Sprewell’s yacht sold, home could be foreclosed

Ex-NBA star owes $295,138 on his Milwaukee-area house

updated 5:11 p.m. CT, Mon., Feb. 11, 2008

MILWAUKEE - Former NBA star Latrell Sprewell’s home is up for foreclosure and his yacht sold at auction to help pay off the $1.3 million he owes on the boat, according to court filings.

Sprewell, who once turned down a three-year, $21 million contract extension saying, “I’ve got my family to feed,” has apparently fallen on tough times.

RBS Citizens NA, or Citizens Bank, filed a foreclosure suit last week in Milwaukee County for the $405,000 home Sprewell bought in the Milwaukee suburb of River Hills in 1994.

In court documents, the bank said Sprewell owed $295,138 in outstanding payments plus interest.

Sprewell failed to make his mortgage payments of $2,593 per month from September 2007 to January 2008, the documents said.

The Associated Press tried to reach Sprewell for comment Monday but a telephone number in his name was disconnected. A message to one of his attorneys, Robert A. Gist of Atlanta, and an agency in New York were not immediately returned.

The 37-year-old Sprewell played 13 seasons in the NBA for the Minnesota Timberwolves, the New York Knicks and the Golden State Warriors. The Milwaukee native was a four-time All-Star, but perhaps best known for choking coach P.J. Carlesimo during a Warriors practice in 1997.

He hasn’t played professional basketball since turning down the $21 million extension from the Timberwolves during the 2004-05 season. He was making $14.6 million at the time.

Last month, Sprewell’s 70-foot yacht, named “Milwaukee’s Best,” was sold at auction for $856,000 to a man from Milwaukee.

It was originally worth about $1.5 million. The bank holding that mortgage, New York-based North Fork Bank, asked that it be seized to pay off $1.3 million in debt.

Sprewell’s firm, LSF Marine Holdings, hadn’t made its $10,322 monthly payments on time or maintained the necessary insurance on the boat, the bank said. Sprewell bought the yacht built by the Italian firm Azimut-Benetti in 2003, according to court records.

A federal marshal seized the boat last summer in Manitowoc, about 80 miles north of Milwaukee, where it was in storage.

The sale price means the bank is still owed about $500,000, and it said in court filings it plans to go after the rest.

Last week, prosecutors in New York said they’d drop their case against Sprewell, who was accused of assaulting his girlfriend in front of their children. Prosecutors in Westchester County said the charges will be dismissed in a year if Sprewell stays out of trouble.

At first I laughed at the guy because of his antics, then him saying "I've got my family to feed", but now I kind of feel bad for the guy. I remember when I was a little kid when my dad was between jobs and was facing a foreclosure on our house, and things were tough. Things turned around for my dad, and we stayed put, but I know what it's like.

Dam, I guess my dreams of making it rain with Spree on "Milwaukee's best" some balmy summer night will never come true.

Last time I checked $21,000,000 >> $0 >> -$500,000. But I guess that's what happens when you let pride get in the way of better judgment...

But the 21 mil aside, there is absolutely no reason he, and his children, and his children's children shouldn't be set up for life...

I have to believe Spree is doing a lot better financially than that article is making him out to be. First, he has a personal lawyer answering his questions who must be on a retainer fee. Secondly, the house that is about to be reposessed is only valued at $400,000. Even I can afford to buy a $400,000 house. I have to believe he has other houses to live in valued at a lot more than that. that's the kind of house NBA players buy their mom when they are first drafted. Spree was a fool to turn down that 3 year extension offer. if he really needed the money, we would have attempted a comeback like penny hardaway did.

I've known many rich people who have allowed the banks to foreclose on their properties. they have no more use of them and refuse to continue paying for them. rich people don't really care much about their credit rating or having foreclosures counting against them.

while it may seem like the mighty have fallen, I have to believe Spree is still doing quite nicely. I didn't see him applying for a job at Dot foods lately.

Yeah Spree was making a ton of money and knowing his general malaise for other people I bet he just didn't care for paying for this stuff. Hard to believe he could have blown threw the 14.6 mill he made in his last year alone. Never know though.

As much as Spree deserves to get ripped on for his past actions and comments I have to agree that he is probably doing better than the article reports. Notice that the boat was owned by a corporate entity and not by him personally. If I had to guess he probably has many of his real assets titled in a similar manner, so as to avoid some personnal liability in cases like this. My point being that because he decided to not fund the marine holdings doesn't necessarily mean he is going broke. If his past actions show you anything it is that he is unpredictable and doesn't really do things that make sense. Any agent worth his 4% payout will get these guys set up with bright attorneys and money managers so that they are set for life beyond hoops.

Well, when you make a lot of money, you spend a lot of money. I'm not surprised. Did you guys see that thing in the paper about shaq's monthly expenses? It's outrageous. He's got like 150,000 a month owed just on mortgages.
