The Brent Barry Movement Thread

Post#1 » by at87on » Fri Feb 22, 2008 6:10 pm

Brent Barry was waived by The Sonics after being traded by the Spurs. Will the NBA try to block Barry from resigning with the Spurs after the 30 day grace period?

Why would they?

Did Barry make comments before the trade even happened that he'd be waived and back in San Antonio in 30 days?

I don't think so.

He'll be free to sign with whoever he wants.

I certainly hope he can re-sign with the Spurs... Once he comes back healthy, The Spurs certainly can use his outside shooting.. Which means Jacque Vaughan would be the odd man out.

I bet he'll sign with the Lakers or Suns. He's probably mad at the Spurs for trading him in the first place.

It's not the league's fault that Stackhouse is dumber than a bag of rocks

It's a rule the league needs to change this offseason though.

Please please let the Warriors claim him off of waivers. Gotta either use cap space, a TPE, or a disabled player exception to do it, and considering that the Dubs don't plan on using the TPE, might as well pick up an expiring contract and deadly shooter.

They won't be able to change the rule for like 3 years though when they do a new collective bargaining agreement.

I don't know if Barry can still run tho. I'd rather have Nellie actually play Marco Belinelli to take those shots.

If he's healthy, I imagine a number of teams will be interested (Denver, perhaps? a big combo guard who can defend a little and shoot the 3 would be a nice fit there).

If he goes back to San Antonio, I imagine there will be some SERIOUS scrutiny by the league. He'd be allowed to under the rules, but I would think after the Stackhouse disaster that league officials are going to have some pretty lengthy interviews with Barry's agent and the Spurs' FO to make sure nothing untoward was arranged beforehand.

His family is in SA. He loves his teammates, and the community loves him. The Spurs have got him 2 rings, and he's a big enough boy to understand that the league is a business.

I seriously doubt he doesn't come back to the Spurs.

yeah he would fit in great with the Lakers:

SF:Odom/Walton/Ariza
PF:Gasol/Radmanovic
C:Bynum/Turiaf
SG:Bryant/Barry/Vujacic
PG:Fisher/Farmar

Mihm and DJ can be IR

If (when) he comes back to SA, then the trade between SA and Seattle would basically be Elson + 1st Rounder for Kurt Thomas...not bad at all!

He will go back to the Spurs and I would bet that it was planned before the trade between, Pop, Barry, Barry's agent and Presti. ( all close)

and this is how you trade a player that you know will get cut and return to the team... you keep your mouth shut.

Barry will be a Spur.

At this point Vujacic fills Barry's role. Dude's been automatic from downtown and plays better defense than Barry.

I'm not sure why the league doesn't just wisen up and prohibit any player traded during the course of the season from rejoining the team he was traded from... Only 30 days is stupid just make it the whole season and the problem is solved (more or less)...

He is going back to Spurs....

His family is there and everyone from the Spurs organization and fans love him. I don't think he wanted to be traded, but was probably garunteed from Sonics that he would be waived and could go back.

I think the difference here was that brent barry wasn't asked by the spurs to be bought out as part of the trade, while nets deal was systematically done so that jerry stackhouse would be bought out instantly so he could rejoin dallas. Spurs just happen to be lucky enough that seattle did another trade before trade deadline so that they can get brent barry earlier. I'm thinking spurs were probably hoping barry would be back by next season if he doesnt get waived... I'm sure there were argreements between barry and spurs so that he would return atleast in the offseason... it just so happens now that brent barry is a free agent since seattle made some moves that filled up their roster space.

Jon Barry should talk him into signing with Denver. He'd probably start there. Like someone else said, he's an inexpensive big guard who can defend a little and shoot 3's. Perfect for Denver and he could definitely get 20+ minutes a night.

it would be a nicer rotation....

Barry/ Iverson/ JR Smith
Melo/ Kleiza

If Barry does re-sign with the Spurs, how many profanity-filled phone calls do you think Stern is going to get from Mark Cuban? 80? 2,000?

There will surely be some kind of investigation if he goes back, if only for the appearance of propriety.
