Well, Dallas does have a few guys that can shoot. Kidd is one of the best rebounding PGs in the league and he's nearly averaging a triple double this season. Short term it helps them - long term I think it's awful for Dallas.

hollinger's take:

The Lakers must be falling over with laughter by now.

In the wake of their acquisition of Pau Gasol -- a trade that cost them nothing of value -- two of their biggest rivals for Western Conference supremacy responded by dealing key pieces of their core for Eastern Conference legends in their mid-30s. First, of course, came Phoenix's deal for Shaquille O'Neal last week, and now the Mavericks have jumped in with today's close-to-completion deal for Jason Kidd.

This isn't nearly as bad as the Shaq trade -- let me get that out of the way up front. But it has the same whiff of panic to it, coming as it did after the Mavs suffered consecutive whippings at the hands of second-tier Eastern teams, and following Mark Cuban's insistence that Dallas wouldn't unload half its team for Kidd.

If Stack is bought out he would look good in purple and gold coming off the bench.

We all knew this was coming. The balls out push to win now is awesome, so many stacked teams! This is going to be remembered as the heavyweight contenders era.

Devin Harris: talented starting point guard, one of their core.
Jerry Stackhouse: Sixth man, scorer, shooter, role player.
Desagana Diop: back-up center, defensive weapon.
Devean George
Draft picks

for

Jason Kidd 34-year old point guard who lost his shoot.
Malik Allen.

Great trade for the Nets, "decent" trade for the Mavs, fair trade, but it hasn

I'm a bit surprised at the belief by a number of the posters that this is a bad trade for the Mavs. They got Jason Kidd folks. In my view, that automatically makes them better, this year.
His 36% shooting percentage is meaningless. They didn't get him for his shooting. He has never been a lights out shooter.
They got him because he will run their offense efficiently, get everyone invloved, hustle, lead, rebound, and defend. These are all areas that he excells at.
They gave up Harris which will hurt them in the long run, but not this year or next.
I think a number of these players will be bought out by the Nets, including Stack, and he may resign with the Mavs.

I love as well other teams panicking :-), though personally I like more Shaq's than Kidd's trade (of course assessing both short-term). In short: Suns became more balanced/versatile=clearly better in offense, while not losing much in defense (even sheer size of Shaq is still huge indimidating factor under the basket plus Amare shall be better defending other natural PFs than Cs). While if Mavs gained in offense, their benefit is only marginal - on the other hand, without Devin and Diop they lost so MUCH defense that it's not even funny. OK, maybe it is. :D

Chris Paul
Steve Nash
Jason Kidd
Deron Williams
Tony Parker
Allen Iverson
Baron Davis

7 of the game's top PGs, all in the playoffs for the West. Absolutely unreal.

The East has uh...Calderon and Arenas left?

Didn't realize the Lakers have the weakest PG in the Western Conference playoffs this year...

I love how all the other teams in the west are panicing after the Pau trade and as a result they are making BAD deals!!!

First Shaq to the Suns!!!

Now Kidd to the Mavs!!!

The west is getting older and older.
