In order to complete the trade, the Sonics waived Brent Barry to make the necessary roster spots available. Barry was acquired yesterday in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs.

Thanks mate, it would have been great to see Barry suit up ina Sonic's uniform. I guess I'll just have to go back to my DVD collection to see it again.

I'm livid they waived Brent. We could have used his humor and leadership...he's the type of guy I'd love to have around KD.

hoopshype just updated our salary numbers for next year
http://hoopshype.com/salaries/seattle.htm
subtract swift's QO and griffin's salary and add draft picks we should have approximately 8-10 million in capspace.

Hmm, I haven't seen anyone else mention this, but does anyone know how big the trade exception is?

For Seattle: It's pretty straightforward on their end. The Sonics exchanged two halfway-decent players who weren't in their plans (Szczerbiak and West) for players who make less money. This year and next year, they'll save a total of about $10 million.

In the meantime, Seattle GM Sam Presti has another trade exception to play with; the last time he had a big trade exception, he turned it into three first-round draft picks and a half-season of Kurt Thomas. And if he's lucky, a healthy Marshall will shoot the lights out next year and earn him another first-round pick at next year's deadline. Grade: B+

I'm starting to get over the fact that we didn't get Duhon/Simmons, but if he can do something great with the draft, the salary all will be forgiven.

Btw, how big is the TE?

Im not sure why there is so much negativity about this trade. Yes we didnt get the attractive names out of the deal but this was a good trade. Remember we werent going to win more than 25 games to begin with so who cares what the last 30 games are like. Im not for tanking (bad karma) but if losing games due to less talent causes us a better shot at a top 3 pick... so be it. Wally/West had no part of our future and if they stuck around would have only made for a negative locker room due to their unhappiness. And everybody who thinks Wally would bring back so much next year must be forgetting how injury prone he is. Might as well deal him now.

I do like the idea of trying to get Biedrins. Would anybody object to a Wilcox for S&T Biedrins? Wilcox doesnt play D and isnt a PJ/Presti type of player but would be a perfect big man for GS.

Rose/Bayless
SG - to be determined (dime a dozen)
Durant
Green
Biedrins

I think the fact that we got three firsts for taking and then trading Kurt Thomas got our expectations too high. I'd have thought that if KT was worth a first, certainly Wally and West would be. Maybe their value around the league wasn't as great.

Darn, I was hoping for something in the 5-8 million dollar range.

Don't we have around 1 mill left in our other trade exception?

If you're a team who is cutting costs, going into major rebuilding mode (ie. knowing you're going to suck for at least 2-3 years) and trying to ride out a low revenue storm in the meantime, this is a great trade.

From a business angle, it's exactly what I'd do if I were trying to wait out a lease and get a fresh start after moving a team.

It's not the trade itself that bothers me, it's the signals it sends.

This Bulls fan is grateful to the Sonics for helping us complete the trade & helping us jettison Big Ben.

Yeah. That actually is a source of solace for me: that the mind-numbing idiocy of our owner actually relieved a board full of Chicago fans from the misery that was Ben Wallace. I know how painful it was having him on your squad. Hopefully your young bigs will see the time they deserve now.

Yes, we really appreciate it. Itb was a huge mistake getting Ben - the worse mistake that Paxson made (although he could not have anticipated that Ben was going to "retire" after signing that deal).

If we were not able to dump him, our franchise would be a mess for at least another 2 years.

I cant thank Cleve for taking him - since that would be trolling - but I can express gratitude to you guys for making it happen.

Griff is a great guy. His skills are going, but he's a great presence. When he joined the Bulls, the players voted him a co-captain, which took management by surprise. They had no idea how deeply the players respected him.

That's good news about Griffin. We could definitely use a leader in the locker room.

When the Bulls got off to a terrible start, it was Griff who called a players only team meeting & tried to get it resolved. Definitely a positive force in the locker room & Bulls will miss him
