Free Agents...Waived/Bought out players

Post#1 » by jlove_26 » Tue Feb 26, 2008 12:49 am

Here's a list of Free Agents and Waived/Bought out players that would do well here, for more than just a 10-day contract:

Waived/Bought Out:
SG/SF Brent Barry (decision coming today or tomorrow)
SF/PF Antoine Walker (likely to be bought out)
PG/SG Flip Murray
PG/SG Sam Cassell (likely to be bought out)

Free Agents:
SG/SF Doug Christie
SG/SF Rueben Patterson
PG/SG Randy Livingston (Currently in NBDL)
SG/SF Dermarr Johnson (Suns Experience)
SG/SF Tarence Kinsey

Flip Murray is a good player, but not what we need. Cassell will go to Boston if he's bought out, no doubt about that. It's gotta be Bones or bust, but I don't think Walker would be a bad pickup.

Barry
Cassell

Patterson

Pass on the rest...I think there's 2 others that may be bought out that might be ok for the min, Donyell Marshall and Adrian Griffin...

I don't know if Seattle will buy out or release any more players. They might since they have 15 players under contract, and minimum they have to have 13. Last night they only had 12 suit up last night. Swift, Sene, and Marshall didn't suit up. Griffin did, but he only played 3:29 minutes. If either/both were waived/bought out I'd prefer Marshall over Griffin, due to the fact that his defense is just as good, can actually play the 3/4 in the Suns system, and can shoot the 3 will good percentage. He'd be a good backup if he's bought out and Barry signs elsewhere (I don't think he'll resign with the Spurs becuase he's supposedly telling his intentions tonight or tomorrow--he's have to wait 30 days before he could re-sign there).

^Wait you think Marshall at his age can play shooting guard?

yikes

He's strictly a decent body (size-wise, ZERO athleticism nowadays) and he can do Jajo's job in terms of sitting in the corner taking 3s

Griffin could play the 2/3 and defend whilst providing leadership and toughness...though I could see him going back to DAL

Does anyone know anything about Adam Haluska's defense? He seems as though he has a good stroke, especially playing decent minutes with an All-NBA PG. e hasn't seen any time during the regular season with New Orleans and I thought I heard that Houston (who got him in the Bobby Jackson trade) was going to release him.

Banks? Fizer? Haislip? Camby (he's not a free agent or going to be waived/bought out)?

Vinicius maybe? The word on him is he's a good shooter and all around offensive player, but no defense. If we're only looking for a shooter and have given up on the defensive wing (ie. Quinton Ross) he wouldn't be a bad pickup.

But right now we're not looking for a 10-day guy to just sit on the bench. We need someone that will actually contribute. Barry is really the only option.

Someone tell me again why Sam would be a bad idea for us?

He would be perfect here. However, there's no guarantee that he's gonna be waived/bought out, but if he does, the word out there is he'll sign with Boston. If he is waived/bought out, then I'd love for him to come here to help spread the floor, and be a killer assassin in the 4th quarter like he's been for years.

^^ I thought Sam was interested in joining a title contender? C's are not going to get past the Pistons. Lakers have no room for him. SUNS is the only team that really can use him for a title shot.

^Are you serious?

Cassell and KG are tight, I believe Cassell played with Allen in MIL too..plus Rondo is their only decent PG.

He's going to BOS unless they don't want him/he's not released

Cassel was a sun a long time ago.

I personally would like to see the suns get both Cassel and Barry. We need them both. Let tuck stay in the D-league and bring DJ back and forth between the D and as a bench player.

That's a nice thought, but a) Sarver won't pay that much and b) Mike won't play them enough because he doesn't want to take any minutes from the top 7 guys.

And there's no question that Sam-I-Am will go to the Celtics if he's bought out. He already said he wants to go there and the undoubtedly need a guy like him.

hmmmm ESPN says this morning that Cassell claims he was misquoted in desiring to go the Boston. So who knows?

Ainge was on the radio after the trade deadline saying things like "when we do bring in a backup PG, Rondo will still be the starter. Still, there will be some big minutes there..."

Given he was talking after the deadline, he couldn't have had too many options for PGs that would deserve big minutes on the Celts. I think he may have had an inclination Cassell was coming their way.

Globe reporting his buyout is imminent. Globe is also reporting from "sources" that they are out of the Barry sweepstakes.

I wouldn't rule out SUNS training staff and light practices as a BIG inducement for these vets.

EDIT: I just read that the Celtics have no mid-level. Mavs do, but Sam will cost them double being over the tax limit. Suns very well could be the #1 contender.

What could the Suns offer for Cassell? Assuming the rumors are true and the Suns do get Barry, what is left to give to Cassell for him to even consider coming here?

Cassell will get 25-30 MPG with Boston. Unless Mike D wants to cut Barbs' minutes by 5-10 MPG, there's no way Sam gets more than 15-20 minutes here. And I think we all know the odds of Mike D cutting Barbs' minutes.
