I don't know. Even if he doesn't have that much left in the tank, somehow it makes me feel better knowing that we have another true center on the roster again.

Is anyone else tired of hearing how many in the national media say the Mavs are no better with the Kidd trade because we got smaller in the big bad West?

So let's examine how we got smaller. We replaced Devin Harris with Jason Kidd. Sounds like we got bigger at PG right there. Then we lost Desagna Diop. I didn't realize it but apparently the national media believes that Diop is the equivalent of say Alonzo Mourning. At least that is the way he is described when talking about how the Mavs lost so much by losing Diop in the deal. They must not have watched Mavs games when having Diop on the floor was like playing 4 against 5 when the Mavs were on offense. Diop was a good defensive presense. He could rebound OK. But he was absolutely terrible offensively.

Now we have replaced Diop with Magloire. Not really much smaller there. Now Magloire will not be the defensive presence that Diop was but then again he will be far better offensively. It will no longer be like playing 4 against 5 on the offensive end of the court. In terms of rebounding Magloire is every bit as good as Diop in that area. So the question is will the difference at the defensive end be offset by the better offensive game.

I would have liked to see Diop play with Kidd. IF Kidd can inject Damp with some offensive improvement, then I would have loved to see Gana with him.

I'm not sure what to make of it because we did lose a mobile big defender with Diop, and replaced him with a clone of Damp. So now, we are stuck with going small to give a different look at the 5. That is not all bad, but we are going to miss Diop come playoff time against certain teams.

Losing Diop was my major criticism of the trade, and now getting Magloire lessens that issue. I think this is going to work out, maybe not quite championship caliber, but definitely improved.

Feel free to come back and stick your tongue out at us if he comes here and is a complete bust. That'll be just fine. Believe me, it won't take much at all for us to be pleased with him. Damn PJ Brown just signed for Boston. That sucks you guys couldn't get him instead, he's miles better than a washed up Mags.

Brown is not on the Mavs' radar despite their need for a big man, due to the fact that his agent is Mark Bartlestein, according to the Dallas Morning News. Mavs owner Mark Cuban, when asked about the possibility of Brown joining the Mavs, remarked "He's a Bartlestein guy, and all things being equal, we'd say no." (Feb 21)

If this is Cuban's reason for not signing PJ, he is not making good business decisions.

We still need another center imo, or someone who can guard centers because Damp has been a little gimpy this season and Mags could be a complete bust. I'd like to see a litte insurance at that spot. PJ is a proven player that could have made a difference in this tough Western conference.

Decisions based solely on emotion are normally loaded with risk.

I don't know how signing PJ Brown today would have made a difference. Had we signed PJ Brown back when the roster had the open slot then it makes sense. Brown is probably not in game shape and it is doubtful that he would get there watching Damp, Mags, and Bass.

Why would the Mavs want a guy who is old, on the way downhill side of his career, has Bartelstein for an agent, and hasnt played basketball in almost a year? Im sure Mags will be fine in the backup center role

Magloire hopes to seize his chance with the Dallas Mavericks

"There's no reason why I wasn't playing up there," he said Wednesday. "I'm still curious as to why."

That's similar to Bass, who languished on the New Orleans bench for two seasons before becoming a solid contributor this season for the Mavericks.

Magloire, 6-11 and 265 pounds, is in his eighth season, and the opportunity for playing time and an extended playoff run is what made the Mavericks appealing to him.

"I've admired the team and the organization," he said. "I had a chance to come here and jumped at the opportunity. I've worked tremendously hard, even not playing in New Jersey. I'd be the first one in and the last one to leave and I hope I'm able to show that out on the court.

"Everything pointed in the right direction. There were other teams, but I thought this was the best fit. What also made the decision easy is this is a team that does have an opportunity to win a title. And to be a part of that is special."

Coach Avery Johnson said he was unsure whether Magloire would be active for tonight's game.

"We're going to take it step by step," Johnson said. "He had a decent practice for a guy coming in for the first time. Whether we put him on the active list or give him some more time to get in better shape and to see how he fits in, we'll try to time it as best we can."

At the least, Magloire made an impact in his first practice.

"He's a big boy," Dirk Nowitzki said. "We all know the West has gotten a lot bigger and it's definitely a battle down there. I'm excited to have him on board. We should be ready to go to war."

Okay...Toronto and Orlando passed on Mags so there is a chance we may be vastly overrating him. He could be a bust but we don't know for sure one way or the other. Damp has been injured on and off this season so there is tremendous risk in putting the entire load on him.

If Damp goes down we may have to resort to Juwan as our center. Do you really think we have a prayer with that happening?
All we need is a big shot blocker as insurance. If Juwan, Dirk, and Bass end up playing the center position for extended minutes, we have no chance at a championship and we just traded away any future that we have for nothing.
Not having a 3rd center on this roster is flat out stupid considering the teams in the west.
