Roy out for LA trip; New Probable Lineup...

Post#1 » by Spykes » Mon Feb 25, 2008 10:46 pm

Quick updated his blog with the latest news. Long story short, Roy is staying home for the LA road trip and because of this, Nate is thinking of going with a bigger starting lineup...

Blake
Webster
Outlaw
Aldridge
Przybilla

Here's the full post...

Trail Blazers guard Brandon Roy said he will miss at least the next two games because of a sprained right ankle, prompting coach Nate McMillan to shuffle his starting lineup for Tuesday's game at the Lakers and Wednesday's contest at the Clippers.

McMillan said his probable starting lineup for the Lakers game will be Steve Blake at point guard, Martell Webster at shooting guard, Travis Outlaw at small forward, LaMarcus Aldridge at power forward and Joel Przybilla at center.

It would be the first start of the season for Outlaw, who is averaging 13.5 points.

"This will be an opportunity for some guys,'' McMillan said.

Roy will not accompany the team today to Los Angeles in order to receive treatment and rest in Portland. Roy was pulled in the third quarter from Sunday's 112-102 loss to Boston after playing 26 minutes, during which he alternated between limping and coasting.

A magnetic resonance imaging revealed only an ankle sprain, which Roy said he suffered in the Feb. 13 game at Dallas, when DeSagana Diop fell on his right leg.

The team said it will evaluate Roy on Thursday and determine if he can play in Friday's home game against the Lakers. Roy on Monday said he is aiming to play on Friday, although McMillan termed his status as "day-to-day".

"This will be the best rest I've had in a while,'' Roy said. "Hopefully it works and I'll be able to come back as strong as possible. Coach said I will never be 100 percent, but if I can come back at 90 percent, then hopefully I'll be able to finish the rest of the season as strong as possible.''

Roy said the ankle gives him trouble when he jumps and when he drives left.

"Anything where I have to use some athleticism or I have to push off it,'' Roy said. "And (against Boston) I found myself trying to shoot off my left leg, and that's not too smart.''

This will be the first games Roy has missed due to injury this season. He sat out two games earlier this month to attend a family funeral.

I'll be interested to see how Outlaw does in a starting role at SF...

Hmm, I don't know if I like the idea of starting Outlaw because he's been so great off the bench but they need some kind of scoring punch so I don't blame McMillan. It should be interesting to see if TO can play well starting.

Thank you Nate. I was just thinking this is a line up he should try if Roy wasn't able to make the trip. We really need to see what Outlaw can do playing extended minutes at the 3.

It does leave us thin at the bench, but I like the idea of putting your 5 best players out there. This also might be the opportunity Frye needs to establish himself as the scorer off the bench.

Anyword on whether Jones is returning? I heard conflicting reports last week. One said he would be out another 3 weeks following the ASG, another saying he'd be back in a week or so.

I've been one of the more vocal people in the "Travis is a Power Forward" camp. So much so that I really think we should trade him before he gets pushed out of the rotation by Oden next season and his value plummets.

I'll be glued to my TV for the first period of these next two games. I'm so excited to see Travis play extended minutes at the 3 I may need to borrow somebody's shorts holding apparatus.

Does THIS mean Miles will play? I've been itching for him to score like 50 points so we can trade him to NY on draft day.

It's going to be tough playing the Lakers twice without Roy, but every game with them is a fight to the end.

Thanks for the update Spykes.
Does anyone know when J.Jones is supposed to be back? He'd be a better starter than Outlaw, IMO. He and Webster and Blake would go crazy for 3's which would leave the inside open for Przybilla & Aldridge.

Silver lining time.

Like many have said, it's important to determine if Outlaw can play SF. If he can, then he's migrating to the 'untouchable' list.

It's also important to finally determine if martell has the cajones to take advantage of an opportunity, and come to the aid of his team when it needs him most.

My guess is that travis will pass and martell will fail. I hope I'm wrong in the latter case.

I would like to see LMA play well with some defense focused on him.

Portland could be in trouble if Kobe is able to draw fouls. Martell and Travis could end up in foul trouble and what do the Blazers do then, stick a tiny PG on him? Man, he'll take em down low and score in bunches. I'll bet Kobe goes for 40+ tonight. Yikes!

Remember a few seasons ago when Kobe had a stretch of 5 or so 40+ point games? Blakey the streak killer guarded him most of the night, held him to 35 points and the Blazers won.

I'm not happy to see Roy out (glad its minor!) but I am happy that it FORCES Nate to try some different things. It seems that even with this young team he is "GLACIAL" in trying different lineups and giving some players more playin time!

it's not surprising to see that some Laker fan's propensity for immature trash-talk and arrogance hasn't changed

I would like to see LMA step up, carry the scoring load, and create opportunities for his teammates. I'll be happy if the Blazers can somehow keep the game competitive but it would be a nice bonus if LMA could look like he might someday be the man.
