Any big free agents after the 2008-2009 season?

Assuming we don't extend Rasheed and Maxiell, and only McDyess' second year is guaranteed, we'd be anywhere from $18-$23 million under the cap.

Of course, only 7 players have contracts through that year, but could we add a big free agent in that offseason?

There are a ton of FA's in 09.

Absolutely loaded.

Best case Sheed resigns for MLE type money to come off the bench and back up a big name FA center.... And Amir develops into the PF of the future.

Some interesting names:

Elton Brand (if he does take his player option)
Allen Iverson
Baron Davis (once again, player option)
Andrew Bogut
Chris Paul
Carlos Boozer
Deron Williams

Doesn't the 09 free agent class include Lebron, Wade and Bosh?

Williams and Paul will most certainly be extended this summer. And even if they weren't they'd be restricted free agents, and even then, we still have Billups and Stuckey under contract, the only reason we'd need one of them is if Stuckey's a bust and or Billups begins to fade fast.

No. They're in the 2010 class.

Not much talent at the center position... best bet is smeone like Diop or Kurt Thomas short term until Samb is ready (assuming he'll get there).

If were really that far below the cap, were gonna end up seriously overpaying to sign someone.

None of those players are worth Sheed/Maxiell/McDyess and the hefty contract they'd receive.

Billups/Stuckey/Iverson? No room. Chris Paul? Wouldn't come. Baron Davis? Minor redundance. Deron Williams? We'd have to overpay and Utah is better for him.
Hamilton/Afflalo
Prince
Johnson
Boozer? Not a C. Brand? Undersized. Bogut? Not worth it.

Like I said, I'd rather keep Rasheed and McDyess' expiring contracts and keep Maxiell at his 6th/7th man role.

Cap space is seriously overrated. We're better off trading for a high lottery pick and stockpiling assets along the way for trades. Keep developing the young guys, use the MLE wisely and thats good management.
