I haven't really seen a whole lot of Frazier admittingly, but he had really quick hands and got a lot of steals. My list looks exactly like yours, Kidd, Frazier, Payton, then Stockton.

Kidd's size combined with his defensive tenacity made him one of the most versatile defenders ever, remember how he locked down Paul Pierce in the playoffs? He always guarded the best guard against the opposing team, whether it was pg or sg.

From everything I've heard about him, Walt Frazier.

He's probably one of the most underrated players in NBA history.

In a 7 game series that featured Jerry West, Wilt Chamberlain, Willis Reed, Bill Bradley, Dave DeBusschere, Elgin Baylor.... Walt Frazier was the key player in the deciding game, with something insane like 37 points and 15 assists, if I recall.

In that playoffs alone, he guarded Earl Monroe, Jerry West, Flynn Robinson...
Then Oscar Robertson in later years.

On defense only: Frazier > Payton > Kidd > Stockton

Frazier could STEAL YOU BLIND. He had an unorthodox game, playing his man extremely loose, and then diving in for the steal with like a cobra. He had lightning hands: in his bio "Superguard", it is written he once had 15 steals vs the Hawks (unfortunately, steals were not an official stat back then). He was so good on help D that Red Holzman often played him against the WORSE opposing guard (e.g. on the Lakers, Walt often covered Garrett, not West) to utilise his help D best.

Also, Frazier was extremely cool, in stark contrast to guys like Payton. He was like Tim Duncan, believing a serene, polite expression irritates the opponent more then constantly talking trash. You could throw verbal abuse at Frazier, he never would reply save for yet another steal.

I admit I am a Frazier homer, but at least I am honest about it!

I never saw Frazier live but I heard he was like Deon Sanders. So good at stealing the ball that his opponent was thrown off his game. He was probably the best ever.

I did see Payton, Kidd, and Stockton. Stockton was a good defender but not really on these guy's level. He was dirty, knew how to get a steal, and tried hard but he wasn't a lockdown defender.

Kidd could cover anyone. Impossible to post up and big enough to step off and still effect the shot when playing smaller guys, he is also one of the best at bother big men but still recovering to his guy. I don't think he was as good as Payton though. GP was just nasty... he really was a glove and he knew how to use his offense to help his D, just abuse the other guy.
