The Los Angeles Lakers have played only one home game since acquiring Pau Gasol -- and zero games in that span with Andrew Bynum -- but are a scorching 9-1 with their new Spaniard. So we humbly retract last week's suggestion that Kobe Bryant's mangled pinkie demanded a drop to No. 5 and duly lift the Lakers into the top spot of ESPN.com's weekly NBA Power Rankings for the first time since late in the 2003-04 season ... Kobe and Shaquille O'Neal's last season together as teammates.
i couldve sworn they were number 1 earlier this year?

I believe that was the SI poll. I don't recall seeing them #1 on NBA.com or ESPN.com rankings. Those polls have been dominated by Boston/Detroit, for the most part.

Since LeBron returned from the injury in December, the Cavs are 23-12 and the Magic 19-17...
[waiting to hear usual "omg but we are two games ahead of them!"]
The rankings are not since December, but for week 17. The Magic went 3-1 in beating down the Pistons at their home court and like you said, we still have the better record, so better week, better record. Why the Cavs?

That doesn't make any sense, the Celtics currently lost 3 in a row but that doesn't make them bottomfeeders for this week's rankings. The rankings definitely took in account more than one week. Plus if I recall correctly the Cavs beat the Magic two weeks ago.

Well, we play the Cavs twice pretty soon. Should be fun to see who the third best team in the conference is.
I could see where the Cavs are top 10, but to me the Magic deserve it just as much, yet they never make it. I've seen Toronto and Cleveland ahead of us on every ranking despite us beating Boston, Detroit, losing to Toronto and then whipping the Kings and Sixers

NBA.com's rankings:
I don't see how the Magic go 3-1 on the week, and drop two spots. I don't mind Cleveland being over them really, but c'mon.
CzBron, that's a pretty lame argument. You're taking a span of 35 games, nearly half the season. The Magic are 12-5 in the last 17 games. Meanwhile, the Cavs are 11-6.

I guess it is debateble who goes in front of whom between Magic and Cavs. But I don't see how either one can squeeze in top 10 right now. So it is 11-14, no big difference.
I'd put Rockets around #5 for now. Definitely not #1.

Come on, it's not like you're 10 spots behind the Cavs, you are actually right behind the Cavs in two of those rankings and it's not like you're playing without 3 very important players and upgraded your roster via trade.
