Shelden for Steve Francis + fillers

The first paragraph below was included in a previous Francis to ATL post I made earlier:

Atlanta fans may have their doubts about Steve Francis, but I see this as his perfect opportunity for redemption with little cost for Atlanta. When healthy, Francis consistently got 6+ assists per game each season, and proved to be a streaky three point shooter. Francis has had a humbling experience playing for the ill fated Knicks who could never play as a team, then having limited minutes in Houston, which was only followed by injury. Although he has been a scorer first in the past, I think he will be very open to a team willing to start him if he can prove himself as a pass first, offensive leader who creates for a younger, athletic teammates who merely need some veteran direction. For Francis to make this transition successfully though, he will need a coach that draws up decent plays, rotates his players effectively, and generally knows how to run the team. This means the end of the Woodson era.

He wasn't happy in Orlando, New York, and even his original team, Houston. I just don't see him as a team player to come here and teach these guys how to win.
To me, he is worth Lo Wright, who isn't getting off the bench.

One thing I forgot to mention is that we could do this deal in the offseason if Francis' player's option is exercised. We could make an offer on Calderon first (restricted free agent), but I don't think we will get him.

How can anyone play for New York and be happy? He's wasn't happy in Houston before his injury because they weren't playing him. I honestly don't remember how happy he was or wasn't in Orlando.

One thing I want to reiterate: Shelden is a player they could use, that we don't use. Francis could be a very cheap solution to our point guard problems for the next three or four years. If he isn't, who cares, I'd rather have the cap space of trading Shelden than have Shelden. It's win win!

Francis is far from being the "solution" to our pg problem. He is getting older, hasn't been healthy in years (if ever), and I doubt he could retain his top player. He has never had a good assist-to ratio. He did have 7 dimes in 04-05, but also averaged 4 tos per game.

Like was said before, unless the filler is Landry or Brooks, I don't do it.

if we do this trade it would just give BK an excuse to not look for a pg. He will just say that Steve Francis will be our future as soon as he is healthy. Just like he did with Speedy. I think we can get more out of Shelden that Francis. He was a top 5 pick in the draft.. for some reason. :banghead:

I have no idea what that reason was though.

I understand your concern and those are good stats you posted with the assist to turnover ratio. Requiring that Landry or Brooks be in the trade might be a reasonable percaution. If we do that though, they may want a little more out of us than Shelden though.

I know what you mean. I wouldn't want BK to get complacent either. Hopefully if he did do the trade, he would see it as I do, a one year trial period, which determines if we have a solution, or need to keep looking.

I hear you man, but I already took that into acccount. We could do this trade in the offseason, pending an extensive physical of Francis and his player option being exercised. I know that's one more concern, but with a cheap one-year contract, I still don't think it's too much of a risk.
