Why are we going for the summer of 09?

Post#1 » by deNIEd » Thu Feb 21, 2008 9:58 pm

According to Petrie, we are looking to become major players int he free agent market in the summer of 09....but for who?

Obviously we will be looking for either a PG or PF maybe C, so i'm ignoring SG and SF, and only showing bigger names..so not a D. Jones or Eric Snow

Class 09
Player
PG
M. Bibby UFA, R. Felton RA, J. Kidd UFA, A. Iverson UFA, B. Davis UFA,
C. Paul RA, A. Miller UFA, J. Jack RA, Ronnie Price UFA :), D. Williams RA
G. Arenas UFA

PF/C
L. Powe RA, S. May RA
J. Smith UFA, D. Gooden UFA, L. Kleiza RA, J. Maxiell RA, R. Wallace UFA
I. Diogu RA, D. Grannger RA, E. Brand UFA, A. Bynum, RA, L. Odom UFA
H. Warrick RA, S. Marion, UFA, A. Bogut RA, C. Villanueva RA, D. Lee RA
C. Frye RA, C. Wilcox UFA, P. Millsap RA

As of PG's
Bibby, Kidd, AI, Davis, Miller will probably be too old and not worth signing
Paul, Williams won't be let go at all by their teams
Arenas says he will opt out this summer, so won't be a FA then.
leaving
R. Felton, J. Jack

For PF/C
R. Wallace, E. Brand, L. Odom, S. Marion - too old
J. Smith, D. Gooden - little to no use
A. Bynum, A Bogut will be kept by their current teams
Leaving
L. Powe, S. May, L. Kleiza, J. Maxiell, I. Diogu, D. Grannger, H. Warrick, C. Villanueva, D. Lee, C. Frye, C. Wilcox, P. Millsap

Does anyone see any of these players even worth throwing money at or even a true difference maker?

Later today I will post FA for 08 and 10, point being, feeling having money this year will be a bigger deal than in 09

Probably not going to happen to be honest.

It sounds like Petrie may even be thinking about re-signing Ron which would be....just un-Petrie like. Or maybe not. I don't think Petrie wants to finally just bite bullet. It's been 4 years and counting. Fact is, when you are an 11th seed team you don't hand out long term deals to guys hovering around 30 years of age, PERIOD. Not to keep the situaton status quo at least.

I don't get why were going for 09 either, for us, there are only little fitting possible FAs. Only one or two who are significant in name. Also considering the players we'll have, and the next two drafts (PG and/or PF).
The Playoffs don't care about your Analytics

2010
Again, only PG & PF/C
PG
J. Johnson UFA, R. Rondo RA, J. Farmer RA, K. Lowry RA, R. Foye, RA
M. Williams RA, S. Nash UFA, S. Blake UFA, S. Rodriguez RA

PF/C
A. Morrison RA, T. Thomas RA, C. Simmons RA, A. Varejao UFA
M. Camby UFA, A. Johnson UFA, A. Harrington UFA, L. Scola RA,
J. O'Neal UFA, R. Gay FA, D. Milicic UFA, U. Haslem UFA, H. Turkoglu UFA
L. Aldridge RA, K. Thomas UFA, M. Sene FA, A. Bargnai RA, C. Boozer UFA

PG - Nash, Johnson isn't what we need.
Too early to tell whether teams will want to keep their players or not, but
Rondo, Farmer, Lowry, Foye, Williams, Blake, Rodriguez possiblities

PF/C - Camby, Harrington, O'Neal too old
Doubt becomes available - Boozer
Little signs of greatness - Morrison, Simmons, D. Milicic, Sene
A maybe but doubtful - T. Thomas, C. Simmons, A. Varejao, A. Johnson, L. Scolar, A. Bargnai
Would like to sign - L. Aldridge, R. Gay, K. Thomas

No, KT is a throw a max deal at him at all costs, and pray to god he accepts :P

However, I do PRAY to God that Petrie won't use the MLE on crummy players like Moore these coming few years. Imagine if we didn't have the Moore signing, we'd be at 58 mil this year, and if Artest opts out next season, we'd be at 51 mil (+ draft pick)

If Artest does not opt out, next year we are at 65 mil
If Artest does opt out, we are at 58
If Artest opts out, and we resign him at 10 mil, we are at 67 mil

I'll bet my new bought house Petrie throws most or all of the MLE at Beno.

We should go after Brand IMO. If the Kings can clear Brad Miller and Kenny Thomas by then, maybe Salmons or Moore also we could possibly make a run at him. Go with a core of Kmart,Garcia,Artest,Hawes,Brand,Williams,Beno,Douby with the (hopefully) a few lottery pick(s). Brand and Artest will be older than our other core players but every contending team needs veterans and experience.

We all know Brad Miller can fetch expirings+a 1st round pick at the very least. I wonder if teams would take Salmons along with Kenny Thomas for expirings next season.

And probably the rest of the MLE at Ostertag again.

Petrie is too spending happy. He honostly can't NOT use the MLE any year and I guess is alergic to cap space.

Brand is a no.
He will get what, a 5 year 60, 75 mil deal?
He'll be 35-36 by the time his deal runs out.

Brand is a definate no. Sheldon will hopefully meet that sort of mold, meaning Brand would be superfluous
