1. Al Horford, F-C, Atlanta

Why does Horford deserve to overtake the No. 1 spot from Durant 15 weeks into the season? Let's take a quick look at the r

Al would a have a legit shot at this if it was voted on by coaches and scouts, rather than the media. There's not a shot in hell he'll win because of all the hype surrounding Durant.

The reason Acie is not the savior is complicated:

1) He is not as good or as NBA-ready as people thought he was
2) He's still more of a score-first point than a pass-first point
3) He isn't given consistent enough minutes to adjust and improve

Law gets others involved fine, it's his scoring that needs work. If he started hitting his shots he would be perfect for us.

But it's nice to see Horford finally top those rankings. It's a joke that it took this long. Not that it matters at all. :D

Im thinking, unless we upgrade the point spot, there would have to be a point where we just play AC yeah?

I think generally point guards take a little longer to get it... There are some exceptions (Paul) but guys like Felton and Williams took a little longer to show something... Remember Billups his rookie year? Or JT?

Horford and Conley(who has been hurt) have been the most impressive rookies I've seen although I think Thornton's recent stretch has been the most impressive of any rookie this year. Durant winning the ROY would be a joke...all he does is chuck shots and play bad defense.

Hawks have to make the playoffs for Horford even to have a chance to win ROY, I'm afraid.

I disagree with you here. There is no way Durant is going to be making the playoffs with the Sonics this season, and the Sonics fans were ready to anoint him the Rookie of the Year once they found out Oden was going to be out all season.

Al has been playing great and I don't see why he can't get Rookie of the Year without the Hawks making the playoffs.

None of the other top rookies are going to make the playoffs. I think Horford has to score more to be a lock for ROY because Durant's 19 ppg doubles Horford's despite Durant getting alot more shots. You also have to factor in that the Hawks are the only team in the NBA that hasn't had a nationally televised game in the last 2-3 years or so...that will hurt him. Playing well tonight will help even if it's in a meaningless game in which they don't play defense.

Hype is why Emeka Okafor got Rookie of the Year over Dwight Howard a few years back?

If you mean that due to Horford not having the hype that Durant does that the Hawks have to make the playoffs for him to have a chance, then I can see your point.

Yes, Okafor is still mostly hype.

Emeka got the ROY because he was better than Howard their rookie years(especially statistically)...infact Okafor had more hype going into the NBA than Howard. There were not many who thought Orlando made the right choice in taking Howard because he was a great prospect but not a Lebron/Oden/ lock where people knew he was going 1st in the draft during his sophmore year. I don't think many people expected Howard to start right off the bat and average a double double especially considering what Kwame/Curry/Chandler did during their rookie years. Howard exceeded his hype during his 1st year..Durant has not really lived up to his(although I still think he's going to be the 2nd best player behind Oden) Durant's numbers(at 1st glance) are prettier than Horfords and he was considered a lock for the ROY once Oden went down.

Sean Williams is quickly becoming one of my least favorite players...keep in mind that this is the same guy who waved bye to the Hawks bench and crowd the last time they beat us and it was not in a "friendly" matter. I've rooted for a bunch of over-competitive players who have crossed the line in the heat of the moment but how dumb do you have to be to do this after an exhibition game on live TV?

Well I guess I'm just trying to say that I think it sucks that a guy that just scores.....and not even at a great clip....will potentially win rookie of the year over a defensive monster and more deserving player in Horford.

Well, I hope the NBA does something about it. I mean Josh Smith and Bogut get fined 11 G's, so should Sean Williams, and considering the game was on national tv.

I think Horford would rather make the playoffs than win ROTY.

But I think we do have to make it for him to have a shot.

People are forgetting how much hype Durant has
