Kapono/Mitchell
The three point contest only brings to light again that Sam is vastly underutilizing Kapono. Mitchell has to design plays to GET Jason shots. Kapono will never be great at getting his own shots so it is on the coach to design plays for Kapono. I understand that we have other good shooters and other options offensively, but I don't think we realize just how good a shooter JK is. He is currently the best % three point shooter in NBA history (by a significant margin). He is now the two time defending three point champion. That said, Kapono only has THREE attempts the last TEN games. Not enough. Go Raps.

Do you watch basketball...you know, there exists something -- in the game, called defense. Yeah, it's easy to nail 3's when you're standing wide open...but when you have defenders playing defense...it's a bit harder to nail 3's.
My name is Taiyab, and I realize there is an intra-team conflict at the Point Guard spot.

I would have to agree with the OP simply because of this:
He has been starting Moon since the beginning of the season. If TJ never got injured, Kapono would be playing with Jose at the point off the bench. Therefore, it shouldnt be a problem to get Kapono shots with Jose because this was the original plan anyway.

Good Point.
But that's what the OP was talking about when he said Sam should run plays to get Kapono open.
I agree with OP.

it's not so much that Smitch is not trying to utilized Kapono's 3 point shooting ability, it's just that everytime he is on the floor the opponents are alert when he is around and ready to close up on him...notice why he fakes a 3 and drives and do that little one handed floater...or fakes and goes in the perimeter and shoots a 2...but when he is open he takes it, quickest release the defender couldnt even recover fast enough

Yes jk is so far underutilized. But a lot has to do with his D. However, I would like to see more offense for defense possession subs at the end n close games, Personally i think Sam i adverse to changing the game plan because he's not confident in his judgment and he doesn't want one of his moves to be so obviously open to scrutiny, when he could just shrug and say guys didn't play well, as opposed to taking the initiative to exploit their strengths and minimize their weaknesses.
It's been mentioned many times but Sam has a relationship with Moon that's more than the other players. BC himself has said his kinship with Sam is as much responsible for his opportunity. Not his success, but his opportunity.

est we forget the hot streak Kapono was on in the 2nd month of the season?
the streak that ended around the time of Ford's injury?
you don't run plays for Kapono. Kapono gets open shots based on plays run within plays. Bosh gets doubleteamed, so he kicks it out to Kapono. or Kapono and Ford do that lovely baseline passing play.

defenses never sag off of kapono. ever because that's all he does. he needs to learn to dribble and shoot similar to ap. it'll help him out a LOT. he doesn't need to dribble a lot just one or two dribbles then pull up for the shot. if we can give him the ball and he can create shots for himself we'd have another weapon on offense.

Just give the ball to the man and let him jack it up. If he does not attempt at least 5 three's in a game, its a travesty (as Barkley would say).
I mean, Delfino holds the ball three feet behind the three point line, looks around to see his team mates wide open, and jacks it up anyway. I don't see why 'Pono can't do that.

The entire second unit has been less productive because of TJ's injury and subsequent starting by Jose. Jose's starts have taken away from the second unit and what he brought to it. Everything he is doing now with the starters, breaking down the defense, 1-5 pick and roll, all lends to what has ailed us since TJ went down.
Hopefully, as we have seen in the last couple of games with TJ back, all will be OK.

Look. Guys, just because Kapono is the best standstill shooter in the league doesn't mean he can be averaging 20 ppg. Craig Hodges, arguably the greatest 3 point champ ever, probably played even less minutes than Kapono when he was on the Bulls in the late 80s.
I love Kapono, but he's more a weapon than someone who warrants altering your offence to accomodate him.
