Although sources say that the teams are still sorting out final details, this deal was described as "imminent" by one source close to the process after negotiations moved to an advanced stage Tuesday night. The proposed swap -- salvaged from talks of a three-way trade with Portland that developed and fizzled quickly two weeks ago -- would require Dallas to send 24-year-old point guard Devin Harris, veteran swingman Jerry Stackhouse, the expiring contracts of center DeSegana Diop and swingman Devean George and another player such as guard Maurice Ager to New Jersey for Kidd and possibly veteran guard Darrell Armstrong. It's believed that Dallas would also send New Jersey cash and future draft considerations.

Seems like a lot to give up. But I guess it is for one or two final runs...

Wow....so Cuban might give up Devin Harris, Stackhouse, and Diop for Kidd?
I'm not sure I like that from Dallas standpoint.
Interesting that the Mark Stein article noted that neither side could find a "third team" to involve as Portland was in the earliers rumors....
Maybe Larry could make a call here....have Devin head this way. Mo/CV to New Jersey.

I'm a big Devin Harris fan but I think this is a great trade for the Mavs. The trade is basically Harris/Stackhouse for Kidd and that's a helluva deal. The Nets aren't even getting a future first of any kind so from their perspective it's basically Kidd for Harris. Again, I like Devin a lot but he isn't Jason Kidd now and I don't think he'll ever be as good as Jason Kidd has been and still is.
Nothing will not break me.

Unless the Mavs win a title, Cuban will regret giving up Devin Harris in 3 years. BUT, it's ALL about winning a title in this league so....

I see it more as Harris/Diop for Kidd.

I agree with both europa and ESBF. (Assuming this deal or one like it goes down) I think that the Mavs are justified in giving up what they did to get Kidd, as he's a big-time game changer. He is, easily, the best player in the deal right now.
But I agree with ES that if they don't win a title, they will definitely regret it. This trade is all about winning the title. They've gotten to the Championship before when Devin was very young - was it his rookie year? He's leaps and bounds better now, and will continue to improve, while Kidd will continue to decline.
Whether it's a good trade or not will almost completely be judged on whether it brings Dallas a title, IMO.

Either way, I still think this is a great trade for Dallas. Yea the Nets get a lot of cap room now but other than Stephon Marbury, how many big-time talents were longing to play in New Jersey before Kidd got there? They at least needed to get a future first in my opinion.

ESPN is now saying the deal could include keith Van horn. he never retired, and Dallas could sign him and then trade him to the nets.
here's a short exerpt:
The Nets could come away with even more salary-cap relief if the Mavericks built their trade package around Harris and a signed-and-traded Keith Van Horn. Although he has been out of the game since the end of the 2005-06 season, Van Horn hasn't filed official retirement papers with the league, allowing Dallas to retain his rights. And because Van Horn's final NBA salary was nearly $16 million, Dallas can re-sign him for a substantial amount and thus create a lucrative expiring contract for the Nets, because only the first year of a contract must be guaranteed in a sign-and-trade arrangement.
Cuban, though, told ESPN.com last week that "we won't use [Van Horn] in any deal for anyone." That's because Kidd would cost the Mavericks nearly $40 million next season, thanks to the luxury tax, if they sent only Harris, Van Horn and salary-cap filler to the Nets.
this makes me wonder - do the Bucks have anybody who never officially retired, that they could sign and then trade their expiring contract? Did micky davis ever officially announce his reirement? This makes me think the bucks oculd sign Spreewell or Big Dog to a deal and then trade him as an expiring contract. how about signing spreewell and then trading him for marbury ? it would at least provide the fans something for us to talk about.

If that happened, the winner of this deal would not be a specific team...it would be Keith Van Horn

Imagine the hilarity. KVH hasn't played for two years.
Yet his wife is in the kitchen cooking lunch and across the ticker goes "Keith Van Horn traded to New Jersey"
He doesn't even play basketball and the guy keeps getting traded.
I'm sure his agent has given him a heads up about a possible "bonus", but you catch my drift.
