PJ Brown Signs: Updated Link Pg. 4
Sean Grande was on Sports Tonight the late edition last night and said the name that has quietly surfaced over the last 48-72 hours has been PJ Brown. He said they appear to be more concerned with the depth down low more than PG. I was surprised no one had posted this yet.

C's signing PJ Brown is about as significant as Detroit signing D Davis. Not a big deal, but nevertheless could be important in the playoffs to have that extra big vet in there to help set the defensive tone, step in in case of foul trouble, etc.
I'm up for some combination of big/small. Cassell and Brown would be great.
Apparently the Celtics are still trying to land Barry. If the snag with the Cassell (Sterling not wanting to buyout) holds, it could be Barry and Brown.
Danny is such a poker face. I would have caved already and grabbed someone last week. I hope all this stalemating brings us a prize!

pj brown has been a contributing basketball player the last few years, neither is what they used to be, but brown is significantly better than davis
youd think ANTONIO davis would still be playing, not dale
PJ key stats last season 6.1 PPG, 4.8 RPG, 0.7 BPG compared to career 9.2 PPG, 7.8 RPG, 1.0 BPG and for good measure .8 SPG
Dale key stats last season 0.8 PPG, 3 RPG, 0.7 BPG, compared to career 8 PPG, 7.9 RPG, 1.3 BPG
seems like PJ has aged better to me

True, I'd prefer Brown over Davis at this point, but the difference is not great. They're both in their late thirties, with playoff experience, able to give a decent 10 minutes a game or so.
The important point about both of them is that they are men, not early 20's guys who came out of school early. I'm not knocking the young guys; obviously some of them mature early-- like LeBron! Leon Powe is also someone who has matured quickly due to his circumstances.
But I think these older guys bring so much more, particularly in those playoff games where emotions run high and you have to be able to not only roll with the punches but with the refs whistle, too. Vets get the respect, and are used to all the mind games that go on.
Antonio Davis? Wow, another blast from the past. I remember seeing him in the SF summer league games before he was in the league. Yeah, you'd think he'd outlast Dale, but his game was more dependent on his hops, whereas Dale was a better position defender. And as the legs are usually the first to go...

Considering that PJ has rested all year he could be primed to have a substantial impact for the stretch run and the playoffs (as long as he's kept himself in shape during his time off). I still think he ends up signing somewhere like NO so that he can stay close to his hometown, but lets hope that Grande knows what he's talking about.

Age doesn't matter and that is what is available. I don't think Tim Duncan or Dwight Howard are going to be available. They want guys who can play at this level. PJ, while not what he used to be, can provide some backup minutes during the playoffs. I would think the last few years would tell us how much you can rely on young guys.

Or we could just stick with Davis and Powe?? Who both bring youth, energy and heart off the bench but would see their minutes cut because of a vet like Brown.
If we are going to sign a big man who hasnt played all year, why not the Bird man?
Cassell is the only older player I'd want to add because he brings experience and leadership to the PG position, two things this team lacks at that position, two things that are important at that position moreso than any other.

It's not as simple as an either or thing. It's insurance in case something happens to Perk, Pollard (not that it matters really), or god forbid KG. It's situational, for big men that Powe and Davis have trouble matching up against. I agree they can do it for short stretches, but not extended periods of time. It's going into the playoffs fully loaded.
Plus there's two roster spots open ... so why not both PJ and Cassell?

Getting a guy like PJ Brown could prove to be vital for this team. In the playoffs you need 8-9 rotation usually consisting of atleast a 3rd wing, 3rd big, and backup PG. As it stands the C's are set at that 3rd wing with Posey in there. Now I know many here believe that Posey can also be that 3rd big...I wouldn't really on such for the playoffs. Brown would solidfy 7/8ths of our playoff rotation. I think Sam would make it a clean 8 though.

Looks like this could be a done deal.

The Celtics appear to be close to adding free agent forward P.J. Brown to their roster.
Brown's agent, Mark Bartelstein, acknowledged it is "possible" that Brown could be a Celtic soon.
The 38-year-old Brown, who has been courted to return to his home state team, the New Orleans Hornets, has been inactive this season.
The Celtics have two roster spots to fill before Friday's playoff eligible deadline. The Celtics hope to land veteran guard Sam Cassell if he is bought out by the Clippers.
Brown, who has 14 years of experience, would bring needed depth in the frontline. The 6-foot-11 forward is known for his rebounding and tough interior defense. He averages 9.2 points and 7.8 rebounds per game for his career. He also would brings much-needed playoff experience, with 81 games under his belt with the four franchises he has played for, most recently as a member of the Chicago Bulls.
