I got struck with a strange thought while watching TNT tonight hearing how they need a wing man. We've wanted a trade to make the playoffs, but if we lose our first 2 road games after the break (@Lakers and @Kings) we will be 21-30 on the day before the trade deadline. At that point are we really buyers or are we sellers?
Phoenix seems to lament being a man short on the wing. They have several trade exceptions that would accommodate the Childress's expiring contract. It would push them further over the luxury tax, but they seem to be going for broke. What would you be better for us long term, Josh Childress as RFA that we need to resign or our 2008 1st round pick + the cap room?
Then I thought if we had a 1st we could probably close a deal on some players being shopped. We theoretically could send it with 2 expiring deals (like Lue and Lo) to Memphis for Mike Miller and Kyle Lowry. Memphis is intent on getting a 3rd #1 this year. This 3 way deal could make that happen for us.
Currently our 1st would be 11th overall before any trade. Consider the options.

Never thought at this point we could benefit to get the pick back, but you found an good point. It could help for another trade.
Meanwhile, I am not able to submit a vote now. It would not have been the case before (at least not at this level), but I start to think we could made a mistake by trading Childress, and even more if he can stay for decent salary and sign early. I know we have several positions to fix, but even if some guys don't like his AST/TO ration, his lack of jump shots,... he brings something we will seriously miss, he's always in the good rhythm around the basket, the one cutting in the paint in the right moment... that's why I searched what was the biggest problem at this time and IMO, it's that no one of Marvin and Childress can't be an effective 3pts shooter. If one of these two players could, we would not have so few options.
Can we fix it while keeping both ? Not sure. Or by trading for a PG being a good shooter. If both Salim and Law could hit these shots, I would say keep Childress and Marvin. If Carroll could be the one providing it for sure, I would keep both. If we trade for a shooting SF like Mike Miller caliber, I am asking myself if it wouldn't be better to trade Marvin instead of Childress and try to get more.

This is a very difficult choice. I have always been a fan of Chill and would hate to lose him. The problem is, for as much energy and work he provides around the basket, he doesn't help us spread the floor (beyond the occasional 3pt from the corner). He's very valuable for what he does, but he's not a pure shooter which is a major need right now.
Chill would be a great fit for PHO IMO. He could play 2 or 3 and do a lot of dirty work that would make a big difference in the playoffs. He's probably exactly what they're looking for as well. The hard part is the best we could get for him are pick(s) and cap space. Both are nice, but I think we're beyond the point of making deals that say we're throwing in the towel on the season. Yes, this has been a disappointing season, but we could still make the playoffs if we can make the right move.
Our best bet is a 3-way deal with someone like PHI or MEM. PHO would send a 1st to whichever team and gets Chill from us. We get Andre or Mike Miller and send out expiring deals (Lo and Lue) in return. It works from the financial end of things for all parties. PHO doesn't lose any pieces and gain what could be a very valuable guy for now and the future. Whether it's PHI or MEM, they gain a great deal by getting an extra 1st and two expiring contracts. We benefit because we get a much needed player who will help us significantly without giving up too much. The deal might fit better for PHI because they get a PG in return for losing Miller, but they may not want to lose Miller. MEM likes the deal because they get the extra pick and contracts to help them rebuild, but they lose a valuable player that they won't be replacing and would have a hole in the lineup. The only snag for ATL is having the cap room to resign Smoove. This deal would leave us having to trade other players away to create room to resign him. The only way to avoid that is to send someone like Zaza instead of Lo because that would give us the extra space needed this offseason. Worth consideration though.
