His brother, Brent Barry, will become a free agent Tuesday, having been put on waivers by the SuperSonics after his trade to Seattle on Thursday. The Rockets, Suns, Mavericks, Spurs and Celtics are chasing Brent, working him like a 7-2 McDonald's All-American choosing between teams in the Final Four.

But along with the last-minute call that sent Jon Barry to Houston to do tonight's game for ESPN, Jon's phone has been ringing more than general managers' on the night before the trade deadline, with the Rockets especially reaching out to their former guard with all kinds of ties to the Rockets coaching staff.

"I'm going to become a player agent for all the calls I'm getting," Jon said. "Wherever he goes, I'm getting a cut. I was just on the phone with him. He's mulling his options. It's a hard decision to make. He knows how much Houston wants him. They've shown great interest, obviously. He is bouncing teams off me. He has a couple days. He's mulling it over."

The Celtics have let their interest in Brent Barry be known, but there is concern around the club that the soon-to-be free agent guard will choose to play for a contender closer to home in the West. According to league sources, the Celts are now a step behind Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas and Houston in the race for his services, but that could change.

He's a far more reliable three point shooter than Hayes. He'd be a solid pickup if he's healthy (which I'm not sure on. He hasn't played for a few months), but it looks like a longshot if he really wants to stay in the west.

Dumars wouldn't cut Hayes even if Barry called him up and said he'd sigh here if he did.
Rip Hamilton is a stain on the Pistons franchise.

I never said that he'd cut Hayes, and I don't think Barry is a possibility for the Pistons since teams like Houston are actively trying to pick him up, and he seems to want to stay in the west. All I said is that Barry is a more reliable shooter than Hayes. If healthy, I think that he'd be more stable than either Hayes or Dixon (Barry can play SG or SF), but all this is speculation at best, since he's pretty much not coming here.

Hell, I'd cut Hayes in a heart-beat to bring in Barry.
We could roll with a backcourt of Barry/Dixon/Afflalo (defensively Dixon/Afflalo/Barry, of course) at times. It'd be quite a luxury to have a 6'7" player that can shoot like a SG and has the basketball IQ/passing ability of a point guard.

Honestly. If I were the GM/if this were NBA2K8 I would cut Hunter and Hayes and sign Brent Barry, Jamaal Magloire, and Ruben Patterson (you heard me) and go all-out vet in the playoffs:
Billups/Stuckey/Dixon
Hamilton/Barry/Afflalo*
Prince/Patterson/Hermann
McDyess/Maxiell/Johnson*
Wallace/Magloire/Samb*
We'd win a title? On paper? Or just in NBA2K8?

Why isnt Patterson playing? He can really D up and plays super tough. He is an asset I would like for the playoffs; just in case lebron gets hot.

You know since it looks like the Pistons aren't in the mix for acquiring Barry and it seems as if he's going to the Suns or Spurs. This is the kind of thing that excites me I can totally see Dumars coming in under the radar and stealing Barry. I don't think it will happen but I believe it would make sense for Barry. If he wants a championship the Pistons in the Eastern Conference would be his best odds.

it appears Brent Barry is going to stay in the Western Conference. Barry, who was traded by San Antonio to Seattle last week and subsequently released, clears waivers today, and it is believed he has decided on going to the Phoenix Suns. Other possibilities include the surging Houston Rockets and his old team, the Spurs. If he returns to the Spurs, he cannot play for another three weeks under league rules.

Free agent guard Brent Barry told FOX 26 Sports he plans to make a decision on his future later Wednesday but that decision no longer includes the Houston Rockets. "To put it in basketball terms, the Rockets put on a full court press. But, when it was announced Yao Ming had the injury that made things pretty tough," Barry said. "It didn't cinch the decision because the Rockets have a lot to offer. Yao's injury is a big blow to the team, the city, and the rest of the league for that matter."

Barry said he spoke several times with Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey and Head Coach Rick Adelman and that the Rockets did everything possible and a little bit more. "They sent me a box of goodies that included video messages from several of their players and from (former Astros stars) Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio telling me great things about the city and the team," Barry said. "I jokingly said that if Bagwell and Biggio sent me an autographed bat that would cinch the deal."

A 13-year veteran, Barry played with the Spurs the last four years helping them to two NBA Championships. He was averaging 7.3 points and 1.8 assists a game prior to the trade. He has also played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, and the Seattle SuperSonics for five years from 2000-2005."Brent was very complimentary," said Daryl Morey, Rockets General Manager. "He didn't get into specifics but told us he was going in a different direction." The Spurs and the Phoenix Suns appear to be the favorites to sign Barry.

Guard Brent Barry, who was a key contributor on last season's championship team for the Spurs, is returning to San Antonio. The Spurs, who traded Barry to the Seattle SuperSonics last Thursday as part of their package for forward Kurt Thomas, are set to reacquire him after he was released by the Sonics and cleared waivers Tuesday, according to a newspaper report.

The Arizona Republic reported that Phoenix Suns general manager Steve Kerr said he was told by Barry on Thursday that the 13-year veteran has opted to return to San Antonio and not accept Phoenix's offer. "I spoke with Brent and he informed me he was going to stay in San Antonio," Kerr said. "He said that it was a tough decision but he's going to stay." Among the reported suitors for Barry were the Mavericks, Celtics and Suns, who were looking for a shooting guard to give them more options on the bench.

The paper reported that Barry will play for the veteran's minimum salary for the remainder of this season and next season with the Spurs, although league rules mandate that the Spurs must wait until March 21 to officially sign him. Barry was included along with center Francisco Elson and a 2009 first-round draft pick in the multiplayer trade that brought the 6-foot-9 Thomas to the Spurs. Thomas was brought in to give the defending NBA champions much-needed size to complement Tim Duncan. Barry, who originally signed as a free agent with San Antonio in July 2004, had averaged 7.3 points in 29 games for San Antonio this season. The 36-year-old guard has been sidelined the last several weeks by a calf injury.

News flash: Brent Barry will re-sign with San Antonio. Gee, who saw this coming?

Barry was traded to Seattle last week, waived, and then allegedly listened to offers from San Antonio, Phoenix, Boston, Houston and Dallas before re-signing with the Spurs. Skeptics, including me, have suggested that this was the plan all along and that the public courting of Barry was just a circus act -- one the Spurs will use as a defense if the NBA starts questioning whether there was a wink-wink deal between San Antonio and Seattle in place prior to the trade. Now if the league asks, the Spurs can say, "Hey, we were lucky to get him back. He almost went to Phoenix." If the NBA questions Barry, he can say, "Boy, it sure was a difficult decision, but this is best for my family and me."

If the Sonics are questioned about their role, they can say, "Hey, we wanted to make the trade but we didn't want a 36-year-old who has been bothered by injuries this season. So we cut him. What's the big deal?" I'm not totally convinced. At the same time, an NBA executive I respect a great deal told me he wasn't sure Barry and the Spurs had worked out a pre-trade deal that guaranteed his return to San Antonio. The executive told me it was "possible" this whole deal evolved on its own merit -- without the Spurs, Sonics or Barry circumventing any league rules or behaving unethically. Still, I remain skeptical, which I'm sure certainly bothers the Spurs, Sonics and Barry.

Not long after the Spurs' 97-94 victory over the Dallas Mavericks at AT&T Center, Brent Barry made it as official as he is allowed to by NBA rule: It is his intent to re-sign with the Spurs, just as soon as those rules allow.

"That is my intent, that's for sure," Barry said. "I hope things work out that way, and that's the way it stands now."

By NBA rule, though, a traded player cannot officially re-sign with the team that traded him for 30 days. In addition to the Spurs, Barry was pursued by four of the NBA's elite teams: the Boston Celtics, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns. One by one, he eliminated each suitor until the battle for his services came down to the Spurs and Suns. On Thursday he phoned Suns general manager Steve Kerr to let him know he was turning down their offer, believed to be for two years, starting at the veteran minimum salary of $1.215 million
