Official Mid-Season Grades Thread

(Mods, please sticky.)

Well, it's been more than half of a season but the All-Star break is the perfect time to grade how the Wizards players have performed to this point. You can grade any or all of the players and even grade the various positions as a group.

Incompletes:
1) Etan
2) Arenas

A+
1) Haywood
His excellent FT shooting, defense, rebounding, and play have saved this team. He's shown what we have known for the past four years.
2) Caron
Took his game to a new level. A leader who toughs it out.
A
3) Jamison
Rebounding as well as ever. He's been so solid this year. Needs to stop jacking so many shots, but most of those were when Caron and AD were out.
B+
4) Mason
Earned himself a nice raise in the off-season. Total professional who knows his role.
B
5) Blatche
Showed tons of flashes this year (dominating Okefor), (shutting down Boozer). Must get more conditioning.
B-
6) Stevenson
Played great defense this year. He knows his role. His tough and "thug" play helped win the Boston games. Would like him to improve his outside shot, but I assume he'll do that once Arenas gets back.
7) AD
Has had trouble defending this year, but a total pro who can run an offense.
C+
8) Nick Young
Good moments and bad moments for the rookie. He's defended way better than I thought he would. Also has shown excellent ball handling skills.
9) Dmac
I was expecting more, but if he concentrates on rebounding, blocking shots, and garbage getting points, he has a future.
C
10) OPEC
Has to learn to stop taking so many threes. Get comfortable out there. He is active and a rebounder though.
D-
11) Songaila
Where has his J gone? Human turnover machine who has lost us games this year.

NOTE: All grades are based on my expectations of the players and whether they exceeded them or not. If they performed just as good as I predicted, they get a C. If they perform minorly better, a B. So forth and so on....

Brendan Haywood: A (would be an A+, but he started out "phenomenal" and has since regressed to "very good")

Oleksiy Pecherov: C (Extremely inconsistent shooting and a bit trigger-happy. Seems to understand the game, though, on the defensive end and rebounding)

Etan Thomas: I

Antawn Jamison: A (Mr. Double Double. The only reason he doesn't have an A+ has been the sub-par shooting efficiency)

Andray Blatche: B+ (He's progressing better than we hoped, IMHO, but has still shown a lot of inconsistency)

Darius Songaila: F (One of the biggest disappointments. He was a serviceable bench forward last season where one of his only positive attributes was actually being exercised - shooting)

Caron Butler: A+ (Who in the hell would have expected a jump from All-Star caliber player to superstar caliber player, while, when healthy, being in the top-10 in MVP voting?)

Dominic McGuire: D (Flashes of Rodman-esque rebounding prowess. Flashes of Ruffin-esque offensive uselessness and a turnover waiting to happen. He has, however, been playing a lot better lately)

DeShawn Stevenson: C+ (The offense has taken a hit, but his defense has been outstanding - compensating for the lack of shooting and THEN some - thus the "+")

Nick Young: C (The stereotypical rookie - incredible one night / horrific the next. Heck, Young's effectiveness is on a possession to possession basis nowadays)

Roger Mason Jr: A+ (I never, in my wildest dreams, would have seen Mason Jr be a rock-solid, consistent contributor off the bench. But he has been just that and much more)

Gilbert Arenas: I

Antonio Daniels: B (Aside from the injuries, he's been the calming presence on our team, usually not letting things get out of hand. If he could just realize that an AD 3pt attempt is roughly equivalent to 0 possible points, he'd get an B+. If he could step it up on defense, he'd get an A)

miller31time wrote:Brendan Haywood: A (would be an A+, but he started out "phenomenal" and has since regressed to "very good")

Actually, Haywood has remained remarkably consistent all season. He started out with a PER around 20, he had a bit of a lull in January where he posted a PER 16-17 range, and he picked it back up again in February. His PER is currently 19. He is playing as well now as he has all season.

Haywood put up some ridiculous rebounding numbers in the first 3 games, but that's only because there were so many misses to be rebounded.

I'm going to shock the world and give Haywood an A+ ranking. The guy is unquestionably a top 10 center in the league right now. You can make a valid case that he is the 2nd best center in the East. If someone had predicted that last year, they would have been institutionalized.

Butler also gets an A+. I had him as an A, but then Daniels went down and Butler decided the team needed him to play PG. So he proceeded to average 7 assists per game while dropping his turnover rate to about 2 a game. The guy can do it all.

Jamison gets an A. He'd get an A+ but his shooting percentages have been somewhat low all year. I love the rebounding and the improved defense though.

I'll do the rest of my grades later.

I pretty much agree with MHD and Miller Time except when it comes to DeShawn. I think you give him too much credit. I don't see his defense at all and feel that RM Jr. is a better on-the-ball, man-to-man defender. Offensively, I think DS has become a one-dimensional long range shooter. He doesn't drive nearly as much as last year. When his shot is on, he will win games single-handedly. When the shot is off, he can lose them single-handedly. Lastly, some of his late game offensive decisions earlier in the season were wildly inconsistent...some horrendous (turnovers on bad passes, forced on-on-one jumpers under pressure) and, other times, some incredibly clutch shots. For this overall inconsistency, considering the new contract, I find him disappointing and give him a C-.

Also, I think this thread demands that we grade the coaches and the front office (including Abe and his fiscal conservatism...ie Mike Wilks... and his infatuation with EJ) along with the players.

Lastly, post of the year so far goes to the hysterical story about poon hunter, Steve Buckhantz, about 6 weeks ago.

Etan and Gil can't be graded...I'm not going to grade Pecherov either

A+

Caron - Best player on the team not named Gilbert. Does it all.

A

Antawn - Our leader, awesome in every aspect of the game except defense (which he has gotten better at)

Antonio - Really stepped up in Gil's absence. He can give you everything, Scoring, passing, rebounds, defense. He just needs some help.

B+

Brendan - Starting to act like a starter. Still not as consistent as he needs to be. He'll still have a game where he disappears.

DeShawn - Yes, he can score and defend, but he like Haywood will disappear for periods of time.

B

Andray - The future of our franchise. With starting minutes, he is very solid. Needs to watch the turnovers, and needs to become more productive off of the bench.

Roger - Wow...this guy came out of nowhere and can really stroke it. I think he is a bit streaky at times, but I think it's safe to say that he now is better than Jarvis Hayes has ever been for our team. Maybe not the best defender, but can handle the ball and shoot the 3.

C+

Nick - He's gonna be a great scorer in this league, but he's too incosistent, like rookies often are. Needs to adjust his attitude and needs to develop a killer instinct.

Dominic - I would have graded him higher, but thus far he's got no offensive game (even though he hasn't really had a chance). He needs to develop a jumpshot and then he'd be a great solid player. His rebounding and shot blocking are great. You can play him at the 3 or the 4.

D

Darius Songaila - Completely inconsistent. Can't defend (he just fouls). When he first joined the team, he hit a lot of open jumpers. He was almost automatic. No, he can't even do that. Plus, he is this year's Etan Thomas (or Michael Ruffin)...an underachiever who has gotten favor with the coach, and gets minutes b/c of it.

Coaching:
Eddie Jordan - B

He has done a great job with injured guys. I still think he's running our starters ragged, and is very incosistent with the bench. One game he'll give Nick Young 15 minutes, and then he won't play him for 2 games. I also don't like how he plays favorites with Songaila.

Randy Ayers - A

He has gotten our guys to play some D, so I gave him an A, even though our D has fallen off some, but I attribute that to our guys being dog tired.

Front Office

Ernie Grunfeld - B
I love his eye for talent (Blatche, Macguire) but I dislike how vanilla he is sometimes. He never looks to make moves to make us better. He won't bring in anyone when half our squad is hurt (10 Day Contract Anyone?). I think a lot of that has to deal with Abe Pollen (who I see to be very, very cheap) so I can't lower his grade anymore.

Overall Team Grade - B-
I had to lower it cus we are sub .500, but we have so many injuries. We'd be scary with the big 3 completely healthy and this bench. Hopefully we will get to see it for a few weeks before the playoffs.

Haywood - A solid A, love the improvement in FT shooting

AJ - also gets an A; he's not rebounding as well as ever, he's
having a career year in that dept. He's still a chucker at times
but that's what the teams needs him to be.

TJ - An A- he's done it all. Can't say more than that.

DeShawn - a solid B; as was said, he knows his role. Has contributed
well but not as consistently as our fwds offensively. His D and toughness
are there every game.

AD - a solid B; a pro's pro who knows how to play.

Blatche - I'm going to grade a bit lower than some. He has clearly
shown tremendous potential. He's also continued to be error and
foul prone, some of which is not completely his fault. I give him
a C+/B-.

Mason - B+, has become a solid role player after having been a
fringe player.

N1 - a C, like Blatche, he's shown he has a future. Has also shown
he's got a lot to learn.

DMac - a C, not sure why the team always went into a funk when
he played earlier in the year. It didn't seem to me to be his fault
every time. But he's starting to find a niche that will at a min, keep
him in the league.

DSong - a D - not the player he was even last year coming off back
surgery. His J was nearly automatic last year when he was open.
He's struggled in almost every aspect this year.

OPec - almost deserves an I, hasn't played that much. A C if I had
to grade him.

A
+ Antawn Jamison (he's doing what he always does, but with an unexpected bonus dash of non-embarassing defense thrown in)
+ Brendan Haywood (enjoying the ride while it lasts - Etan will be back eventually)
+ Caron Butler (spent the first couple of months as a darkhorse name when mentioning MVP candidates; who would have guessed that?)
+ Etan Thomas (he couldn't possibly do any more to contribute to the overall success of the team on the court than by not playing in any games)

B
+ Andray Blatche (continues to take steps forward towards becoming a darn great player, though there are still serious kinks - almost entirely mental - to be worked out first)
+ Antonio Daniels (really, no complaints at all; does what he does, and we are lucky to have someone so competent having our back with Arenas out)
+ DeShawn Stevenson (defense is better than ever, and I don't fault his iffy level of play on the offensive side of the court, since that's not supposed to be his role and he's just been forced into it)
+ Roger Mason (has moved up from "fringe inactive list fodder" to "second tier rotation worthy", which isn't stellar, but is nice enough on the cheap)

C
+ Dominic McGuire (spent the first half of the year playing like a scared kid, but is looking a lot more like a legit NBA player in recent weeks)
+ Nick Young (flashes foreshadow a future offensive force, but he plays WAY too much like a rookie most of the time to rank higher)

D
+ Oleksiy Pecherov (I really expected more of him, but he's been terrible in all but a handful of his relatively small number of games)

F
+ Darius Songaila (He's the new Ruffin, the guy I am never happy to see enter the game)

Jamison: A. M-F'in Captain. Improved his D.

Butler: A. Improved his range, took scoring to a new level.

Haywood: A. Anchored the defensive improvement. His shooting (especially FT) metamorphosis has been staggering. You just don't see that with NBA vets very often.

DeShawn: B/B+. Would be solid B+/A- were it not for injuries -- his and his teammates that have forced him into expanded responsibility. He's shown to be a warrior, willing defender, and well on his way to being DC's Raja Bell.

AD: B/B+. Would be the perfect backup PG. Guts, smarts, guile. Needs to be careful about how much abandon he plays with. team cannot afford any more injuries.

Blatche: B-. Love the kid and his potential as well as the flashes he has shown. Needs to learn to bring it every night, no matter what. Gotta add some muscle to his upper body.

Young: C-. Only helps the team when he's making shots. His athletic gifts are impressive, but he's a long way away from being a reliable contributor.

McGuire: C. Something has clicked recently. His shot needs work, but the Ruffin comparison doesn't fly. Spidey can score on the break, oops, putbacks and his offensive game will grow. He's got a quiet confidence and maturity about him that bely success.

Songaila: D+. Completely ineffective at defensive center. Seems like he's running with bricks in his shoes. Foul machine. Would love for Etan, Blatche and Pech to be getting his minutes.

Mason: B-. He's had some great moments, but if he's playing big minutes the Wiz are in trouble. Love the Sidwell/Good Counsel roots and love it when his J is on. He and AD make a nice backup backcourt.

Pecherov: C-. You can see the tools to be a better version of Darius, which is really all we need him to be. he just needs to learn what a good shot is, and to never forget to mix it up on the boards.

Etan: I. Get well. Get your body ready for 10 minutes a night of banging on Dwight Howard come May.

Gil: I-. The Calderon comments showed a disappointing lack of class. Overdoing it over the summer hurt the team. Hopefully he can light the Hibachi back up in the second half and lead a deep playoff run.

EG: A. Best GM in town since Bobby Beatherd, and he had the Squire's money and no salary cap.

EJ: B. He's held the team together and kept the ship afloat amidst tons of lost man-games from contributors, and the significance of this cannot be overstated. Coherent rotation is lacking, but he's trying to see what the kids are made of while keeping said ship afloat. Needs to trust Haywood more.

G-Wiz. F-. Bring back Hoops.

Randy Ayers:A

I wanted to give a B+ because we aren't playing the lock down D consistently, but that has a lot to do with injuries too. Then, when I went over it again, we have come so far from last year...it has to be an A.

Daniels: B+, solid job so far this year

Stevenson: B, hes ok. I'm not to thrilled with him. Hes way to inconsistent offensively, even though thats not his role but we've needed some due to the injuries.

Caron: A+ <3

Antawn: A surprisingly better on defense and rebounding

Haywood: A+ most consistent player in terms of health and production

Mason: B+, overachieved and a good option of the bench

Blatche: B, awesome flashes but I dont like how he produces as a starter but doesn't always as a bench player

Young: B, only because people didn't expect him to do shiet this year yet he has given us quite a few good games and shown flashes of being a lethal scorer

Songaila: BIG FAT F, frickin moron

McGuire: C, im happy for him. He sucked so bad begining of the year but hes finally showing the defense and rebounding skills. Any sort of offensive game and I could see him becoming a Gerald Wallace type player down the road.

Pecherov: C-, will be good. But right now hes not. Still better than Songaila though.

Players:

A: Caron Butler - Stepped up as a true leader. The toughest player on the court. He's also made great strides defensively.

A-: Brendan Haywood - Made unbelievable strides in his game. The free throw shooting, the developing offensive arsenal and the continued impact on D. Definitely this team's unsung hero.

B: Antwan Jamison - 20 & 10 every night is nothing to sneeze at. I think the leadership thing has gotten overvalued a bit but he's proven his worth. He defends slightly better but I would still say that a sore spot for the team in general. I wish his shot selection was a bit better though.

B-: Andray Blatche - He'd get a higher grade if he could somehow avoid foul trouble on a nightly basis. That's his huge achillies heel right now. Still dribbles too much and the coaching staff still has him out on the perimeter more than I like. I'd love to see Hakeem Olajuwon tutor this kid. Once he realizes he should be 15ft and in all the time, he'll really blow up.

C+: Antonio Daniels - Solid heady vet who stepped up when needed. Still has shown his age a bit, gets banged up pretty easily now. He's also been consistent victim on the perimeter defensively. Would be much better off the bench but I give him credit for giving his all and being an on-court leader.

C: DeShawn Stevenson - Defense has been his saving grace. Definitely raised that aspect of his game from being just a "supposed stopper" to actually shutting down or limiting oppossing SGs. Offensively there's still alot missing to his game. Ballhandling has been more passable this year but he's extremely mistake prone when pressed. Pretty much a long range shooter at this point with minimal slashing skills. Can get to the basket once in a while but when he's off...it looks like the '07 playoffs all over again.

C: Roger Mason Jr. - The biggest surprise of the roster IMO. Finally developed some confidence and began hitting that jumper with some regularity. Also developed into a passable 3rd guard capable of running the offense. A smart & heady player and a good active defender.

D: Dominic McGuire - After a strong summer league he dissapeared on the bench after looking totally lost and lacking all sorts of confidence from training camp until recently. His offensive game is still somewhere in Ruffin-land but his nose for the ball and willingness to go get it makes him the HGH version of Ruffin which isn't too bad in stretches. Defensively he's got a ways to go, but he's getting better. Probably more of an undersized 4 at this stage I'm hopeful he's going to continue ot improve and become a rotation fixture down the road.

D: Nick Young - Has great wiggle and body control. A freak athlete and a good ballhandler. Can create any shot that he wants which is why EJ has shown so much confidence in him late in games although its probably undeserved. Plays out of control and lacks on court discipline. Displays poor body language at times and also struggles with concentration. Does display good potential defensively although he's very slight for an SG. He's got the goods but has alot of growing up to do.

F: Darius Songaila - He's been terrible. Just terrible. Supposedly a good mid-range shooter but the shot has not been going down this year. Supposedly a good passer but has made a number of terrible decisions with the ball. Fails to corral most rebounds due to lack of length and athleticism...the most he can usually hope for is to tip it to a teammate. Can't defend anyone in particular but can most certainly give a hard foul. A nice guy...but overpaid and probably shouldn't be getting many minutes out there.

Incomplete: Oleskiy Pecherov - Just not enough to go on yet. He's still probably getting in shape. Has a nice stroke but its been rushed in games. Goes after rebounds hard but doesn't get many of them. Appears to be a bit of a black hole offensively. However he's 7-0 and has range so there's obviously a reason to have some patience. I think he can have a role in this league but not so much as a starter.

Incomplete: Gilbert Arenas - I only hope he comes back healthy and in "hibachi" mode. His mouth has alot of outstanding checks that need to be cashed.

Incomplete: Etan Thomas - Unfortunately Etan's injury has probably as much to do with Brendan's breakout season as did Brendan's offseason work and on-court performance. It will be interesting to see how this dynamic plays out when or if Etan comes back this year.

Coaching staff:

C: Eddie Jordan & the retained staff - What you see is what you get. EJ is fine at getting his guys ready to play most nights. A very good offensive mind. Has the respect and love of the team for the most part but its those in-game moments which tends to shape the view of those fans who analyze the details closely. He's more gut and feel instead of productivity and skill. His comfort level is associated with activity more than productivity. He relies on certain guys for too many minutes risking breakdown over the course of the season. Slow to develop trust in many guys on the roster.

B+: Randy Ayers - Has done a commendable job this year getting this team to somewhat focus on defense. His real test will come when Gil comes back. His arrival has really upgraded the staff. Great hire by EG after the Tom T incident.

A+: Dave Hopla - Wow, just wow. All you have to do is look at the team FT shooting (specifically Wood) and look at how much guys like Caron & DeShawn have improved their deep stroke. We need to sign this guy to a lifetime contract. Another great hire by EG.

I think one day Darius in an attempt to explain his inability to run, defend, move, shoot showed up in a wheelchair in EJ office and EJ didn't believe him and flipped over his chair, now DSong is threatening to sue if he doesn't get PT.

Jamison: A. Great leadership. Better defensive effort. Posting up more, jacking less.

Butler: A+. Hard to ask for more. Super competitive and addition of three pointer has made him almost impossible to stop.

Haywood: A. Second best center in the East... when in the game of course.

DeShawn: A-. Playing to the best of his capabilities. Has been even better on the ball defending this year. Hot streaks from three have won us at least three games.

Daniels: B+. Apart from slow feet defensively, has exceded expectations. Great leader, calm when required, fiery when necessary.

Blatche: B. Dissappointingly inconsistent. As a starter, he's been very good. Off the bench, too erratic. Fouls a bit too much. Foot speed on d on the perimeter a liability.

Mason: B+. Big, pleasant surprise. Jacks a little too much, but the 2nd unit has needed a fearless shooter. Defense has been pretty good.

McGuire: B-. When given the opportunity, he has soared (literally). There needs to be a way to get him minutes, no matter who is hurt.

Young: C. Some very impressive games, but has yet to convince many of us that he has the basketball instincts to have superior NBA career.

Songaila: F. This year's Arvis. He's the evaporator. He enters, our ten point lead evaporates. He eats the minutes of youngsters like Pech who need them.

Pecherov: C. Almost an incomplete score. Missed too many games then EJ has made his minutes too unpredictable for him to find a rhythm or a role.

EJ: C+/B-. Best coaching job of his tenure here. Still, he makes the same in game mistakes over and over. No situational substitution, too much Darius and small ball. No real rotation.

How does McGuire get a higher score than Young? Dmac litterally had 2 good games the entire season.

Don't get me wrong - I like both players. But Young actually played well enough to make the rotation pretty consistently, with even a few starts. DMac has been pretty horrible this year save for 2 or 3 games.

Continued from a prior post:

Stevenson: B+. He has definitely exceeded expectations. His defense has varied between solid and lockdown this year, depending on the matchup. Offensively, his 3-point shot has been very good, ignoring the first 5 games. He has even shown the ability to get into the lane and actually finish at times. I'm really looking forward to seeing him alongside Arenas. I think he'll do great.

Mason: B. Has matured into a quality role player. He does what he can and doesn't attempt what he can't. His defense has been solid too. I can't rank him higher than this because his per-minute stats are still pretty ordinary. He doesn't give you much outside of scoring and he doesn't draw fouls.

Blatche: B. Great talent. Putting it together this year. Still makes mistakes. No sense rehashing what everyone else has already said.

Nick Young: B-. Has shown flashes of absolutely jawdropping scoring skills. Defensively, he has already improved from laughably bad to mildly below-average. He has all the weaknesses one would expect out of a rookie but I'm encouraged for the future.

Daniels: C. I don't get all the love for Daniels. He has been okay, but not nearly as good as he has been in the past. He has been playing hurt so he has an excuse, but his the bottom line is that he has been a mediocre PG. His scoring is down, his assists are down, and his defense has defenitely regressed. 11 points and 6 assists per 40 minutes is nothing to write home about. His efficiency numbers remain good (TS% around 56.3, 2.0 turnovers per 40) though.

DMac: D. He has had two fabulous games recently to pull him out of the F column, but the rest of his season has been dreadful. I sure hope those recent games are a taste of what the future holds. He could be another Dennis Rodman though I'd like to see him improve his perimeter defense.

Songaila: F. He has been horrible in all aspects of the game except setting picks. Can't shoot, can't dribble, he turns the ball over when he passes, and his defense is laughable. He can still help us in the second half if he can just regain his shooting stroke. I sure miss the DSong of last year who seemed like he never missed an 18-footer.
