I know, that original post was the height of idiocy. Absolutely moronic.

It's also missing McHale...
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

That doesn't mean it makes any sense.

How does Heinson go up and not KC Jones?

How does Cowens go up at all? I think he deserces his number retired but he is not a greater Celtic than some of the guys you are leaving off.

The only generational players this team has had are Cousy, Russell, and Havlicek. I guess you could squeeze Bird up there but he was arguably the 3rd best player of his own era. I agree with the sentiment I don't like retired numbers and we are going to end up with guys wearing triple digits. What is the point of having a number retired for Red, the court is named after him? The Ring of Honor makes sense but I just don't think it is real easy to decide whose number is retired and whose isn't.

I don't give a **** how many numbers are up there. We've won 16 World Titles - that entitles us to retire as many numbers as we want. We're the best (PERIOD). All of these other podunk franchises can worry about "only" retiring the best of the rest.

In my mind it will be retired if he wins a ring with the celtics and/or he stays a Celtic for his whole career.

So, it's less about basketball and achievements, and more about people novices like you have heard of?

Without question the Boston Celtics, Green Bay Packers, Montreal Canadians and New York Yankees are the most historically significant franchises in their respective sports.

Green Bay 5 Retired Numbers
Montreal 14 Retired Numbers
New York 16 Retired Numbers
Boston 21 Retired Numbers

LOOKING BACK AT HISTORY THEY COULD / SHOULD TAKE SOME NUMBERS DOWN AND HONOR THOSE IN A

Yeah, because we all know the #1 thing free agents are looking for is not money, not a chance to win but a "normal" jersey number!

As if the Celtics haven't retired every jersey but Acie Earl's.

The Acie Earl Number Retirement Ceremony is actually scheduled for the Utah game on March 14th.

I think all of the players with retired #s were good enough and helped this team enough to have there # retired except maybe Reggie Lewis which I have no problem with him having his # retired.

I think a big part of the number retiring thing is the Celtics organization has always preached family, loyalty and togetherness. This is a way to show respect to those who have helped the cause and contributed to wins/championships/the community/and the team as a whole. That would appeal to me as a player, knowing that if you give your all and put hard work into your playing, you're going to be rewarded and you'll always be a Celtic.

Actually when Karl Malone was being persued by Ainge Malone asked Danny if 32 was available. Danny got the ok from McHale just incase. IF you think a players number means nothing to them or their marketing, then I think you may be a little naive.
