No. The rule is that you can't trade 2 years in a row. Last year's doesn't count because that draft is over. If that makes sense.

For instance if we traded a 2009 1st rd. then we couldn't trade our 2008 1st rd.

i understand the 2 1st rounds, its like an 08,10...didnt know about our situation because i just read on florida today and another site and it said "Under NBA rules, Orlando can't include its first-round pick in any potential deals as a sweetener because teams aren't allowed to trade consecutive draft picks."

I'll throw this over here in this thread.....

Just an FYI.

Mike Miller very well may get traded, but he didn't play the second half of the Sonics game last night either. Back spasms. Tweaked his back in the first half so he may not be in the lineup tonight because of his injury from last nights game.

Grizz lose to Sonics [2/19/08]

Miller started the game, and was in and out of the lineup in the first half. The back injury didn't allow Miller to take the floor when the third period began.

According to the article, it might mean that Mike would sit out tonight with the injury.

Just read the bolded parts if you are feeling lazy.

In addition, teams are restricted from trading away future first round draft picks in consecutive years. This is called the "Ted Stepien Rule." Stepien owned the Cavs from 1980-83, and made a series of bad trades that cost the Cavs several years' first round picks. As a result of Stepien's ineptitude, teams are now prevented from making trades which might leave them without a future first-round draft pick in consecutive years.

This rule applies only to future first round picks
. For example, if this is the 2005-06 season, then teams can trade their 2006 first round pick without regard to whether they had a 2005 pick, since their 2005 pick is no longer a future pick. But they can't trade away both their 2006 and 2007 picks, since both are future picks. Teams sometimes work around this rule by trading first round picks in alternate years.

In addition, teams are required to have only a first round pick, and not necessarily their first round pick. So teams may trade away their own future picks in consecutive years if they have another team's first round pick in one of those years.

The more I think about that CLE trade that is rumored I've come to a possibility.

Ilgauskas for Dalembert + 1st (Doesn't have to be lottery because PHI has multiple 1sts.)

This would allow PHI to dump salary for 1 year and would change CLE's dynamic without changing LeBron's role. It would also give CLE an asset to pull off another trade.

This would be a hell of a gamble for Ferry in CLE, but it would make sense if Ferry had another deal lined up behind this one that would get them out of their salary cap hell or fill another need.

Sorry for floating farther OT.

Edit: oops! Nvm PHI doesn't have multiple firsts. LOL. Just pulling things out of my ass here. Pay no attention.

The pick doesn't start until the 2009 draft.

It will definitely be vince Carter for hughes IMHO, two years less on hughes deal BTW so that could be very nice for the nets.

What team would be dumb enough to trade Mike Miller for Drew Gooden?

Return to Orlando Magic
