They tried. Actually it was the Chinese Basketball Association. They asked for 50%, but it never happened. Yao paid about 6, 7million to his old Shanghai team (kinda like a buy-out) and that is it.

that's strange. I am from China. When I was a student in UCSD, I had to pay TAX though my monthly income was only $1000. The tax treaty only gives you first $5000 tax free for J and F visa.
I paid more money to US goverment than the total of my bank savings plus what I ever give to my parents and my son...
