Waiving vs Buying out

Can some please explain the difference between the two?

If we waive someone and they are then picked up are we not off the hook for their salary and the team that picks him up takes over the contract?

I think when you waive a player, they still get their salary.

When you buy out a player, they still get their salary, but you can come to an agreement on how much they will make that year.

Ex: If a player is making 10 mil and you want to buy him out, you can agree to buy him out for 7 mil and save 3mil.

I don't know if that's true, it's just how I interpret it.

When you waive a player then you still have to pay his contract. Unless he does not clear waivers, in which case a team wanted him on their team.

So Magloire just got Waived, if someone wants to pick him up and pay his current contract they can and the Nets would not have to. If someone does not want to pay it, then the Nets still have to.

Being Bought out is when you want this guy off your roster. Troy Hudson could have gotten waived, but he wouldn't have been picked up by someone. Also in a buy-out you can talk to a Troy Hudson and say "I'll give you a chance to get onto another team where u can get minutes, but you have to take less money than we're supposed to pay you." So maybe we paid Troy Hudson 70 million dollars instead of the 100 million we owed him.

then why didn't we waive juwon howard instead of buying him out?

Crap i already know. His salary was too large for people to want to pick him up. So we bought him out and dallas signed him for cheap. So i guess i answered my own question

I wonder if anyone would want walker if we put him on waivers. MAybe denver or dallas

Walker and Buckner become expirings this summer, so unless we're sure we don't want to trade them and take a stab at free agency, there's really no good reason to get rid of them

Doleac and Buckner might be candidates to be waived. They now have no trade value. All these guys contracts are guaranteed, as of January 10th (I think). If a guy is already paid for, is it better for the team if he's not around? With a chance that a team might pick up a player and pay him for the rest of the season (I could see ORL or DAL doing that with Doleac maybe), should we cut him? Theo's a "no" .. Doleac is a "maybe" to me.

A team has to have cap room or exceptions to pick up a player off of waivers. It's pretty rare for a team to pick somebody up off waivers.

When you buy out a play you're also waiving him. So they're basically the same thing. The only difference is that you'd have to pay the guy less. And that will only happen when he wants out bad enough to give up some money.

I believe for a team to pick someone up off of waivers they also have to have room under the cap to pick up their contract....which is why no one is ever picked up off of waivers.
