He has to be waived by Feb 27 and has to sign be March 1 to be eligible for a playoff roster. Its takes 48 hours to clear waivers.

He doesn't have to sign with a team before March 1, he just has to be bought out before that date. Then he could sign with another team any time until the end of the season and be eligible for their playoff roster.

The March 1st date is not accurate. Sam, or anyone else for that matter, has to be waived by March 1st to be eligible for the postseason. When they sign is apparently not an issue, though I would imagine playoff rosters have to be set at the end of the season.

This was most recently clarified by Henry Abbot on ESPN in relation to Barry rejoining the Spurs in 30 days.

Under NBA rules, players who were active prior to March 1 had to be waived before that date in order to retain their postseason eligibility.

None-the less, this still doesn't change the fact that Sam and L.A. have a little more than a week to come to a buy-out agreement.

As for players who WERE NOT avtive..IE: PJ Brown... They can be signed ANYTIME (including AFTER the season is over), as long as they are signed and added to the playoff roster (13 max, 9 minimum).

The NBA rules say that a playoff team must submit their playoff roster after the regular season, but because it is ambiguous as to an actual date, it allows for a FA who hasn't played all year to potentially be signed and added to a playoff roster. This is why their was all that talk in 06 about Spreewell signing with a team for the playoffs...even though the season was over.

Yes, I heard it! It was the Indiana Pacers main radio station (I believe, as it was out of Indy and its sportstalk). They were talking about the trade and how it will change the division. Larry Bird was on and said that he thinks that it was a good trade for all 3 teams, and that the Cavs should be considered a contender. After Larry was done, a caller asked about the Cavs filling their open spots with possible FA's and the host said that he'd heard that the Cavs were interested in signing Cassell who, was close to an agreement with the Clips for a buyout.

I dont live anywhere near Indy, so I am unfamiliar with the host and how reliable he is, but maybe someone on here is from there and could help out.

As for whether or not the Cavs "should" sign Sam (or anyone else) -assuming he does reach an agreement- I don't know how I feel about it....except for what someone else said: To keep him away from the Celts.

If you guys sign Sam Cassell, you are officially the best team in the East. There is even no need to go on with the season. But I doubt he will do it, even though he can get the starting job. His ties with Garnett are still so close to this day, that he probably won't say no right into KG's face. He has also played with Ray Allen for 4 seasons.

You will be doing perfectly with Gibson and West. West was our starting SG last season, but he is a very good PG, as well. I think he should even start for you guys, and Boobie will come and bring in some hot shooting off the bench.

Are you kidding me? So your telling me where Casell goes Eastern Confrence Title? To say this would make the cavs the best team in the East. No way, Even with Cassell added there not better than Boston, or Detroit. Maybe Orlando but they could be even better with Turkaglu,Lewis,built around with Howard plus role players been chipping like Arroyo and Nelson. Detroit would be still better with Billups and this doesnt make much sense with their latest move of acuiring Delonte West who is looking for a fresh start and minutes and I think cavs fans should give me a chance before bringing Cassell would give u three point guards and obvious controversy on minutes, better fit if he goes with Boston.

Every knows Cassell's best oppurtunity to win a title is with the Boston Celtics, and Cassell really doesn't have start, but he'll get a good amount of playing time almost like starter minutes 20-25 minutes he would make bostons bench lethal.

BTW I think the twolves and Antoine Walker should be discussing a buyout, and he would go to Boston for sure, everyone knows Minnesota doesn't want keep him and where else would he go?? Suns yea right?? Mavs not again? Lakers no minutes? Cavs that wouldn't be too bright?? Spurs doesn't fit with hardworkin on D Spurs? The Cavs were better than Boston BEFORE the trade... regardless of what the records say. They do not match up with us and theyre not deep enough.

If the C's add Cassell and he's healthy and in form... that makes it a toss up in a 7 gamer against us. I agree, that would make their bench lethal.

normally a buy out would be very expensive and unlikely for him..

even if he is unhappy with no playing time..

I've thought for a long time that Sam Cassell would be great for this team. He's playoff proven and he's not afraid to get on Lebron, kick him in the butt when he needs it. Although now with West and with Boobie healthy I don't see where he'd fit, other than moving Boobie to the 2 and chaining a healthy Sasha to the bench.

Walker and Pierce are close friends. They hang out in the offseason. We sent Walker away for nothing because he was a UFA and we helped him get more money in a S&T.
