Offseason.

Post#1 » by BeesWax » Mon Feb 25, 2008 6:43 pm

Assuming we don't make the playoffs, finish about where we are overall now, and the lottery isn't kind we would pick around 7. Looking at what might be available to us I think we need to move that pick. What do you think we could get with the pick and some players. I can't see anyone worth drafting for us but there will be some decent wings available in the draft this year. What team needs a 2 or 3 and might want to move up or trade a solid 4 for our pick and some reserves.

2 or 3?

Jason Richardson 2 or 3
Gerald Wallace 3 (or 4)
Matt Carroll 2 or 3
Adam Morrison (2 or) 3
Jared Dudley 3

excluding
Jeff McInnis 1 or 2
Derek Anderon 2 or 3
and even
Ray Felton 1 (or undersized 2)

guys in bold font are under contract next year.
For me SG/SF is not our problem.

We need tall PF and PG - well better say floor general in SG body (I agree with Fatlever on this one (check the trainwreck season thread)).

If you are trying to say we need a lockdown defender for SG position I would agree. In ideal way we would get defensive oriented pass first SG (to play 1 at offense and 2 on defense).Roy would be ideal, what a shame.

I am saying we have 2 and 3 but need a 4. There are not any good 4s or 1s, past Rose, in this draft. I am saying what team will trade for our pick and maybe give up a young 4 and later pick or a solid veteran 4 or 1.

PG's:
Augustin
Bayless
Collison
Lowry
Westbrook
Weaver
Mayo (?)

PF/C's:
Hibbert
Lopez
Thabeet
Jordan
Arthur
Love
Anderson
Ogilvy
Ibaka
Hardin

and that doesn't even take into account guys like Griffin, Koufos, Hill, Price and Hansborough.

I am not saying there are not ones in thr draft, just not anything worth drafting. Hibbert has shown how slow he is and none of those points look to be a step up from Felton. I think Lopez will be gone before 7 and thew others are not worth 7 money for our team. We need a perimeter 4 that is athletic and Authur is the only one close to that. Collison, Augustin and Mayo would be a step down at point. Mayo at the 2 with J-Rich at the 3 and wallace at the 4 maybe nice. But I would rather find a new 4 to save wallace the wear and tear. We have two centers on the roster now that can play EO and Nazr we need a 4. Hans would be ok but not until the mid twenties and I am not sure fans want another UNC player on the team. I say pair the pick and May and see if we can get a starting 4 and late round pick. With the late pick take one of the 1s off your list as a back-up, maybe collison he would be a nice 2nd string point.

Yeah, jdm3 is right, Hibbert, Lopez, Thabeet, and Jordan are all true centers, and I think Emeka is going to be playing C for us in the future, not PF.

The problem is, if we take a PG, he must be a pass-first PG. Bayless or Mayo or Westbrook do not fill a need for us. DJ Augustin would, and I think he is the best player we can draft who would not be an amazing pickup (like Beasley or Rose). There is Anthony Randolph, who is a PF that's supposedly super-athletic and can shoot a little, which is pretty much exactly what I want. I have not seen him play, however.

The rest of the draft is in too much flux... a guy like Darrell Arthur could make sense, another athletic big guy, but he's been disappointing at Kansas. I think definitive favorites, beyond the two already mentioned, are going to have to wait until closer to the draft.

Amazingly, right now we're on pace for more lottery balls than last year, so what the hell, maybe Beasley isn't a hopeless dream.

Not kidding at all. Augustin is small and can't shoot any better than Felton can. He is faster but I don't see an upgrade there. Collison could not create his way out of a paper bag. I have watched him because people keep touting him as a good PG. He is at best going to be a solid back-up or spot starter in the league. Mayo just isn't a PG. He is a good player but an almost 1 to 1 assist to turnover ration in college does not project well to the pros as a pg.

First thing first we should talk about No.6 pick not No.7 (right now).

I don't think Westbrook would be a bad fit. I'm not sure we are looking for Felton carbon copy to compete with him and to overcome the UNC bias. We wopuld do much better bringing a different type of backcourt player. The one who could play alongside Raymond or solo without him at pg. We could do well with a combo guard type, just not the usual one but the one with SG-esque body and bit of a PG play. Based on his nbadraft.net profile Westbrook should be put into consideration. (trade down from No.6, I don't want to reach too much)

From these I think Rose and Westbrook would fit perfectly.
Bayless would bench Felton.
Augustin or Collison would be a possible replacement of Felton, I wouldn't say an upgrade.
I just couldn't find any Lowry in any mocks.
Weaver should be considered even if he slip to second round (we don't have any late first).
I don't like Mayo I wouldrather draft best big man available or BPA.

i would take them in this order:
Rose
Bayless
Westbrook
Collison/Augustin
the rest

I agree on Rose. He could bench or play beside Felton. Bayless would be nice also. Those two will most likely be gone before 6 or 7. The rest are not really upgrades more like a lateral move. Lowry would be good if you are talking from Memphis in a trade. I do not know what it would take to get him though. We need to get a starter in the 1st this year to make an improvement. I don't see anyone at 6 that will be an instant upgrade.
