Sources: Magloire Close To Joining Mavs
February 26, 2008 - 9:02 am
ESPN -
Jamaal Magloire, who was waived by the Nets last week, is leaning towards joining the Mavericks, according to Marc Stein of ESPN.com.

NBA front-office sources told ESPN that Magloire is close to agreeing to terms with Dallas and that a decision could be made as early as Tuesday.

Magloire will officially clear waivers at 6 p.m. EST on Tuesday. [READ]

He will not be asked to do much. I do not think cassell or barry will come to dallas.

We're way more in a need for Magloire than for Barry or Cassell. It would be nice to get them but there is no urgency. Whereas we really need a decent backup to Damp.
Lets hope it gets done. He'd be a nice addition.

mags will be our best option to play backup center.. i hope he comes to dallas...

i still hope barry comes to dallas.. i feel barry would do a lot of things better than what cassell could do for the mavs...

Don't expect to receive the borderline all star Mags. That Mags is long gone. Right now, he's a decent backup. He will have trouble going up against the quicker, more athletic Centers and Power Forwards in the league. He's very slow. Can rebound the ball well and finish under the basket. Post game isn't as good as it once was. Compared to what's available, Mags is a good signing, especially with the lack of frontcourt depth on the Mavs.

At what cost? I hope we keep the MLE for the signing.

I think we should be able to split the MLE with him and barry

Why? It's not like it carries over to next season, might as well use it now if that's what it takes.

Not a big deal, you have Brandon Bass to cover those types.

Getting Magloire is a great move for the Mavs.

It's a potentially good move. Magloire is just an enigma though... His defense seemed solid from his brief stint with the Nets but for whatever reason he had serious trouble catching the ball and finishing on anything other than dunks.

Well that's why we need him. Defense not offense. I like the addition.

Some of you that are complaining...who were you expecting the Mavs sign? There's not much to choose from and Magloire is certainly better than just having Damp and Juwan ( ) at C.

I'll take Magloire gladly. We desperately need depth at C, another big body there who isn't a 60 yr old Kevin Willis.

Posted this in the 5 page Magloire thread, not sure anyone will read anymore in that thread:

Quote from Kidd in a Mark Stein article:

"I've never seen a guy work so hard when he isn't playing," Kidd said Monday night in Dallas of Magloire, who was Kidd's teammate with the Nets as recently as a week ago.
"If that were to happen [Dallas signing Magloire], I still think he has something left in the tank."

Quote from Allen:

"(Magliore) still has what it takes,'' Allen said. "He hasn't lost a thing. He fell out of favor in New Jersey, mostly because they like to have a high-post (big man) while Jamaal is a low-post offensive guy. But even when he quit getting minutes, he was still the hardest working guy on the team.''

Ya, I think we can do something with him. Damp with 32 mpg, Maggs with 16 mpg makes us a big team and makes smallball a thing of the past.

I love the signing... I am still holding out for the Mavs to sign Justin Williams and/or Barry and waive Juwan... But for the time being, I think this was a good signing seeing as how Magloire is as good of a backup center as there is. All we needed was a guy to replace Diop, its not like we were looking for the next great center.

Now everyone look at the "trade" now:

New Jersey sends:
Jamal Magloire
Malik Allen
Antoine Wright
Jason Kidd

Dallas sends:
Devin Harris
Desagana Diop
Keith Van Horn's contract (re-signed for the waived Nick Fazekas)
Trenton Hassell
Maurice Ager
2008 1st round pick
2010 1st round pick
$3 Million Dollars
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...

Everyone is talking like this is a done deal, but I still think A Perkins backup is also a strong possability. I'm hoping his experience with Kidd helps lure him here.

The Dallas Mavericks will sign center Jamaal Magloire after he clears waivers Tuesday night, according to NBA sources.

Magloire, 29, was waived by the New Jersey Nets last week. He played in 24 games with the Nets this season, averaging 1.8 points and 3.4 rebounds.

Magloire, 6-11, had his best NBA season in 2003-04, when he averaged 13.6 points and 10.4 rebounds with New Orleans. He has been with three other teams

I noticed the "hardest working guy on the team" comment from Kidd earlier today. I'd heard the term "lazy" and "unfocused" thrown around re: Magloire prior to that, so it's good to see an insider with a different (better) perspective.

Frankly, Magloire sounds a lot like Damp, and I just wonder if being challenged and playing on a winning team will bring the best out of him. I sure hope so. Offensively, he'll probably be a definite upgrade over Diop, though still sub-Diop defensively (I think I just coined a new phrase for our Cs).

Anyway, good signing given what's out there.

Totally agree. I have thought the two to be similar the last few years with Damp the ever so slight better defensive player and Magloire the ever so slight better offensive player. Both play similar enough to sub in and out without much effect personnel wise.

Good signing!

Just in the knick of time. I think houston will never become what they had the potential to be.

Now, go get this Justin Williams character to add to the Mbenga role and add 6 more fouls and supposedly a defensive presence

Return to Dallas Mavericks
