Impact Trades?

Post#1 » by mttingly2391 » Wed Feb 13, 2008 10:13 pm

Before I start this thing off, I just want to say that I realize not every team in the league is making impact trades. In fact, if you take the Lake Show, Dallas, and the Suns, almost no team is making high impact trades. However, why can't the Magic be part of that group. It seems that the best teams are always looking to get better by taking huge step and the Magic front office just wants to take baby steps. I also realize that giving Rashard the contract this past offseason was a huge impact move, but its so obvious that we are still a few players away. Teams like the Suns, Mavs, and Lakers see an opportunity this year and they went after it with their big trades.

Do you guys see anything like this on the horizon for the magic? The last mid season impact trade I can think of for the Magic was the Good and Giricek trade. I'm only talking about trades that moved us up in the playoff standings not ones that just netted us some decent players.

Any thoughts on this?

I actually was thinking about this a couple days ago also. Dwight is durable but you have to assume eventually he will get hurt maybe not for 8 9 years but it happens to all big men and from looking at Jermaine Oneal (the only other HS big man to come out even though he didnt play right away). The reason i was thinking about this is because we have to try to win as soon as Dwight is ready to be dominant which i do think is like a year maybe 2 away. So do we go for it now since we are 3 in the east? or do we wait and save cap space for the time when Dwight is shining? if we wait to long and he gets hurt Amarie style we could be skrewed.

I wouldnt be surprised if we make a move before the deadline. However like you say, we could be a year or 2 away. Maybe Otis wants to see how this group performs in the playoffs to see what needs to be tweaked in the offseason.. we have several expirings and there are good FAs available this summer.

What do you mean? If you mean enter the draft, you're not even close.

Kevin Garnett, Amare Stoudamire, Sagana Diop, Andrew Bynum, Kedrick Perkins, Robert Swift, Al Jefferson, Josh Smith, Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, Eddy Curry. Missed a few.

To answer your question, the Magic can not make a big splash move for 2 reasons...

1) We do not have the young movable talent to get a deal done. We do not have a Devin Harris or a Javaris Crittenton. We have Hedo, Shard and Dwight all are untradable, everything else is role players. Blame the terrible drafting over the last 5 years ago for this.

2) The teams making huge splah moves are in win now mode. LA, Dallas, and Phoenix are grasping at a last chance to win with a core that is in it's prime and will not be in it very much longer. So these teams are willing to give up young talent for a shot at a title. Orlando is built more to be a title contender in 2 years or so. Adding a splash guy like Kidd would make us better, but not a title contender most likely. So we would be cutting our building by moving young talent, without the upside of winning a title (potentially). That is the text book deffanition of making a trade just for the sake of looking busy.

Stay the course and show some patience, this team will reward it in a couple years.

Agree with the poor drafting comment. Also think it has a lot to do with a lack of ambition or just pure blindness. We coulda had Pau Gasol....I still say we could have offered a similar deal, even with bad drafts...

I don't think Crittenton or Harris are very exciting young players. Harris has a chance to be a pretty strong above average pg, and I think Jarvis could be too. But why can't we take a chance and trade someone like Nelson and some expiring so we can get a player. I don't want kid, but Artest, Gasol, those would be nice players to add (I know Gasol is gone, but I would have liked us to get him).

Not only did Memphis not talk to any team but LA about Gasol, but we do not have the young player like Crittenton to put in a Gasol trade, so what exactly is this Gasol deal we could have made, because people keep saying it but I don't see it.

Dude I'm not saying that we could have gotten Gasol, I'm just using that trade as an example. And I am sick of being patient with Otis. I honestly think he doesn't know what he is doing.

Plus Rashar and Hedo are not "really" close to 30. But they are about to enter those prime years in the NBA. I really think we need to go after the players that will put us near the top right away. If not now, then this summer for sure.

You need to understand that we do not have the pieces to make a big splash trade, so you are going to have to be patient. Otis has this team moving in the right direction. Period. I'm sure he is sad that you have too short an attention span to realize that, but Rome was not built over a lunch break.
