Im happy either way. I honestly think we will get a lottery pick no matter what. We lose, our pick goes lottery. We win, either RJ or VC played good enough that Thorn will be able to trade for one (which I can guarantee he will if he likes someone in the draft). Considering the amount of flexibility and assets we already have, with Rod Thorn at the helm I honestly believe there is almost no way we can lose.

Let's miss it, get a lottery pick, and start rebuilding.

"start" rebuilding? We're in the process of it...or a "retooling" as i like to call it. Regardless of whatever pick we get, we'll be fine. Sometimes the best players aren't the projected lottery picks!

We already have too much wins to be a top seed in the lottery . A low playoff seed or barely missing the playoffs isn't much difference .
At least our young players can get some quality playoff expirience if we make the playoffs and that never hurts .

I'd rather make the playoffs. Mainly because I want Marcus to get legitimate playing time in the postseason, if he's truly a keeper which I believe he is* then this is something that he can really benefit from.
The same thing goes with Boone and Sean.
*I think the Nets are probably going to split the time at the point between Marcus and Harris similar to what Toronto does with Calderon and Ford.

Currently, we're 25-31, in the 7th seed, half a game up on Philly in the 8th spot, followed by Atlanta a game and a half back in the 9th spot.
The way the draft works is that the non-playoff teams get lottery picks, and the playoff teams go in order of lowest record to highest record. Currently, we're the 16th pick in the draft on that standard.
However, if we dropped out of the playoffs, everything changes.
Say we go 8-18 with the 26 games remaining, a winning percentage at a slightly lower tick than we're at now, from 45% to 40%. Currently, a 40% winning percentage from a team who missed the playoffs would place us around the 9th/10th picks.
That's a huge difference in terms of the player we'd get.
Consider the 2005 draft. We drafted 15th, and selected Antoine Wright.
LA drafted 10th, and selected Andrew Bynum. GS drafted 9th, selecting Ike Diogu.
Or the 2004 draft, where Andre Igodola was the 9th pick, and the 16th pick was Kirk Snyder.
Or the 2002 draft, where Amare and Caron Butler went 9-10, and Boki Nachbar and Jiri Welsch went 15-16.
That difference in talent is enough to convince me that we should be rooting for the Nets to fall out of the race.
What group of those players would we rather have on the team?
Bynum-Diogu-AI-Amare-Butler, or Wright-Snyder,Nachbar,Welsch?

We need them to get experience in meaningful games .
True.
But that experience shouldn't come at the cost of adding talent.
I'd rather have them miss the playoffs a year or two, then come back in 2010 with 2 lottery picks on the squad and really make a dent in the playoffs.
That'll be playoff experience. 1 and done, and a sweep by Detroit, isn't really playoff experience in my book.

This team is rebuilding on the fly. We will make the playoffs. We have young bigs, young PG, young guards, old and experienced, star wing-men. What do we need from the draft? We need rotation guys and a shooter. 10th pick or 16th pick .. getting a star player from there is a long-shot and scouting and lots of luck.
I'm glad Kidd went out this way. It's better for him and us. What would have happened if Kidd got his extension? It would be Nets business as usual. We keep treading water at the bottom of the LEastern conference playoff teams. This team wasn't going anywhere with Kidd. And then what happens when Kidd retires or goes ring hunting in 2 or 3 years, just in time for Brooklyn move? Think of what happened to the Bulls when Jordan retired and what happened to the Knicks when Ewing retired. Sixers and Iverson.
The team ends up in the same ugly place before Kidd joined the Nets.
Trading Kidd now is like cashing out a good investment to lock in your gains. We couldn't have gotten more (what did you think Kidd was suppose to get us? A Chris Paul?), and we got much more than we started with -- Marbury. Consider Kidd leaves behind Harris, VC, 2 Dallas picks, salary relief, and some nice bench pieces, if we can keep them.

No arguments with the Kidd trade at all, I like our return on that as well.
Making that trade, however, means that we're not really in win-now anymore, and that further moves should be made with a similar eye towards the future.
We still have the same problems that we had while Kidd was here, in that we have stars at redundant positions with games that don't seem to complement each other.
What's this team's ceiling, with everything going right?
Is it a 2nd round loss?
And if that's what it is, why are we happy with the state of the team? Isn't it better to lose for a couple of seasons with a stronger team at the end of the tunnel?
It's interesting that you bring up the AI situation. If anything, that's the team I'd point to as a reason why we shouldn't be shooting for the playoffs this year.
Just like us, that team has enough talent as presently constitued to make the playoffs and get swept in a round or two. Wouldn't they have been better off trading a Miller or a Dalembert for cap relief/picks and rebuilding?
I just don't see the point to making the playoffs and getting swept by the Pistons.

Williams, Krstic, Diop, Boone, Swift..... and NACHBAR is the best power forward option?
Do not question the Frank. Did you see Bokie's 4 points last game? He's an absolute terror as were his 2 late garbage point free throws...another Dirk waiting to happen
His logic was probably like this..."Troy Murphy can shoot the three. Bokie being more mobile, can guard it better." Which is idiotic because if you are putting Bokie in the game for defensive purposes, you are a confused human being. He obviously also didnt think much of Sean stuffing dirk's shot last time they played.

I heard that Jason Collins dropped 30 on Nachbar once.

But I guess he who chokes women is ok to have on the team?
He who chokes out drunken MEN who run their mouths into unconsciousness is quite okay to have on this team because he wants to be here and he shows up every night!!
