Hakeem's Monument

Post#1 » by Eralp » Fri Feb 15, 2008 2:03 pm

The Houston Rockets are set to honor the contributions made by Hakeem Olajuwon to the team with a monument outside of the Toyota Center on April 11, the Associated Press is reporting.

According to the report, organizers said they worked hard to ensure that the monument complied with Olajuwon's Islamic beliefs. It will not include a likeness or picture of the champion Rocket center.

"It's a wonderful monument to the greatest player in the history, I think, of Houston sports, and one of the greatest players of all time in the NBA," Rockets owner Leslie Alexander said.

Islamic art does not allow pictures of living things because it is an affront to copy or imitate Allah's work.

In a picture you are capturing Allah's work. In art work, you are competing with Allah.

There's a difference.

Hakeem got a shout out on The Simpsons tonight
It was one of those story episodes and Marge was playing
Bonnie of Bonnie & Clyde. She said "This is Texas, future home of Hakeem Olajuwon, and I got dreams as big as he will be."

Nice to know he hasn't been forgotten.
Harden is still a work-in-progress. He can score, but he can't help his teammate that much - Yao Ming

So with this be an abstract depiction or how will this monument work?

I look forward to seeing it. Long over due for a permanent fixture of respect.
