Bibby traded for nothing

Bibby to ATL for Shelden Williams, Tyronnnnnnn Lue, Anthony Johnson and Lorenzen Wright (expirings)

So...is this the beginning of the Kings fire sale? Will Memphis follow up on its fire sale? Who's next? Ron Artest? Brad Miller? Mike Miller? Talk about a crazy season for trades.

Star traded - Package received
Garnett for Jefferson, Telfair, Gomes, Green, Ratliff, 2 1sts
Shaq for Marion, Banks
Marion for Shaq
Bibby for Williams, Lue, Johnson, Wright
Gasol for
Allen for Szczerbiak, West, Green

am I missing any?
Thriving on mediocrity since '89.

Bibby is a guy who's paid $14.5 mil next season, in an NBA economy where max deals, like LeBron has now, start at $13. Guys with giant deals, like Jermaine O'Neal (averaging $21 mil for three years), simply can't produce enough to justify that kind of price tag. I was frankly surprised that Kidd brought back as much as he did, but perhaps that was because the Nets would have to buy out Stackhouse.

This isn't a fire sale. SAC looked at the improving West, and today's economics, and realized that escaping bibby's salary next year was a pretty good offer. This is particularly true at PG, where a fine young crop is displacing the big name, big contract stars.

So Sac joins the Wolves in the exclusive club of teams that got royally screwed by not grandfathering old large contracts in to the new CBA.

Why do you say that? I thought we did terrific in the BOS trade. Check this out:

http://www.82games.com/0506/fairsalary0506.htm

In 05-06, Garnett has another good individual season, and was paid $18.0 mil for it. 82games.com factored in the production to find out what his "Fair salary" should be based solely on production, and came up with a figure of $18.8, which is near the top of the league for players that didn't get to produce in the play-offs. A figure like this shows the relationship -- KG was paid fairly, but he was no trade bargain for a team's finances.

For the Wolves, KG means more than just his production, and his off-court impact on ticket sales and marketing probably doubles his worth to us. However, the package we got from BOS was a full boat load of value -- no Jerry Stackhouse deals in it at all. We got a terrific young big man, we got young guys with potential that didn't have big contracts, we got a huge expiring, we got a TPE for instant savings, and we got two 1st round picks.

KG is paid $24 mil this season, and he will not produce $24 mil on the floor. He simply isn't worth that, with LeBron, Bosh, Carmello and Wade getting $13. Now if he brings BOS a title, then he's worth it to the Celtics. However, we weren't getting a title. We did get plenty from BOS for the full amount of KG's considerable salary, and I'm happy with the trade.

Being screwed came from having to trade KG in the first place. Were KG's contract grandfathered into the CBA (like only counting the value of a current max contract against the cap) Wolves could have very well had a very different post-2003-04.

Anyone seen Justin Williams play for SAC? To make this trade, SAC needed to cut the guy.

He worth buying out Doleac for, to take a look? Kings fans thought he was going to be great, but West coast fans are all like that with their prospects.

I actually like what the Kings got for Bibby. His value was very low due to coming back from being out so long and trying to get your feet back under you, and as Shrink said, they saw that the West was only getting stronger, and that SAC wouldnt have even been able to compete for 2-3 more years anyway.

CLE couldnt offer the expirings that ATL did. This was what they were going to get. A $10+ Million dollar expiring btwn the three players is nothing to mock seeing as how highly most of us value Ratliff.

A Hawes/Williams frontcourt could prove to be very dangerous if both prospects pan out. Lots of people said all Shelden needed was the time of day, and now he gets that.
