is Gasol + Bynum a good fit?

Post#1 » by pl » Mon Feb 25, 2008 6:32 pm

Hi guys!
I'm a big Gasol fan, and for that reason now a bandwagon Laker fan :).
I wached most of the games since the trade, and even I'm surprised how good Pau is, when used primarily in the low post.

I really don't want him to go back to the high post, but with the return of Bynum, that will be inevitable.

Pau is a pretty good midrange shooter, but he is far from automatic. I think hhe could keep up this 65% field goal percentage for the rest of the season if he would be used the same way as he is now. But I'm affraid it will go way back down, if he is sent out to the top of the key.

Since Bynum can't shoot it either, I'm affraid theese twin towers would not fit each other very well.

Of course there are positive parts of the idea too, because with the frontcourt of Bynum Pau and Lamar, the opponents will have absolutely zero second chances.
And on the offensive side, the shooters will have even more room to operate.

But as far as the fluenceof the offense and the fast pace goes, I think this duo starting together is a bad idea.
Bad for the team, and bad for Gasol too.

What do you guys think?

I think they will fit just fine. They just need some time to click, and all will be well. We basically have 2 guys who we can run the pick and roll with, so we become that much more dangerous. Where we improve the most, however, is on the defensive end, and that's far more important than how our offense runs (which is going to be good no matter how you look at it).

Bynum will probably come off the bench and Phil will slowly put him and Pau in at the same time so that when the playoffs come, we can start Bynum at center. I don't expect Bynum to give more than 12 PPG, but I do expect him to absolutely mop up around the glass. I don't know how well it's going to work for us this season, but next season they are going to be scary while on the floor at the same time.

I think everyone is in the same position we can all make assumptions but no one really knows until it happens. My guess would be that the lakers would become unstoppable.

I think it could work. Pau is an impressive passer and I think he can definitely rack up some assists on the flashes in the paint from Bynum operating from the high post. The only thing that will hurt with both of them in the line up is 3 point shooting. With Lamar going back to the 3 he's not a consistent 3 point maker. But I'll take length and better defensive rebounding over 3 pointers. Plus Fish will be even more open then he has been. And Kobe's got the range.

Plus I think specialists like 3 point shooters can be brought of the bench anyway.

we were outrebounded by the phoenix suns. it is a must that he return. just think what will happen when houston or san antonio come to town. the other facets of the game are fine. but interior strength, will be our weakness. it was one of kwames strengths. maybe the only strength this guy had. but on the inside, quality teams will exploit that. its what they do in the league. find that area, and pound it.

teams will not fastbreak us. they will not attack the perimeter. they will attempt to slow it down, and pound the interior. its the only weakness that ive seen from what has been several blowouts thus far.

its just going to take a little time to adjust

they look good on paper. I'd settle with pau not being automatic from mid range anyways. For several reasons.

1. Kobe, bynum, and Gasol would draw double teams, and the starting 5 are all good unselfish passers. defenses would not be able to scramble and recover quickly enough so Gasol would have more open jumpers than he's had w/ the grizz.

2. Bynum Gasol and Odom would clean the boards.

3. Bynum is a better defender @ center than Gasol.

It won't be a problem, in my opinion. They are both very capable of playing out of the high post and both are excellent passers and finishers.

Bynum with his back to the basket can post up in the pinch post and pass it to Pau, Kobe, Fish, Odom out of the double team. If single teamed, he will easily make it to the hoop for the dunk or jump hook. And, of course Bynum is a great option under the basket for Gasol to pass it to should he be the one that sets up away from the basket (more likely).

The point being, they can both post up inside or fifteen feet away, it doesn't matter. How are teams going to defend them?

I can't wait for Bynum to come back. I want to see how this lineup would be already with him pau and lamar crashing the boards. It seems like Bynum's been out forever doens't it?

Prior to his injury Bynum had one of the best FG% in the league. He finishes around the basket. Bynum and Gasol will fit just fine together.

To work you need one of the big men to be versitle. If Gasol isn't who is? Its a little bit of a redicoulus concern.

We got to see first, but the way Kobe is feeding the ball down low I don't see any problems

Pau has still done most of his operating in the high post. He may be getting to the basket alot, but that won't change with Andrew. Also if his % goes down a bit you'll have to realize that Drew was tops in the league in percentage. I think it's a great fit. I think you worry about Pau's stats too much.

I just think when they are on the court together that we will be unstoppable on the prick and roll.

It'll be awesome...as Gasol begins to decline (in about 5-6 years or so), Bynum will be quickly reaching his prime along with Jordan Farmar and that other X-Player that we've acquired by then. The future is bright! :D

i really think gasol+bynum will be the next best thing to unstoppable.

gasol's jumper isnt bad at all...he'll make it 7-10 times around the high post area..and always expect odom and bynum to crash boards (odom a bit less since hes moving to SF)

bynum is a defensive anchor. and on offense, hes money when hes in the post...pretty much anywhere.

odom will put up the most consistent double-doubles of the 3 (gasol, bynum odom)

kobe will be kobe

fisher/farmar/radman/luke/turiaf/farmar/ariza/sasha/etc will fill in their roles like theyre suppose to....

I think it would work. Bynum would set up shop down low and Pau can play at the high post and spot up. If the defender recovers, Pau can take him off the dribble (with Drew clearing the lane, assuming he does that) for a layup/dunk or hit others with a pass.

I'm telling you guys, this is the perfect place for Pau. If he landed on Chicago or some other team they'll only get angry because they expect him to be a tough elite low post magical franchise cornerstone. In L.A. he could just play like another piece (a great piece) to a system that suits him to the letter.
