Duncan of San Antonio and 7-6 center Yao Ming of Houston, while 6-11 forward/center Amare Stoudemire of Phoenix and 7-0 forward Dirk Nowitzki of Dallas, the league's MVP last season, come off the bench."With losing Kevin at the forward spot, it makes sense to replace him with a forward," Celtics coach Doc Rivers told the Boston Globe. "(Wallace) is well deserving and one of the guys I voted for in the first place."

Boston coach Doc Rivers , who will coach the Eastern Conference All-Star team, lobbied hard to get his guy Ray Allen onto the team, but that doesn't mean he was against the selection of Wallace. "I am really happy for Rasheed," Rivers told the Boston Herald. "I understand them selecting him. They lost Kevin (Garnett ) at the 4-5 spot (power forward-center) and they needed a 4-5 to replace him. Rasheed is the right selection for that. To be honest, he's one of the guys I voted for in the first place."

Rivers is holding out slight hope that Allen could still make it. Washington's Caron Butler has been out because of a hip injury and might not be fit for the All-Star game. "I am still not happy Ray isn't on the team," Rivers said. "I just think he should have been taken in the voting (by the coaches). He's the guy on our team who's had to sacrifice the most and I don't know why that sacrifice wasn't recognized."

Rivers hasn't decided who would start (Wallace or Chris Bosh ) in place of Garnett.
