If I hear "a real gutty performance tonight" again I will shoot myself. It's only a matter of time before he says "the guys really fought their guts out."

I've always been partial to "young rookie". Also, any player is a "first (or second or third or whatever) star from (Georgia or whatever their college might be). Finally, it is grating when talking about statistics he says, "Player X is 35-79 from the 3 point line on the season". Why can't he just say "this season"?

The penalty is two shots dumb@ss. If there wasn't a penalty, you'd take the ball out on the side if its a non-shooting foul.
One plus the penalty is a particularly onerous one.
Another thing he does is say that everything is a "jumper". Someone is four feet from the basket jumps in the air and shoots and Buck calls that a "jumper" or "jump shot". I don't consider anything inside the paint a jumper. It may be a floater, or a power move or something else, but a "jumper", no, unless you want to call it a pointblank "jumper".

Wow. The crowd is turning on Buck. They must be frustrated.
He is technically right on all those calls.
It is one plus the penalty but he could say team X is in the penalty. Player X was fouled while shooting so he is going to the line for two.
It is a jump shot if you jump and shoot it. This is verse a set shot which is what everyone used to do. A floater is different. A floater happens when you are on the ground and do a quick release while moving AKA AJ.

Actually, no. It's an old school relic.
The explanation I heard (from Buck, on radio) is that the NBA rules used to only give 1 shot for a foul. But they would give the foul on non-shooting fouls as well. Since in many cases this gives incentive for a player to foul --might as well slam somebody for a % chance at 1pt rather than give up the definite two pts-- the game bogged down. The NBA altered the rule to discourage mass fouling, speed up play. Once a team had used up its quota of one-pt fouls they would get 'one plus the penalty' and the opponents would get to shoot two foul shots.
Buck holds onto it because it's a quaint and folksy sorta cute way of paying respects to the old-timey announcers of the game. That's the way he heard it on the radio growing up, so he sticks with it.

Hands, you are very forgiving. When you've heard good play by play guys and then you hear Buck, the difference is clear. He's a nice guy, he's our guy, but that's where it ends. You don't have to say "jumper". You can say, He "shoots inside", shoots "near the basket", but to say "he takes a jumper" from four feet is just stupid.

Dave Johnson on radio PBP is kick ass. And Glenn Consor has grown on me. When the audio and video are near synched I'll turn off the tv sound and let DJ tell it. Plus they blog heavily in-game and respond on air to questions. And will use blogger's questions in pre- and post-game interviews. With attribution.

I've grown to enjoy Buckhantz (and Chenier) and his little quirks. The guy's a lifelong Bullets fan - you can just tell. If you take a gander @ other teams' game threads vs. us, it's not too uncommon to see people praising our broadcasting team.
Anyways, re: Buckhantz... I love it when he says "well how do you like that!" after some crazy shot.

Your close. One plus the penalty wasn't 2 shots. It was only 2 shots if you made the first one ( for non shooting fouls when you were in the penalty). At least that is the way I remember it. I would have to read up on this again. It has been a while. I have some old game tapes I could watch.
They also used to also call and "one and one"
So the change was that now you could miss the first and you still get the second.
So shooting fouls are always 2 shots ( except if fouled shooting a 3 ) and non shooting fouls while in the penalty went from one and one ( 2 shots if you make the first) to 2 shots ( aka one plus the penalty )
But your right about the rest. I think. This goes back to the DET rough neck ball.
Just think about how the end of the games would play out today if when you fouled down the stretch like they do now, if they missed on the first it was a live ball. Talk about hack a Shaq. It was way more important that you had players who could shoot free throws.
So the big difference was you had to make the first shot to get any points on a non shooting foul while in the penalty. Now you are guarantied 2 shots to at least get 1 point out of it.
As a side note. I think they also changed how many fouls you could give from 5 to 6. Not sure if they changed the team foul number also. The NBA didn't want it's big players on the bench because they fouled out.

I love Buck. He's better than most announcers. Phil Chenier is pretty boring though. He rarely offers any valuable insight. It's frustrating because he is a former player and he seems like a pretty bright guy so I'm sure he knows the game well. I guess he just thinks the casual fan wouldn't be interested in the nuances of offensive and defensive rotations.
