To be honest. The nets and Thorn deserve this after trying to pull off that "bait and switch" last year by asking for bynum at the very end of the trade before the deadline with the lakers. In hindsight i'm glad that trade didn't go through because we landed Gasol with the same package we were going to give you guys. I hope Kidd rots in the nets and you guys and thorn have to deal with a disgruntled team waiting to be moved to brooklyn.

For one, while grabbing the expiring deals of Devean George and Diop helps, taking on Jerry Stackhouse for about $7.5 million in 2009 and $8.2 million in 2010 doesn't really help the bottom line for a club that is obviously rebuilding. And this team is really, really rebuilding: Dave D reports that Richard Jefferson might be the next to go.

Worse, if the team had bought Stack out as expected, they couldn't use his potentially expiring deal in 2009-10 to facilitate any other trades. He'd just be a contract, not contributing to the team (not that the Nets would want him), working against the team's salary cap, and outside of currying favor with Stack's agent (Jeff Schwartz, also Jason Kidd's agent), I don't really see the point.

I believe you're right. I hate that deal a little more now.

Rich what do you think of a deal like this -

Boone, Kidd, Allen

for

Eddie Jones (exp), Diop (exp), Harris, Hassel, KVH (fill-in), picks

Basically we are throwing them Boone to get Cuban to pay the extra $$ for the extra expirings as opposed to the original deal. Jones, Diop, and KVH would give us about 10 mil in expirings. We would have to keep Hassel but I don't think he is a totally useless piece. I like Boone but think with Swat, Swift, Diop, and Krisitic we dont need (especially if his play w/o Kidd is any indication of what he may be).

Netsman, There is not reason for us to get Hassel's contract. We dont want contracts. I think Jones has two years too. I am not giving Boone either. The only way I give boone if it is for a lottery pick from the worse teams in the NBA.

Hassels contract is the same length as Stackhouses (just 3 mil cheaper) and I am pretty sure Eddie Jones is an expiring.

Don't compare it to Gasol. Lakers flat out stole Gasol. Saying Thorn should of let his organization, fans and owners get ripped off by the Lakers is more a blemish on your own morality and sense of entitlement.

Last year no one knew for sure Bynum would break out. Thorn made a value evaluation, Kupchek made a value evaluation, and then decided it was better for both organizations to not deal. No one was ripping anyone off.

In this busted Mavs-Nets trade, both organization where offering value to get value, filling different needs of each team, in what would have been a win-win for both organizations.

ESPN Trade Machine

Hassel 4.35 mil/ 3 YR
Jones 1.83 mil/1YR (expiring)
Diop 2.146 mil/1 YR
***Harris 3.99 mil/6 YR*** PPP

Based on those numbers thats roughly 12 mil, however Harris PPP bumps his # up. So lets estimate his # gets bumped up 3 mil, that package there would assume 15 mil. Kidd's salary is listed at 19.7. Allen is the vet min. Boone is 1.1 mil.

That means there is a 6-7 mil difference that KVH and 15% rule would have to make up.

EdIT - Don't draft picks count in regard to the trade also. So the 2 first round picks would help cover the salary difference to make the trade legal.

Why give that up for 14 mins a night in NJ?

Wrong. There is no team that was going to pay George anywhere close to even the Mid-Level exception. And every team has the MLE to spend even if they are over the salary cap. The only way this Bird rights thing was valuable to George was if some team wanted to pay him more than the MLE which is around 5.5 million. No team is going to even come close to that for Devin freaking George. It's not like some team would pay George 8 mil and so he needed his Bird rights to allow the Mavs to sign and trade him. Any team could just sign him with some portion of the MLE or even the LLE even if they are over the cap already.

Not a big fan of trading Boone away. I think the only thing holding the original deal back now is Cuban going for a sign and trade with Van Horn and while also keeping Stackhouse's contract while also shelling out $3 million in the trade...I think. My head's been jumbled searching for different NBA Salary contract sites. Not surprisingly, many have different numbers.

Yeah I hear you. Honestly I think this deal will get done and it will be better for both teams the new way. Instead of George and Stackhouse (11 mil combined + the 3 mil cash) we will probably end up with Hassel, KVH, and another filler (Ager, Fazekas, or Jones). In the end I think the second deal helps both teams more because Dallas gets to keep some of their depth and we get more cap room.

This means pretty much is Cuban willing to spend the more money for the Luxury Tax , or not .

I think he knows backing down now will hurt his team and eventually give in , but it all comes down to him now.

Expiring contracts aren't essential to the Nets. You have to pay a certain percentage of the salary cap every year anyway and they aren't going to get anyone big in free agency this year. The Nets seem to be aiming for free agency right before their move to NY. Ratner is a business man, but he is a smart business man. He knows that if you put a good team in the middle of NY with a brand new arena the franchise's income is going to skyrocket.

Thats true, but NBA free agency is so muddled that you have to go for it when the players are available. I know there are the projections of the summer with Lebron, Wade, and whoever else being available in 09, but I think that is a risky strategy because 4 out of 5 years free agency just gets second (and third) level guys like Larry Hughes big pay days. If Kidd is gone I think Thorn is going to clear as much cap space as he can, as quickly as he can, because as you said it is essential that they have someone to market going into Brooklyn, whether or not they get him a year or 2 before the move is somewhat irrelevant.

Hassel's owed $13 million by the end of his contract. No way Ratner pays any amount near that.

Stackhouse is owed $22 million by the end of his contract. Even with the $3 mil in cash and the buyout, it's still probably more $$$ than Hassell.

I'm not saying take Hassell over George, but if anything Hassell over Stackhouse is a benefit for NJ.

Free agency is not a magic cure. It is a dangerous game to play. Top tier FAs pick and choose where they want to go. Get unlucky and no top FA wants your money, and you are stuck with signing under-performing long term contracts that handcuff you for years. Look at the Knicks and Cleveland...

Almost always franchise level FAs stay with their team. When was the last time a top FA didn't resign with their team? Kidd resigned with the Nets.

Shaq going to the Lakers.

Maybe Nash? Except he wasn't a franchise player at the time Dallas let him go.

Maybe Boozer -- but he wasn't the player he is today either.

We definitely should rebuild on the fly if possible. This trade would have let that happen...

Thanks for making my point realmavsfan. If you actually read the post you'd see I said that teams will not be willing to give George a decent deal, ala MLE, thus at least he'd be able to get more if he was part of a bigger deal with another asset, ala Terry or Harris, in a Dallas trade. Once he gives that up, he's not getting anyone's MLE and probably won't even get to share it. Perhaps you were distracted. In a salary swap of contracts, his S&T - - - hellllllo Aaron Mckie, KVH, ----- ability is worth something to get a deal done. And more money for him than he'd see through FA.
