so instead of the fans and coaches getting criticized for deserving players who were omitted, the blame would be pointed at the NBA's best players? no way, horrible idea.
why not just expand to 15 man rosters as there are more teams and more players than there used to be? and then play 15 min quarters so everyone gets plenty of burn?

Genius! The game is tired and boring, so you add more players and make the game longer!

i fail to see the connection.
hypothetical - kobe gets the most votes and selects his team but doesnt pick deron williams, brandon roy, or baron davis. now Jazz, Blazer, and W's fans are all pi$$ed at kobe as are the omitted players. we are having 45 page threads here on realgm about how horrible of a job he did picking the team, stein is writing articles about how kobe screwed up in his picks, etc etc.
all of this would happen.

Forget all of that...
Wilbon is right though, the ASG needs a serious revamp.
First things first, get one big sponsor each for the Three Point Shootout, Dunk Contest, and Skills Challenge. Then give a Million dollar prize for each contest. Stipulation -- the player needs to donate $500,000 of it to charity. They can keep the other half.
As for the actual game... The talent is too loaded in the West... and the fan vote is a joke. Give all voting power to the coaches... make a 25 man roster, 5 for each position... then one wildcard player (any position). Conference has nothing to do with anything. Then, split the teams down the middle... based on coaches' vote (as in if Lebron got 30 votes, Kobe got 30 votes, Garnett got 29, Duncan got 29... then you put Lebron on one team, Kobe on another, then Garnett on one, then Duncan on the other and so forth... also taking into account the position of the player.)
Along with the roster changes, give the winning team players $50,000 each -- $25,000 of which they must give to charity.
What do you guys think? I think it makes the game more interesting and at the same time, gives back to charities... and gets the players to really bring their game if they want the $$$.

I don't like the idea of American versus the world because we are already trying to assume that the NBA has the best players in the entire world. So the Dirks and the Yaos belong aside the Duncans and the Kobes. That may not make sense but it's just...the NBA is supposed to be the epitome of what WORLD CLASS basketball is.
Could the all-star weekend use new life? Sure it could. But there are a lot of crazy theories out there, and I don't think I buy very many of them

Plus the International team would have the same players every year

That is a terrible terrible idea. There's going to be a lot offended people whwen they dont get picked.
The only real thing that needs to change is to find some way to make the game competative the whole way through. The ASG is boring as crap through the 1st 3 quarters. Players dont really compete. I want to see these superstars really take it to each other. Maybe offering a good cash prize to everyone on the winning team or something I dunno.

Imagine if people went to the All-Star Game and ending up watching a meaningless Rockets vs. Bucks game?

Wilbon's idea is great except that as mentioned, there's some level of anonymity right now and that would be completely removed, putting the captain in an awfully tight spot. It'd be fun for us but hell for Kobe and KG.

i think the idea was to have the all-stars already selected, leaving the actual team rosters to the top two vote getters. having the top two vote getters actually select who is an all-star is a terrible idea, which is why i doubt that was the intent of the suggestion.
