Is this the best Laker team since showtime?

Post#1 » by Kreuk » Sun Feb 24, 2008 7:15 am

This team is on a rampage and Bynum's not even playing... Look at our starting 5 (when Bynum comes back)...

PF - Gasol
SF - Odom
C - Bynum
SG - Kobe
PG - Fisher

and our bench...

Luke
Vlad
Farmar
Sasha
Turiaf
Mihm
Ariza
Mbenga

The present team and bench absolutely destroys (on paper) the teams that won the three-peat... Now, I know we haven't won sh^t, but looking at the present play of this team anything is possible - even this season.

Look at our 99-00 team that won the championship..

Shaq
Kobe
Horry
rice
Fox
Fisher
harper
green
shaw
george
knight
salley
lue
celestand
jacobson

besides shaq and kobe, that team was pretty much a team of has-beens, journeymen, and scrubs...

the 00-01 team wasnt much better, though we KILLED in the playoffs.

I think with this team we are poised for another dynasty in Lakerland and it may be our best team since the showtime lakers.

The question is valid and the OP was not claiming anything more than a comparison. The proof is in the rings.. ( *cough before you speak of rings*)

he is talking about rhe balance of the team.

I really can't say, as of now we have a powerful team. That team also went 67-15 as well. I think we would have trouble guarding Shaq in that form tho. Shaq in that form was damn near unstoppable. I would say these Lakers in 7 games

The teams are stacked now, it will be virtually impossible for any team to win 3 championships in a row nowadays

You make a valid point. I think we have the best 1st,2nd,3rd,4th option. Back in the day we had Kobe and Shaq and the others. Now, you dont know who is going to step up. This team is so deep a couple of our players dont get as much time as they should. Players like Turiaf and Farmar. This team has the potential to win at least 3 championships out of the next 5 years. If the cards fall in the right place i think this team can win more championships than the team in the 80's. In years to come hopefully Kobe can win some rings being the leader then turn the team over to Bynum and help Bynum get his rings. The transition from Shaq to Kobe never happened. Hopefully Kobe doesnt make the same mistakes...and he lets Bynum run the show in about 4 yrs. With the league CBA agreement and the Salaries of today, its almost impossible to get a team more stacked then this.

No, when I see rings then we can argue this point. I know the Lakers are in first but......

I think Bynum's going to be on the bench unless there's a match up like the Suns where he'll face up with Shaq and Pau's on Amare.

As far as me liking this team better than the Shaq-Kobe Lakers, I think I do. Having the one two punch of Kobe and Gasol and Bynum as the scrappy kid coming into his own with LO doing the dirty work is fun basketball to watch. This team runs more and plays defense.

As far as which team is better, we'll have to take a wait and see because that's only fair if you want to compare. So far this new team hasn't done anything except win a few games. So that makes my decision easy so far because the Shaq-Kobe team would be better.

Until this new team faces stiff competition and win against teams like the Celtics, dominate in the playoffs and win a ring, then it would be better to make a decision.

Well the top 5 teams in the NBA are much more stacked than 10 years ago or 8 years ago. That's incuding the Lakers. The players back than were more spread out than now.

The 3peat Lakers sweeped a pretty darn good 7 foot duo in David Robinson and Tim Duncan as well. Robinson was still putting up 14.4 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks at that point. Obviously that Spurs team didn't have anyone as talented as Kobe on the perimeter, so it's impossible to say how it would've gone against this edition of the Lakers.

Having said that I'm going to vote no until we prove something in the playoffs.

if Crittenton would still be with the Lakers we wouldn't even need to play in the playoffs or the finals. Stern would of have to just hand out the next 3 championship trophys last week at the All Star game out of respect.
