Ok, you're Joe Dumars, the trade deadline is coming. Here are a few assumptions:
1. We are not dealing any of our core players - starters plus Stuckey, Amir and Maxiell.
2. We are not dealing Lindsey Hunter
3. We are only dealing expiring deals and draft picks, and if you trade Herrmann AND Hayes, we should probably get a SF back :-)

What is the best trade that you can pull off to help the Pistons this year win a Championship?

These guys have multi-year deals. Some could be obtained easily, others would need a draft pick or two, a few that might not be enough.

Detroit trades:
Walter Hermann (Expiring)
Primo Brezec (Expiring)
Jarvis Hayes (Expiring)

2008 Unprotected First round pic

Houston trades:
Shane Battier
Dikembe Mutombo (must agree to trade)

Why for Detroit? They get the perfect backup for Prince. Battier can also play some SG. Dikembe is the 12th man on the playoff roster and could be used sparingly when Detroit needs some size.

Why for Houston? Money Money Money. They are paying the luxury tax this year, and this saves them some money because they are shedding salary. Even though they lose Battier, they have Tmac and Wells at the wing spots, and Hayes and Hermann are decent backups with you consider all the millions they'll save. All the players they get back are expiring so they can basically not have to pay the tax next year. Plus $3 million cash and an extra draft pick in 2008.

Wow, pretty good, in a single trade gets us help at what I consider our two weak spots - backup center (big), and strong backup SF to help against LeBron and Pierce.

I guess maybe we should see what Houston fans think tho. I'm not so sure they'd be happy. I bet they don't care they pay the luxury tax. I know Yao makes them a crapload, and missing the playoffs would probably be pretty bad for the league.

But its not like Battier is having a great year offensively by any means.

I would do this trade:

Detroit Gets The Following Players From New York

1: Jamal Crawford (20.3 PPG, 2.8RPG, 4.8APG) From Michigan.
2: David Lee (10.3PPG, 8.2RPG, 1.0ASP) From Florida.

New York Gets The Following Players From Detroit

1. Flip Murray (7.5PPG, 1.9RPG, 2.3APG)
2. Jarvis Hayes (6.8PPG, 2.3RPG)
3. Walter Herman
4. Primoz Brezec
5. 2008 1st RD Draft Pick, 2010 2nd RD Draft Pick

Why For Us? (+12.9PPG, +4.7RPG, +1.0APG)

I'd be able to share time between Tayshaun/Crawford give the most time to Crawford because he brings great scoring, a huge upgrade from Tayshaun who is really out there only for defensive reasons, even though he's a guard he'd be good enough at SF, even though hes only 6"5, I would also use him as trade bait. David Lee is young and is a great rebounder, he also can be a low post player and I would play him more then I would play Max.

Why For New York? (-12.9PPG, -4.7RPG, -1.0APG)

They are beginning a rebuilding process and 4 expiring contracts helps them, as well as the draft picks, it helps them get younger players and less "Ball-hogged" players.

In the long run:

We would be able to get rid of a few young bigs because of David Lee's future, Jamal Crawford could be used as trade bait.

Remember: This trade is only for us to win a NBA championship NOW, David Lee would be a keeper Crawford would be gone in a season or two for either draft picks or other young bright players

Dont see that one working. Crawford and Lee are probably the main guys the Knicks ARENT completely desperate to get rid of, along with Robinson and Balkman. They dont get a whole lot after this deal. If we can get "draft picks or bright young players" for Crawford down the road, why shouldnt the Knicks expect that much and then some for him and Lee now?

I think Id do the Battier trade, and its good that people arent going the unrealistic route and trying to land us a star.

The Rockets' big run before the All-Star break might prevent them from breaking things up. I could've definitely seen them do this if they had puttered around like they were at the beginning of the season.

The stars are lined up similar to 04... this is a rare op to use multiple exps to acquire a big man.... all things being equal we should use the assets for a center as they are much harder to find via FA and the draft.... Our MLE could bring in a solid SG/SF this summer.

Part 1

Seattle receives: Dice, Murray, 1st rounder
Detroit receives: Wilcox, Gelabale

Wilcox would play exclusively at Center... his forte is the P&R and scoring in the paint.
His contract expires the same year as Sheed's... this lines up with bringing Samb into a larger role.
It gives Amir a chance to gain minutes while making our backup 5 a strength instead of the current weakness.
Gelabale assigned to the D-League for depth
Seattle releases Murray. They finally get to test their young bigs that they spent 1st rounders on.... Not likely Wilcox would re-sign with them anyways.

C- Sheed, Wilcox, Brezec
PF- Maxiell, Amir, Wilcox
SF- Tay, Hermann, Hayes
SG- Rip, Afflalo, Stuckey
PG- C.B., Stuckey, Hunter

Part 2

Memphis receives: Brezec, Hermann, Hayes, Afflalo, our TPE
Pistons receive: Miller, Jacobson (exp filler)

It gives the Grizz more PT for Rudy Gay and our 07 1st rounder (Afflalo).

New lineup:

C- Sheed 30 MPG... Wilcox 18 MPG, Samb (insurance)
PF- Jmax 25 MPG, Amir 23 MPG, Wilcox (in case these kids don't cut it)
SF- Tay 23 MPG, Miller 25 MPG, Amir
SG- Rip 32 MPG, Tay 8 MPG, Stuckey 8 MPG
PG- C.B. 32 MPG, Stuckey 16 MPG, Hunter (playoffs)

Losing Afflalo is tough but Miller and Tay are clearly a better option for a few years.

Trades work for both sides... while adressing our depth issues without putting us into the lux tax.

Dikembe Mutombo alone would have been a good fit, though again if he was looking to be moved he'd probably rather move to one of the other two Texas teams that would certainly be interested.

Dik could come in and be our emergency bigman, while mentoring Samb for the second half of the season. Mutombo is supposed to be one of the best guys in the nba, so there wouldn't have been any lockerroom concerns.

Something like Brezec and Minnesota's second rounder for Dik would have been something to consider.

Why for Detroit:
We don't take on any contracts and we get two players who fit exactly what we need. Pietrus fits the athletic, defensive minded forward off the bench and Magilore is the perfect fit for a big man to throw in for 6 solid fouls in the playoffs.

Why for New Jersey:
Brezec and Croshere will do more for them then Magilore has and they don't have the ego Magilore has.

Why for Golden State:
They get two guys who are perfect for their system, for a guy who they don't use and a guy who doesn't want to be there.

Prince, Herrman, Flip and Primo for McGrady. Now, that would be a starting lineup.

Prince, Herrman, Flip and Primo for Maggette and Cassell. Sam's contract comes off at the end of the year. Still, a nice starting lineup and an nice Backup PG with Sam or Billups sometimes sliding over to the 2.

Herrman, Flip and Primo for Artest. Backups for a dude that plays great defense and can score yet pass very well. The Pistons can even get him 10-15 mpg at the 4, which would be nice.

Prince, Herrman, Flip and Primo for Kirilenko. My leaast favorite, but you never know what this dude can accomplish.

This is where I have a problem. I'm of the opinion that we'll eventually need to move one of Maxiell or Amir as a result of the Dice extension. JMax looks like the obvious candidate. IF we were to try and get in on the Kidd trade I think we'd have to look at swapping out Maxiell for Diop.

What we'd lose is Maxiells agresiveness around the basket at the offensive end, but in theory it would open up more minutes for Amir and we'd get more defensive rebounding and shotblocking. I think you'd try to pair up the savy vet in Sheed w/ the young Amir and then allow Diop to protect w/ the rim while pairing him w/ Dice.

But I'll give the presented scenario some more thought and see what I can come up with that fits within those guidelines.

There is no reason to move one of them because of the Dice extension. Next year is his last guaranteed year with the Pistons, and his expiring contract could be dealt, or he could be used as a 4th or 5th big off the bench.

I think the only reason to move one would be that you can't envision them playing next to each other. Neither can really play center effectively against quality big men. It certainly looks like Max is going to be a starter in this league... Amir won't be happy being a 14-15 MPG backup when his deal is up in 2 1/2 years.

For this season, I think both are certainly keepers.

Dice is probably underpaid this season.

He's putting up 10 and 8 shooting 50% from the floor and playing solid D.

For the money a lot of big men get, he certainly isn't a bad contract.

Nazr was our only supposed bad contract and we moved him for expiring no problem.

The Dice extension was a little bit of a headscratcher at the time, but Im not gonna complain about it now. He's playing well, and while Maxiell and Amir have shown a lot of progress, this team isnt gonna be ready to turn over duties to just them and Rasheed for a couple of years at least.

Id agree that ultimately we have a bunch of 4's and one should be traded for a center, in a perfect world. Not sure who would be attainable, but Maxiell seems to be the logical choice.
