I know this is picky, but I'm trying to do different calculations for a project, and I want to know if I'm right or not
With regard to Larry Bird Free Agents and their Free Agent Amounts, one factor it's based on is whether or not a player's previous salary was less than or greater than the Average Player Salary.
My question is: which average player salary is it based on? So if it's July 2008, and we're trying to figure out Josh Smith's Free Agent Amount, are we comparing Josh Smith's 2007-2008 salary to the 2007-2008 Average Player Salary (which would be established by then) or the 2006-2007 Average Player Salary?
The CBA refers to our method of comparison as the "Estimated Average Player Salary," which is 108% of the previous year's Average Player Salary.
So are we looking at 108% of the 2007-2008 Average Player Salary or 108% of the 2006-2007 Average Player Salary. My interpretation leads me to guess 2006-2007, but I'm not sure.

It obviously only matters after the July Moratorium, by which time the audit is complete and the average salary is defined (so the estimated average isn't needed for this purpose). The average is based on the standard formula, which I talk about in FAQ question 24:
LINK
A quick rule of thumb is that it's the same as the MLE.

thanks, but which MLE? The 2007-2008 one or the 2006-2007 one? Because the 2008-2009 Average Player Salary won't be determined until July 2009, right? I agree that the Estimated Average Player Salary shouldn't play a role, but here's what the CBA says:
(i) A Qualifying Veteran Free Agent, other than a Qualifying Veteran Free Agent described in Section 4(a)(1)(ii) or (iii) below, will be included at 150% of his prior Salary if it was equal to or greater than the Estimated Average Player Salary, and 200% of his prior Salary if it was less than the Estimated Average Player Salary.
So i'm just wondering which year, it refers to

Josh Smith is not a good example, his salary is only $2,243,543. No matter which year is used he is well below the average of $5M+, so his cap hold this summer would be 300% of $2,243,543. A better example would be Emeka Okafor, his current salary is $5,427,307, which is only about $70K more the 07-08 MLE. If the MLE goes up more than $70K, then his cap hold would change from 250% to 300%. In the end it doesn't make a whole lot of difference because the Bocats are almost certain to be over the cap this summer, but I certainly appreciate the effort to be as accurate as possible.
I am going to flag all the players that this could potentially impact on my spreadsheet and once I finish I will list them on this thread.

^ yeah i know he's not a good example - i wouldn't be shocked if not one player had this issue or only a couple were close to it, but I'm more asking about the rule itself.
The question is whether or not it's based off of the 2007-2008 MLE amount (which is equal to 108% of the 2006-2007 Average Player Salary) or the 2008-2009 MLE (which is equal to 108% of the 2007-2008 Average Player Salary)
I think it's based off of the 2006-2007 one...otherwise what's the point of using "Estimated Average Player Salary" -- because if they could say 108% of the prior year's APS, they would just say that.... but Estimated APS of the prior year would equal 108% of the 2006-2007 APS

I was leaning toward thinking that the most current numbers would be used (08-09 MLE, since it will be calculated prior to free agency opening), as Larry eluded to. But what you bring up about the wording is definetly a valid point.
I do think that this will only affect a couple of players, and then it really only matters if their team could potentially be under the cap. In the end it's not a big deal, but if were not trying to be as accurate as possible, then what's the point? (I have to be careful with that question, it could open a pandora's box)
