question about Joe D ?

Post#1 » by hiredgun827 » Thu Feb 21, 2008 4:34 pm

everyone and there mother here has one complaint or another about flip saunders, i do to. My question about joe is why cant he just be coach if this season is a failure . Idk if this question has been asked before but to me it just makes too much sense. The biggest thing with whoever are coach is respect they have to have the respect of the players and larry had that idk if theres a coach out there that can get it out of this group that we can actually get. We all know how the players feel about joe.

your thoughts ?

The same reason Jerry West isn't a coach, Mitch Kup, Matt Millin, Dave Dombrowski, etc.

Riley was a coach first and foremost though.

IMO, the reason Flip is still here is that Davidson probably mandated that this time, the coach has to stay and not be bought out. so barring a regular season disaster, Flip is here to stay till his contract runs out. I'd be shocked though if he was extended.

I found Dumars' act of getting rid of Flip's assistant coaches and trying to hire two former head coaches (Porter, who we got, and O'Brien who didnt take the offer and is now coaching Indy) to be an indirect admission of coaching deficiencies.

Ben Wallace has his moments with each coach, and Chauncey needed some time to adapt to each coach, but this is the first time our players blantantly do not trust or respect the head coach. LB had his moments, but everyone respected him, same with Carlisle.... Flip just doesn't have that with this group and after three years, its not going to suddenly happen.

Dumars coaching isn't the answer, but a change of coach or change of core players might need to happen.

This was very true last year. I really believe our guys are rolling with Flip this year, if we blow it against Cleveland or Boston Sheed or Flip will be gone.

Daly was asked if he ever wanted to return to coaching and he stated that he was retired and was going to stay that way... but I would love Laimbeer. Laimbeer would demand respect and he would run the team, not be told how the team should be ran by the players.

Rip, Chauncey, Sheed all respect Bill and Rick... having Lamb as the head coach and Mahorn as the assistant... there would be no questions what needed to be done on the court and no issues of motivation... if you don't play up to par, you are benched no matter what name is on the back of your jersey.

Of course, that is why Swin Cash wanted out of Detroit, because Bill benched her for playing like crap in the playoffs.... but the team was better off with Pierson. And Bill got the #4 pick in the draft in return.

I mean I wouldn't be opposed to brining Carlisle back. He was a good, defensive minded coach who our players like and respect. He started this whole run, and was unfairly fired just because we got a chance to get Larry Brown. Who's to say we wouldn't have won the title if we had just kept him?

Carlisle has a good system but is as flexible as a steel rod. He gets outcoached in the playoffs.

I think it goes like this.

The players hated Carlisle, but respected him as a basketball coach.
The players hated Brown, but respected him as a basketball coach.
The players like Saunders, but don't respect him as a basketball coach.
