Post#1 » by Jammer » Sun Feb 17, 2008 12:22 am

With 14 players already under contract, after completing a five for 1 with Atlanta,

Sacramento had to waive two players.

They decided on Dahntay Jones & Justin Williams.

The Mike Bibby trade was Bibby to Atlanta for:

Hawks 2008 2nd Round Pick
PF Sheldon Williams
C Lorenzon Wright (Expiring)
PG Anthony Johnson (Expiring)
PG/SG Tyronn Lue (Expiring)

Sacto probably just waived them so they had room to make the trade and now will wave two of the new guys and resign Williams and Jones. I think they'll wait till the trade deadline to do it though, just incase anything comes up that they can get involved with.

Williams has been put on waivers. Boston can claim him for about $400k (roughly half his salary) plus another $400k in luxury tax. If Boston wanted him it would cost the C's about $800k.

And Sactown couldn't resign them until 30 days after they clear waivers.

I would be happy if we could get Justin Williams. Definitely fills a need. But Danny still thinks we are totally fine.

And Justin Williams is going to tip the balance? He wouldn't even get playing time as Powe and Big Baby would clearly be ahead of him on the depth chart. Even if Danny liked him, we probably wouldn't get him because he got into some legal trouble earlier in the season and the owners wouldn't allow that.

If we NEED to make a move it's not the kind that involves adding a 15th man to the roster. No team ever NEEDS a move like that to combat the moves of other teams.

It all really depends on the injuries IMO. Big Baby is out for a month more likely than not. Scal and Perk are also out with groin and shoulder woes respectively though I have no idea for how long they'll be out. We're pretty thin up front right now so getting an extra big that can actually play C for 15 min a night is plausible even if it's just a stopgap. If everybody was healthy then yes i would agree we don't need Williams but the fact are otherwise.

Not really. We have Powe who has been playing really well lately, KG is expected to come back as soon as Tuesday, and so is Big Baby according to Doc in the Globe.

Doc Rivers gave an update on the latest of the injured Celtics and it's a good news/bad news thing. Brian Scalabrine, who strained his right groin against the Knicks Wednesday, is the bad news part. "I think Scal is going to be out for a while," Rivers said. "We don't know how long. Groin pulls are tough." The good news was for Glen Davis, who strained his left quad in the same game and also has a knee bruise. "Baby's fine," Rivers said of Davis. "He should be back at practice [tomorrow] and playing Tuesday."

Also, I wouldn't expect Perk to be out too long. I wouldn't be surprised if he's back Tuesday as well.

When I wrote that I hadn't read the stuff in the globe so my assumption was that the only bigs available were Powe and KG (Posey is not a big). A rotation of 2 1/2 bigs is really not a good thing. However having Baby back would eliminate the need for Williams, I agree in that regard.

he's cheap. we can give him a try and see how he fairs before we lock him up to a guaranteed deal. besides, a 6'10 athletic big man who will rebound and block shots for us wouldn't hurt.

If we were to take either of these guys I'd be interested in Jones, he would be very good TA insurance.

Justin Williams is a better player than people think. He's an excellent shot blocker and Sacramento fans seem to love him(and hate Mikki Moore.) We don't need anymore than someone who can block shots, get rebounds, and throw down the occasional open dunk. Look how effective Powe has been. Williams is pretty much a more athletic, better shot blocking, version of Powe, without the FT shooting.

jones was already a celtic at the start of the season and we cut him maybe because we don't need him. justin williams is a very good compliment to our big man play. name anyone in the c's roster who's game is synonymous to his.
