Did Memphis make a mistake?

Post#1 » by Cevap » Tue Feb 26, 2008 4:49 am

By signing Darko over Varejao last summer? IIRC the Grizzlies were ready to sign Vareajo to a similar contract but instead gave it to Darko after his rights got renounced by Orlando.

Darko still has a lot of potential, he just gets a lot of heat for being the 2nd overall draft pick, it's not his fault.

Not All-Star potential, but he can be a very serviceable starter for years to come, he will be a late bloomer.

still strange to me how a great franchise like the Pistons could have picked up a scrub at #2 over other notable players..

not through the roof or anything, but i would think that given his age, and his skill set, he could be capable of putting up numbers somewhere around what dale (11 ppg, 10 rpg, 2.4 bpg) or bogut (13 ppg, 9 rpg, 1.7 bpg) is putting up this year.

something in that range i would think would be nice out of him. and he might even have a slight chance to produce at a slightly better clip. but i think similar productions to those above are much more reasonable aspirations.

I think if Darko had started his career somewhere outside of Detroit, he'd of definitely developed into a better player.

All Varejo does is flop, Darko is a much better post defender and overall post player.. they needed a center to help out Gasol and Anderson is clearly not a center.

yes and no. im pretty sure AV is capable of putting up double digits in scoring and rebounding. but he will never be the shot blocker that the others are (darko included). but he brings other things to the table that make up for that. if we are talking about centers here, i will usually take the shot blockers and legit 7 footers over most others (just a personal preference), but in general, i have AV right in this same tier.

and i disagree about darkos defense. hes not anything to write home about, but hes a big body whose not afraid to bang down low, and is capable at holding his own. hes also a decent shot blocker (1.8 bpg on 24 mpg), who might have room to improve in that regard. hes not all-nba team or anything, but hes not at "garbage" level either.

I would not second guess the Memphis front office because I think they have the greatest front office ever.

Darko only signed a 3 year deal anyway so if he sucks(which he does), he'll be gone in 2 years.

People haven't learned their lessons, you can't judge people who came into this league as teenagers and got no burn on their original teams. You need to wait until they have a year or two away from that team.

Look how long it took for J. O'neal. I mean look how long it took for Stevenson to finally become an impact player.

I see Darko as an extremely solid double double guy maxing out at 2.5 bpg maybe more. Idk what else you can ask for from a center. Verajao just got like 8 mil a year to flop and dunk the ball when he gets wide open looks from Lebron.

The funniest thing is that some of Lebron's teammates, like Boobie, Big Z, Gooden(now gone), Damon Jones, and others were severely underrated and told that they suck.

While Verajao and Pav were hailed as above average players when they actually suck.

lebron is definitely the next Jason Kidd in terms of him getting people contracts they do not deserve.

Final thoughts on Darko

He is 22 years old, lets hold off atleast a year until calling him a bust. I'm pretty sure he would put up better all-around numbers than Sideshow Bob if he was on Cleveland.

Neh man...anyone who thinks Darko can play knows nothing about basketball..

he just doesn't understand the game at all...

the story actually is that because he was so tall, coaches pushed him to become a basketball player..

he never loved the game or appreciated the game...

it's a fact little known...he is in the NBA to make money not to play basketball...

like it or not
