I'm gonna try to respond to two posts at once here.
First off, I can see where both of you guys (d-train and Wiz) are coming from. I can't say I
really disagree with any of the main points you brought out... I'll start out with D's post:
There is good reason to be leery of TJ's health, which is why I figure Raptor's might trade him. If TJ stays healthy, Blazers get an absolute steal. If he continues to be always injured, we didn't give up any core player and we improved our cap space in 2009. That cap space improvement means a very good FA or resigning Channing Frye.
I totally agree that a healthy Ford would be a steal for Portland. When he is at his peak, he gives the Blazers some great speed and can potentially be a Top 10 PG. His height is also a little bit of a concern, but he is able to use it to his advantage some. As long as we have a decent sized defensive PG behind him, we should be ok.
Slow-footed shooters like Kapono are easy to find. I notice Raptors are playing him less than cheap pickups like Moon and Delfino. I don't care what Jones decides to do with his 08/09 option. It is fine with me if he walks. Blazers success this year or future success has nothing to do with Jones.
This is where we part ways. Shooters that are as spot on as Kapono are very hard to come by. He is overpaid and one dimensional, I'll give you that. However, that one dimension has been instrumental in the Blazers success this year.
This brings me to my other point that I disagree with you on. The Blazers success this year HAS had something to do with Jones. To say Jones has had no effect on the teams success is just flat out wrong. You can perfectly match up Jones' timeline of health to the Blazers timeline of winning games. That isn't just some strange coincidence. His outside shooting threat not only made the Blazers a more potent offensive team, it also opened up the lanes and made things easier for Brandon to attack the hoop. Every team needs a deadly shooter like that who can come off the bench and stretch the defense. If Jones walks and we lose him for nothing, we'd better hope Rudy can replace that shooting threat, otherwise we're going to struggle with teams clogging the middle. Not only making it tougher on Brandon, but Greg as well.
Now, as for Wiz, I can definitely see where you're coming from with that logic. Judging by last nights game, they definitely could use a tough minded SF a la Maggette. Mason is a bit too old at this point imo. I'd like to see Portland go after Maggette, but his contract situation kinda scares me.
