Offseason Moves: Rounding Out The Bench
It seems we finally have our starters, and now we can focus on rounding out our bench. I just wanted to present the direction I would like to see our team go in as it ties in a few themes I

Just wanted to clarify a couple of things I had left out before. I was talking about a sign and trade with Chill. Also I would love to present some specific numbers, but I don't know what the luxary tax will be set at next year, and I can only speculate at the contracts Smith and Chill will be offered from us and other teams.

first of all you know that no one would give up a first rounder for Zaza unless the Hawks are taking a bad contract in return. You can trade zaza for someone elses expiring that might need a change of scenery but he just isn't worth even close to a first rounder.
And you can't do a S&T with childress for an 08 first rounder. The draft comes before FA.

As I said before, we could still probably get a couple of 2nd rounders for Zaza, and we could package them for a late first rounder. Don't ever rule out the possiblity of getting a first rounder for Zaza either. There is no way Zaza would be on the All star ballot either, but he was. There is no way we could be Bibby for Shelden and fillers, but we did. Thanks for the heads up on Free Agency and the draft though. I had my timeline out of order.
It might actually be easier to do it in this order:
Trade Zaza for two 2nd rounders and fillers
Trade two 2nd rounders for a late first rounder.
Sign Diop.
Sign and Trade Chill . . . hopefully for someone on a rookie contract, and expiring fillers.

I think it was Chris Mannix, but I will have to try to dig up that issue and check again. I figured we would have to pay more though. Maybe we could get him for 10-12. I still think Zaza's stock is high enough to net us 2 2nd rounders and a dead weight expiring contract though, especially with Orlando and Houston's severe need. Although none of us are high on Zaza right now, as he gets more minutes, I'm sure his numbers will get back to what they were. So many people get emotional when a player isn't doing well though, and they trash him at every chance they get to post. Sure he's playing badly right now, but a lot of teams still think of him as a cheap 12 and 7 guy who can round out their line up at an affordable cost. The risk is small too he doesn't have much time left on his contract.

Rod- zaza is a dead weight expiring. Considering how badly he has played this season how much money do you think he woudl get as a FA this offseason? I seriously doubt anyone would give him 4 million. I don't know why you think he has significant value past that. Or why don't you tell us which team you think would give up 2 second rounders for him and post it on their board to see what they say- maybe I am wrong.

Most likely scenarios to pick up a draft pick this year is to buy one or trade a future pick to get one from someone night of the draft if they don't like their options when they pick. Even then it would probably occur after the pick was made if it is a 1st rounder (the team picks for us and then trades the player to avoid the rule about trading back to back picks). This kind of thing normally occurs later in the draft and requires the drafting team to be extremely cap conscious or for our staff to out scout their staff and see a bargain they don't (not likely).
Zaza trade value is as expiring deal, which means you can use him in a trade to team that has a player they are unhappy with who has a longer deal or as filler in a larger deal. If he is in a larger deal whomever he is packaged with with be the centerpiece for the other team, he would just be there to make contracts match up.

Better idea?
I hate giving up on Marvin, but he has the rest of the season and hopefully a bit of post-season to show me what he has. OR;
Marvin / Salim / Zaza / Speedy / 2009 second
for
Miller / Kwame / Crittenton
Sign & trade
Memphis gets Marvin / Salim and expirings
ATL gets another very good shooter and a back up BIG (if he signs at a reasonable rate).
We get a higher payroll signing both Josh's, but Kwame shouldn't cost too much or don't do the deal.
Bibby / Acie / Crit
Miller / Crit / Chil / West
JJ / Chil / Richardson
Smoove / Horford / Solo
Horford / Kwame / Solo
