Fixed. Phil cannot coach a young team.

Myth. Pre-Gasol trade the Lakers are the 2nd youngest team next to Portland. With Gasol we are the 8th youngest team. Jackson is actually doing the best coaching job of his career the past three years.

Nooo give Don Nelson a dominant big man to coach please!

I know Nellie coached Dirk and didn't get anywhere, but he is a big reason as to why Dirk is so good today. Someone like Carmelo, KG, LeBron etc. playing for Don Nelson would be SCARY.

I was going to say that Jackson is one of the most under-rated coach. Would you care to give any support for your statement.

Jackson has the highest winning percentage of any NBA coach in the league and I believe he is highest of all time.
He has won more rings than any other coach not named Aurebach. He is the only coach ever to win 3 or more with 2 different teams.

There are 2 myths to Jackson that lead people to make that statement.

The first is that he has only one because he has talent. That is one of the stupidest statements of all time. All coaches win because they have talent. Example A is Riley a very good coach having the worst record in the league. More importantly is example B, which is that all of the teams that Jackson took to championships did not win a championship before him DISPITE MAKING ALMOST NO MOVES TO IMPROVE THE ROSTER WHEN HE GOT THERE. The only major change to the teams from the year before was Jackson himself. That is an example of excellent coaching.

The 2nd myth is that Jackson is some sort of idiot Zen buddist that just manages egos. Perhaps the most over-rated part of Jackson is his people skills. The most under-rated by far is his x's and o's and his creativity. This is evident by his playoff success. The playoff's are when coaching is the most important because you play the same team seven times and it is all about adjustments. He is masterful at those. Jacksons teams have always been one of the top of the league defensively an other example of great coaching. Offence is skill, defense is will and coaching. He has also changed how he coaches from season to season depending on who is in his roaster. How he manages a game now is very different to how he managed the game with Shaq and with Jordan.

I am saying this as a Raps fan and not as a homer Laker by the way.

I REALLY wish that people would list 1-30. I want to see how many times Sam Vincent makes #30.

I also want to see how many people read this then Google "Sam Vincent" to find out who the hell he is!!

Totally arbitrary and erroneous rankings:

1. Popovich, Spurs - terrific in-game coach, and loved by his players. No coach in the league is less likely to lose his locker room.

2. Jackson, Lakers - hard to knock a guy with roughly 75 championships.

3. Riley, Heat - has proven to be remarkably adaptable over the years.

4. Sloan, Jazz - sometimes rides his players too hard, and his 'doghouse player of the month' might be counterproductive at times. Still, hard to argue the results.

5. Saunders, Pistons - very good in-game, and one rarely hears of discord in Detroit.

6. Nelson, Warriors - how can you dislike a guy that thought that Manute Bol shooting threes?

7. Scott, Hornets - doesn't get much publicity, but I've loved him as a coach dating back to his time in New Jersey. Should by COY this season, IMO.

8. D'Antoni, Suns - instituted a terrific system in Phoenix, loses points for the moustache.

9. Johnson, Mavs - would have been higher last season, but some of his in-game substitutions and line-up choices have baffled me.

10. McMillan, Blazers - great teacher, deserves a lot of credit for convincing a very young squad that they could compete in the West this season. Even if the Blazers falter, should also receive COY consideration.

11. Van Gundy, Magic - if he could convince his guards to pass to Howard more frequently (no mean feat), he would jump a few spots.

12. Jordan, Wizards - also a master of baffling in-game substitutions at times, but deserves credit for keeping the team afloat with Arenas injured.

13. Adelman, Rockets - team has struggled more than expected, but still a very good coach.

14. Karl, Nuggets - when he's good, he's very, very good...but his ability to alienate his players over the long haul makes him a bit of a rental.

15. Mitchell, Raptors - rather awful X's and O's coach, but a terrific motivator; the Raptors play badly on occasion, but never quit in the way that typified even the good teams of the Wilkins/O'Neill eras.

16. Cheeks, 76ers - young team overachieved last season, which is definitely to his credit. Could be very successful in Philly, if they can add some talent.

17. Rivers, Boston - still think that he is a poor coach, but his team is too good to rank him in the bottom third.

18. Brown, Cavs - underwhelming for a guy whose team made the Finals last season.

19. Dunleavy, Clippers - not a huge fan, but he has a solid track record.

20. O'Brien, Pacers - don't think that his style is well-suited to the Pacers roster, and after a good start, it really shows.

21. Carlesimo, Sonics - even in defeat, he looks intelligent. That counts for something.

22. Iavaroni, Grizzlies - he'll be a solid coach...if he last long enough for the Grizzlies to rebuild.

23. Theus, Kings - uh, why not?

24. Boylan, Bulls - because I don't know enough about him to rank him any lower.

25. Wittman, Wolves - probably not his fault.

26. Frank, Nets - Jason Collins played 4500+ minutes over the past three seasons. How? Has also watched as a very talented team has slipped into the mire.

27. Woodson, Hawks - Atlanta is on the upswing, but frankly, their record should be better with that talent.

28. Vincent, Bobcats - partially because of a game earlier in the season against Toronto...the Raptors were missing Bosh and a couple other key players, and the Bobcats looked completely disinterested. Ended in a blowout, and their sixth or seventh consecutive loss.

29. Kyrstkowiak, Bucks - another talented team that should be much better. Locker room seems to be in disarray, and that falls on the coach.

30. Thomas, Knicks - ugh.

Mark D'Antoni is the worst.

Nate McMillan should NOT be in anyone's top 10. He's been here 2.5 years, and has yet to get any of his teams to be able to rebound or run a fast break.
Thank you for all the memories BRoy. You were a class act and brought hope to an entire region for 5 years. You will be missed.

Wow, you're an idiot. Isiah Thomas would never rank as a Top 30 coach in the league.

Avery Johnson should not be in the top 10.
