Would you trade Sean May for Patrick O'Bryant (Warriors)?
I'm a Warriors fan and am curious about whether Bobcat fans would consider this a fair trade. We can use someone with some bulk to play PF. I realize May is out for the season, and it's unclear how well he will recover from his injury, but since his contract is relatively low, it's not a huge risk for us.
O'Bryan doesn't play much for us, but many Warriors fans (including myself) think he has a lot of potential, and are unhappy he hasn't played more and that the Warriors didn't exercise their option on him. In the limited playing time he's had, he's shown that he can be a pretty good shot blocker, has a nice mid-range shot, and is an above-average passer for his position. He's an unrestriced FA after this season, so if you guys don't like him, it doesn't cost you anything after this year.
I'm assuming Charlotte would not be willing to trade Okafor unless they got a very good player in return.

Hard to say as POB can walk after this season. Do we want out of May's contract (which is what this is basically doing) or do we take yet another gamble on that knee of his? When healthy May is a much better player...but he's never healthy.
Yeah, I'd do it too.

Isn't he a center? Can he play PF? Because if not,
(1) Why do we need another center when we already have problems playing the two we have since they don't work alongside each other?
(2) As someone said, he can walk after this season.
People don't make sense. Might as well stick with fat ass. You could add O'Bryant in the offseason if you want another center that we won't be able to find minutes for because we can't play our centers alongside each other due to one of them being forced to play away from the basket and guarding quick PFs.
We've stuck with fat ass this long, you might as well keep sticking with him. It's not like we gain much money to do thing anything if we get rid of his contract. We're apparently going nowhere the rest of this season, so if we just rent him out for the rest of the year, that's pointless.
Might as well keep the disappointing fat ass here.

I don't see the potential in O'Bryant. Maybe May will never walk again, maybe he'll never play another game, but maybe he comes back with a knee that works and contributes some great bench post scoring. What is O'Bryant's top end result? Role player?
Bah I guess I would have to do it, POB could still get better...

Eh, I guess I'd bring him in to replace Hollins as he seems to not be getting any better and you'd think a lotto pick would have more potential than he has. It is possible that if we brought POB in now and gave him some PT we might have the edge in re-signing him as he'd have gotten to know the squad. JSwish would probably help too...that is if POB has gotten over the popcorn incident.
As it sits now we don't have many assets outside of our pick to get better over the offseason. Sure we have a couple of tradable assets...but if we're trading them because of their performance it's not like other teams won't realize that and lowball us. May/Ammo is pretty much worthless trade wise unless we're willing to take on a bad contract.
Not a big deal either way though.

The question should be, why would the run and gun Golden State Warriors want Sean May? He just had microfracture surgery and was slow as sh*t BEFORE. And it's probably going to take him 2 years just to be able to get back to playing shape. Actually why would any team want Sean May? I would think the Warriors could get something a little bit better now.
Of course I would take a flyer on POB because May is useless and will be useless for the next 2 years. Then he will be a free agent.

Thanks for the feedback. From the perspective of a Warriors' fan, I would prefer that O'Bryant get some real playing time and that we bring him back next year, as I do think he has potential. But Nelson just won't play him, and it looks like the Warriors have no intention or bringing him back. (Nelson isn't playing our other young big men either, like Brandan Wright, and Kosta Perovic, as he is focused on trying to get to the playoffs this year, and not on developing our young big men). I hope that decision doesn't come back to haunt us.
As far as May goes, our main weakness is that physical power forwards and centers can overpower us, and we're a poor rebounding team. May seems like a pretty physical guy who's a good rebounder, so I thought he might be helpful. I'm thinking of him more as a backup/change of pace kind of guy, maybe like Milsap is for the Jazz. If he doesn't recover from his mircosurgery, it's not a huge loss for us since his contract isn't that horrible. I realize he doesn't fit our uptempo style, but we just signed Webber, and it's hard to imagine May would be slower than him (although Webber does have some other skills that may help us, at least on offense). Obviously, we'd prefer to get a starter quality PF, but they're pretty hard to find.

Well first of all, nobody is going to make a deal for May knowing his career is in question.
Second of all, like Ammo, his value is at the lowest it could possibly be unless he was in this position on a long term huge contract. It's worth it for us to just keep him and see if things can play out in our favor. Worst case scenario he doesn't work out and we release him. But there's still a chance he could come back and be healthy enough to give us some sort of career. I know everyone gets on him for his weight, but when he's healthy he plays well for us, always has.

I doubt that Maphew's proposed trade would find any takers on the Golden State board.
Granted that he is right that O'Bryant isn't getting any run now, why would we want to replace him with someone coming off of knee surgery who looks like a less athletic version of Zach Randolph: kind of overweight, not real quick, and overweight plus knee surgery = bad risk.
So thank you for playing our game, and allow me on the behalf of Warriors fans everywhere to rescind this trade request.

May is sort of the worst contract we have - getting rid of him would be blessing (but in reality, nobody would take him).BigSlam wrote:I'd rather just wait until the summer and sign POB outright, hope that McMay finds his way out on to the court next season and proves to have some worth and then trade him for something of at least equal value.

No, POB will never play at a high level in this league. He is a perfect example of the hype machine boosting someone's draft stock.
